I think I’m developing superpowers

My static shocks are escalating beyond normal levels. Sometimes I go to touch something and I shock myself 4 times in a row. I shocked myself on a granite kitchen counter top. I shock people when I touch them. Often the static shocks are producing visible sparks.

should I use my powers for good or evil? What should my name be?

and of course it’s not just that it’s very dry in my house and my slippers are generating static electricity when I walk across the floor. THAT would be a ridiculously simple explanation that is no fun at all.

Asking for a friend - why does no one spontaneously combust anymore? I think of this often and blame a weird fact book I had as a child but I'm a 'shocker' so wonder if someone will find a pile of dust at some point, that used to be me.

Ugh. That is one of the things I don't miss about being in the UK.

If we had the radiators on at home, I would shock everything and everyone. My poor cats got the brunt of it.

Something about having the radiators on made it go out of control lol.

I reckon I could have killed a fly with my fingertip if I'd caught one.... Maybe a very niche superpower lol

Don't they have radiators anywhere else in the world then?

OP - if you come across a cat, please don't touch it. For the benefit of all concerned. 😂

My dh went to stroke our cat just after getting out of the car and saw the spark leave his fingers and get our cat right on his nose! Poor boy, he was not impressed. I don't know what it was about that car, but I had to make sure I closed the door by pushing on the glass as if I touched the door I'd get a huge shock. Think about it now, I wonder if it was the seats as the covers were manmade fibres?

redsky21 · 16/02/2025 13:28

I was like this for a while until I realised it was because I'd stopped using fabric conditioner 😂

JMSA · 16/02/2025 13:28

My superpower is having the ability and will not to murder my ex-husband.

Sorry, a slightly dark one there Grin

I am fat, grey haired, and over 50. I am invisible.

Absolutely. I'm 67 and share this power. I sometimes think I'd make a world-class shoplifter, if I had the courage.

bringthecactusin · 16/02/2025 14:31

Your superhero name?

Mother Earthed. 🤣🤣

DP had this when she was pregnant. Kept giving the cat electric shocks. Stopped happening when she gave birth but it was a good few months before the cat trusted her again!

I grew up in NZ and we had a fireplace and then later most people switched to heat pumps. They didn't have any in Aus either when I lived there for a few years.

I had never seen a radiator before moving to the UK and I've never seen them anywhere else in all my travels. So they might have them in other countries, but none that I have lived in :)

I now live in Thailand though, so definitely no need lol

Spontaneous human combustion is one of those things that sounds dramatic, but there’s no actual scientific evidence for it. Most cases where it’s been reported can usually be explained by something external, like a dropped cigarette or candle.

There’s also something called the wick effect, where clothes soak up body fat and burn slowly like a candle wick (grim, I know). Things like alcohol, medical conditions, or just bad luck with an ignition source tend to be the real cause.

So nope, you’re not going to suddenly catch fire out of nowhere! :D

There are a lot of electrical wires sitting nicely sandwiched in a car door cavity as I discovered when I watched the glass repair man replace my broken car window.
Bet you had a loose/disconnected wire?

Sheepsheeps · 16/02/2025 15:36

Hi have ENDLESS superpowers in our house to name but a few
Toilet roll changer
Food in fridge rearranger
Finder of everything
I too have zappy fingers!!!

This is me, and I have several cats, the poor sods 😂

swashbucklecheer · 16/02/2025 15:52

My superpower is turning invisible judging by the amount of dick heads who pull out in front of me when driving!

CookieCrumbles23 · 16/02/2025 15:58

My kiss has the ability to heal scraped knees, grazed elbows, stubbed toes and bumped heads. This magic only works on my children but it’s truly impressive!

My husband also has the power to read minds, although he denies it and often says ‘You have to tell me what you want, I can’t read your mind!” 🙄

Welcome to the superhero squad, OP. You should call yourself ‘Shock-a-doodle-do’. Slightly out of the ordinary for a superhero name, but memorable.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 16/02/2025 19:45

This is so mad. I touched my daughter recently and I could actually feel her vibration. It’s was so nuts. I didn’t last very long and I was really quite shocked as I operate on a strange vibrational level anyway. But this was a first even for me! My superpower is energetic entanglements 😂 I wouldn’t know how to use it for good or evil as a I have no control over it … but I do know when it’s afoot.

This! My cat is currently avoiding me like the plague.

@YouDeserveBetterSoAskForIt phew! I'll sleep tonightWink

Phineyj · 16/02/2025 22:06

My superpower is I can tell when teenagers are texting under the desk from a considerable distance. They find this surprising.

I'm thinking of getting the mug that says I Can Tell When You're Texting.

All hail Electra! If you ever visit London (or live here), do stay away from the Barbican or you may have a shocking evening...
