Repeated threads by different posters

Ok am I going crazy or are there so many threads lately that seem the same but the OP's claim they've never posted about it before? I read a thread the other day that was pretty much identical to one I'd read earlier in the day (think it was about DC throwing up clear mucus) but the OP said they'd never posted about it before. And since then I swear I've read multiple threads which are pretty much identical or just a couple of minor details changed.

And then there's the posts that just seem so ridiculous that they can't be true.

It's got me doubting how many posts these days are actually genuine and how many are... I dunno. AI? Trolls? Bots?

Please tell me it's not just me that's noticed this and I'm not going mad!

I am being unreasonable - people have similar problems and worry about ridiculous things

I am NOT being unreasonable - you've also noticed this and are wondering how many people on here are actually genuine

Trolls I think. I can tell the AI/bots now I think. But there seem to be people who love stirring up resentment on here. I think I can tell the writing style of one now, who always seems to post argumentative things (which then get removed) - but her usernames are always different.

liveandlearn73628 · 09/02/2025 20:15

Or his

MumChp · 09/02/2025 20:16

AI...

jotex · 09/02/2025 20:17

I read so many threads on here (AIBU) and my first thought is “AI” and I would wager that I’m correct about 70% of the time.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 09/02/2025 20:58

Yanbu I keep on seeing this

I don't really know what trolls and bots get from mumsnet tbh

It's not like we're paid to post or anything

Weird

Drearycommuter · 09/02/2025 21:00

how can you spot AI or a troll?

tbh I assume one thread reminds someone of their situation. But I am gullible!

AI...

Yup, hard agree.

i assumed it was because it creates more clicks / posts / likes etc. which mumsnet could use to get more money for advertising

NoraLuka · 09/02/2025 21:03

I’ve noticed this for ages, there are clusters (hate that word!) of similar threads. Maybe people read a thread that’s similar to their own situation and it encourages them to post? Or AI.

Suzuki76 · 09/02/2025 21:03

I can spot trolls but not AI - genuinely not sure which of the regular topics are AIed. Political ones maybe?

u3ername · 09/02/2025 21:05

There're a lot of genuine posts under Parenting. Most of them remain with no responses though.

Saphire123 · 09/02/2025 23:37

It gets tedious reading similar long drawn out posts, often using the same terminology.
I tend to stop responding if the OP just makes one post then doesn't respond to any of the replies.
At best they are just ignorant, at worse, it's a troll or AI.

BallerinaRadio · 10/02/2025 08:54

See the tutor post near the top of the page. Definitely the 3rd or 4th version of this story, I feel like Mumsnet will have to start looking at ways to weed these out

OP posts:
Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 10/02/2025 08:56

Have you posted this before op? I’m sure I’ve seen it almost word for word recently!

😉

IcyColdDay · 10/02/2025 08:57

Whaat? How and WHY are there AI bot threads on MN?

AllHisCaterpillarFriends · 10/02/2025 08:59

I just clicked on that an I agree. Several recently changing who cancelled, tutor, childminder, nursery, club etc but same outcome.

I will get deleted for this but it's true.

TheyAreNotAngelsTheyDontCareAtAll · 10/02/2025 09:00

I've noticed far more posts with 'gonna' 'cuz', and various similar spellings of such words. Not sure if it's an AI bot trying to be trendy, kids, or an appalling drop in spelling ability!
But yes, some far more arugumentative and goady posts from OPs, with their subsequent posts attempting to annoy the f* out of everyone!

NoraLuka · 10/02/2025 09:05

I just posted on that tutor thread, didn’t realise it was a duplicate! I don’t get the point of AI threads, is it to train the AI? Because if it’s to drive traffic to the site surely it will be counterproductive once people realise?

OneLilacGuide · 10/02/2025 09:07

I thought the same about the tutor one! I think it’s trolls on the wind up, but could be AI.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/02/2025 09:12

There's been a flurry of "sports scholarship" at boarding school/ international university in the last month or so which is quite a niche circumstance.

That's a funny response... but it is actually true as well!

Maybe some bots are picking up on repeated spamming by other bots and are then spamming us all to repeatedly complain about it Grin

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 10/02/2025 09:20

Maybe I shouldn't give them ideas, but we haven't actually had a 'Why are there men/women who aren't mums/Americans on MN?' thread for quite a while now.

Sadcafe · 10/02/2025 09:27

There are certainly a number of very similar threads, are they fake or are they , as someone else commented, the result of someone thinking that’s very similar to my situation so I will post about it. I’ve read a lot of threads that make me realise that things that have/ are happening are similar, generally I’d just comment on the thread to that effect though and not post a new one. For some people it may be cathartic to post a new but similar thread

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/02/2025 09:35

I wish whoever trains these bots would teach them that the opening post does not need to be a 1000 word essay. The place is plagued with long, very long, extremely long and ridiculously long OPs at the moment.

Yes. I know which poster you're referring to and they can be spotted a mile off. They're a previously banned poster so if you report their posts, Mumsnet will remove them and delete their account. Unfortunately they then open a new one, and so the cycle continues.
