Ainu to think Angela Rayners has been set up to fail on her 1.5m homes target ?
you can barely get planning permission through for a small extension in under 10 weeks let alone 1.5 m new homes
Every month that goes by the shortage compounds
I wonder if Kier has set her up to fail

Introduction of Awaab’s Law protecting residents from hazardous mould, damp, etc.

This one will be interesting as social housing is the worst. Time to get their own house in order just as private landlords have to

Absolutely, I totally agree. It’s hard to believe that a law like this doesn’t already exist, or wasn’t introduced following Awaab Ishak’s death in 2020.

TheNuthatch · 11/02/2025 16:52

It will be interesting to see how much of the new housing will be built in the traditional Tory constituencies. Particularly the ones that turned red at the election with slim majorities.

nearlylovemyusername · 11/02/2025 18:00

Another interesting development (sorry, nothing to do with housing or accounts, but current government, it seems to be the only political thread running now)

US and UK refuse to sign summit declaration on AI

Signed by countries including China, India and Germany, the summit declaration calls for “ensuring AI is open, inclusive, transparent, ethical, safe, secure and trustworthy, taking into account international frameworks for all”.

UK didn't sign it, the same as US. China did. Mr Starmer is happy to give tons of money to Red Ed on climate change but wouldn't sign a doc trying to give just a tiny bit safety to something which is most likely to transform the world and our lives in the most profound way.

TheNuthatch · 11/02/2025 18:15

@nearlylovemyusername

So Starmer has bent the knee to Musk/Trump? Or is there more to it that I can't see?

yellowspanner · 11/02/2025 18:21

Is Angela from housing any worse than what she said "Tory scum" or is it not ok just because she's Labour.
I think Angie from housing is better though

JoyousGreyOrca · 11/02/2025 18:41

@yellowspanner so you are comfortable with misogyny and classism?

Parsley1234 · 11/02/2025 18:50

Bent the knee is a very civilised way of summarising this 😉

Yes! Can you imagine what they could do with this government!

2 sacked labour MPs and 11 suspended councillors are certainly OK with it!

I keep thinking we need a general running thread to moan about the government and the economy.

Parsley1234 · 11/02/2025 22:11

@TheNuthatch yes a great idea it wd move on so fast it wd be lightening. Nothing to do with Rayner or housing let’s have a conversation about WEF Davos and is Starmer in thrall to them at the expense of the UK ?

The targets are certainly higher in Tory areas. Whether these will be met is another matter.

Ooh love a bit of Davos!
Sounds like you've already got a good thread title there!

EasternStandard · 12/02/2025 09:17

I feel like Labour are doing that SM campaign linked below on pushing deportation headlines. It's not really working mind you

Interesting to see them panic on Reform's polling

Wonder what they'll do in summer as numbers go up

Parsley1234 · 12/02/2025 09:23

@TheNuthatch I don’t understand it 🤣it might be a good Title I might get to understand more x

The issue is the housing won’t be affordable for those who earn around minimum wage.
Affordable housing hasn’t been affordable for many years.

Affordable is 10% below market value. We need social housing not £250k houses for sale at £225k.

Probably choosing the battles they’re inevitably going to have with the Trump regime. I think Starmer is ignoring all the furore and outrage Trump is deliberately causing and will take a more thoughtful pragmatic view of how to handle it

Wow, only 10% 😳
We absolutely do require more social housing but many workers are not entitled to it and are told to rent privately.
How on earth will they be able to afford an ‘affordable’ house when rents are at ridiculously high levels.
