Is your job is just a necessary evil to fund your life, or are you truly passionate about what you do? In other words, are you grinding away just for the paycheck, or are you the type of person who wakes up every day thinking, "I can’t wait to tackle that spreadsheet!"?

Do you live to work or work to live, in other words?

I enjoy my job, but I wouldn't do it if I didn't need the money

PersephonesPomegranate · 11/02/2025 16:30

I'm 37 and daydream at least weekly about 1) retiring or 2) winning the lottery and sending that "Bye, I don't need your job anymore" email, if that answers your question😆

Pomegranatemum · 11/02/2025 16:32

Definitely for the money! Totally wouldn’t be worth the stress and everything else otherwise.

JudgeBread · 11/02/2025 16:32

Because I have to. I actually really like my job (after years of working jobs I hated) but if I had the option to not work I'd pack it in immediately with zero regrets. The happiest and most at peace I've ever been as an adult was when I was furloughed on 80% pay for almost a year during Covid 🤷‍♀️ if I could be a professional lady of leisure I absolutely would.

MyUmberSeal · 11/02/2025 16:33

If I won the euro millions, my work wouldn’t see me again for dust, I wouldn’t even do them the the curtesy of handing my notice in, they just wouldn’t see me again. I definitely only work for the money.

Hello comrade, i didn't realise you were also here lmfao this is my sister and i. We only work because we have to

Absolutely this. For this reason alone, Covid was the most chilled gorgeous time in my life. Loved every second of furlough.

Sunseaandgreys · 11/02/2025 16:38

Interesting! I absolutely love my job and what and where I get to so do/go with it, so even if I were to win some sort euromillions I’d continue exactly as I am. But I appreciate that’s not usually the norm!

Hollowvoice · 11/02/2025 16:40

I don't have to work, we'd be fine on DHs salary alone, albeit with some belt tightening.
We've been thinking about this a lot lately - DCs SEN needs have been increasing and we're wondering about home education, which would likely mean me giving up work. I don't think I want to do that, as hard as it is to do my job some days I do mostly enjoy it, it helps me feel useful and I don't think it would be good for my mental health to stop entirely. But the current juggling is so very hard.

I don't believe anyone wakes up thinking: 'I can't wait to tackle that spread sheet!'

I genuinely love my job. Some days it feels like more of a hobby than a job to the point where, if I won the lottery tomorrow, I'm not convinced I'd give it up!

It's very much part of who I 'am' and I'd hate to lose this.

As they say: 'Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life!'

Catza · 11/02/2025 16:43

I have two jobs and I love them both. Although, like everyone else I have days when I just want to go on a long walk instead. One of my jobs I probably won't do for free, the other one - absolutely would. All day every day!

Spanielsaremad · 11/02/2025 16:46

I absolutely love working and love my job. I'd do it even if I won the lottery. I have a professional career rather than a job though.

FashionCrazy · 11/02/2025 16:47

SAHM and I have nothing to get out of bed for. The less you do, the less you want to do.

Been trying to get a job but after 10yrs not working, I'm finding it difficult.

I loved being a SAHM when my kids were younger but for my mental health I should have kept working part time.

eosmum · 11/02/2025 16:48

Have to😭:( Worked with someone who had a huge win, millions, who stayed working until retirement, and moaned every day about work.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 11/02/2025 16:49

Both.

I love my job and I need the money as well.

Pickingmyselfup · 11/02/2025 16:50

I work because I have to in order to fund our lifestyle. I work as little hours as I can get away with at the minute.

If I won the lottery tomorrow I might still do the odd day here and there for the social aspect. It's the kind of place where you can do one shift a month or none for a year.

I don't know if I would have the time though, I would fill my days with running, yoga, gym and I would probably get a dog so I would be out walking it.

Itsforthebest · 11/02/2025 16:50

I wouldn't give it up completely but I'd like to cut back. Working 2 days a week for a full paycheque would be my ideal.

bournevilleismyfavourite · 11/02/2025 16:50

I work but don’t need to financially. I do like my job/my colleagues/pupils (I’m a teacher)/my subject.

notquiteruralbliss · 11/02/2025 16:50

I work because I want to. I'm in my 60s and still hoping to continue for a few years yet despite working in a notoriously fast paced industry. Each time I finish a contract I wonder whether it is time to stop but, as soon as I'm approached about an interesting and full on role, I bite the agent's arm off. DH is 10 years older than me, still works almost full time and would probably do so if they didn't pay him.

spuddy4 · 11/02/2025 16:51

I'd probably drop to part time if I could because I'd miss everyone I worked with. I hate it when I have to get up super early but I think I'd go crazy without social interaction because everyone else would be in work during the week so I'd be bored.

Badgerandfox227 · 11/02/2025 16:54

Because I have to. After being career focussed in my twenties and early thirties, I’m now in my early forties and wishing I could get a lower seniority role or stopping work entirely. But I’m the breadwinner so that’s not going to happen anytime soon.

ItGhoul · 11/02/2025 16:56

My job's nice enough, but I wouldn't work if I didn't have to, not in a million years. There are so many more enjoyable things I could do with my time. I don't get bored at all when left to my own devices; I can always find a billion ways to occupy my mind on far more interesting topics than work. I really don't understand what people mean when they say they'd be bored if they didn't work (I mean, I understand in theory but I can't actually imagine how that would feel.

PrimitivePerson · 11/02/2025 16:57

I work because I have to. If I was well off enough to afford even a fairly frugal life without work, I'd give it up immediately. I have loads of interests and hobbies I could fill my time with.

jellybe · 11/02/2025 17:00

Mainly for the money but if I didn't have to work I would still do one shift a week as I wouldn't want to loss my PIN or my skills (I worked bloody hard for them)

I wish people would stop being crass enough to say this stuff. Lockdowns were absolute hell for me.
