To think billionaires shouldn’t exist?

No one earns a billion through hard work alone - it’s exploitation. AIBU to think billionaires shouldn’t exist in a fair society?

The current government have made it quite plain that if you prospered at all, then they are coming for you financially. My reply is that I will look for every available opt out.

This is not about the Labour Government.
This is about the global economy and the ridiculous way wealth is distributed.

This is the problem. We need to think way bigger than just our own back yard here.

caringcarer · 11/02/2025 22:45

I don't begrudge billionaires their billions. I'm quite happy with what I've got. Being envious of others is tiresome. If you want to live a communist life go to live in a communist country.

Jossjt · 11/02/2025 23:48

BaMamma · 11/02/2025 21:05

Not advocating communism, just less disgusting income disparity between the top and the bottom.

But you haven’t explained how having fewer billionaires helps those at the bottom.

Or do you want equality so that everyone is equally poor. Why do you care that a billionaire has a private jet. That private jet o existing won’t make poor people less poor.

This kind of envy is stupid and totally irrational. Rather than lifting those at the bottom, your kid of politics is basically about pulling people down, because ‘yeah equality’.

You're right that people struggle with how much £1 Bn is.

Think about it as time. £1 gets you 1 second back in time.

1 million seconds is about 11 days. So for £1 m you could go back to a week last Friday.

1 billion seconds is 37 YEARS

So £1 bn takes you back all the way to 1988.

The richest man on the Uk, has £18 bn to his name in seconds that's 666 years.

His fortune takes him back to the Middle Ages. 1359

Musk? He's 'worth' 14,687 years. So his money converted to seconds would take him back to the ice age.

I think that's why people think addressing the increase in number and wealth of billionaires is the same as going after people who want to do well for their families.

But it really isn't. £1bn is a different league.

So what?

I'd rather some people had millions and most had thousands than a handful have billions and everyone else has hundreds. Get it?

Loving how a load of replies are basically it's either billionaires or communism.

I don't think anyone really needs more than about 900 million in personal wealth. I'd go even further and express a shockingly red flag belief that I could get by on 500 million at a push. Accumulating wealth and stuff is fine up to a point, hoarding the GDP of a medium sized nation not so much.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 12/02/2025 01:34

I always use this example @ThinkAboutItTomorrow , it helps to contextualise that you can't just work really hard to reach this level of wealth -you would need to be earning £2000 ph from when Jesus was a bab.

Cupcakes2035 · 12/02/2025 01:52

the whole system needs a refocusing and better society for all

Presumably you think that some people not having billions means other people will automatically get that money. I don’t think you understand how finance and money flows work.

Do you see any correlation between wages and CEO salaries?

In the private sector wages of non CEO employees are set by labour supply and government intervention and remuneration of CEOs are set by shareholder bodies.

Whats your point?

timetodecide2345 · 12/02/2025 06:43

Extremes of wealth are bad for any society . With this level of wealth should come a social responsibility. If they don't have that then they are non productive. Ants would probably eject them from a nest!

This kind of comment is so basic and childlike.
Can you get your head around the fact that it's NOT about envy? We are talking about the fair redistribution of immense, unnecessary wealth.

I don't want the billionaires' money for myself but it is frankly obscene that we have created a situation where 26 people have amassed more wealth than nearly half of the entire world. While others simply starve.

How does that work then? Encourage kids to work hard, reach for the stars! But don't succeed to much, you will have to give it back!! Ridiculous thread.

category12 · 12/02/2025 07:07

I just don't know how someone can have that much money, and not want to use it to make the world better.

Starving children, disasters, disease, environmental destruction?

Nope, just let the money roll in.

It's disgusting.
Being that rich is disgusting.

So if kids were told they can't amass £185 billion, only perhaps £2 billion, they would stop trying to achieve would they?

"Yeah, I can only earn up to two billion (more money than I can ever actually spend in my lifetime) so it's not worth it"
It's ludicrous the way people excuse obscene wealth.

Orangesinthebag · 12/02/2025 07:17

Obviously I think no billionaires should exist but if wealth were capped at 2 billion, imagine the difference it could make.
It was referenced before but read up on Limitarianism.

Why would anyone keep working past your limit? They’d just stop

Why do you think people should just fund others?

Fine by me.

Sell off your businesses and live on your 2 billion.

I wouldn’t need to, as this stupid idea doesn’t exist in law. Happy days!

Point is, we don't need billionaires "to keep working" to amass more wealth for themselves. They tend to build monopolies and buy out or drive out smaller businesses, them stopping hogging everything would be beneficial.

Your ideas are ludicrous IMO , I promote hard work and success - which should be rewarded, not penalised. Stop being bitter.
