  • Was it fun?
  • Did you enjoy it?
  • What should I do do get ready?
  • Did it hurt?
  • Would you do it again?
  • Were you solo? with a partner? or a group?
  • Any things that surprised you about it?

A close friend of mine had arrangments, now her DH can't make it due to some work issues. So 7 days from now I'll be with her ...and it will be my first time to SKI.

I'm fit, go running 2x times a week, used to play a lot of sports, just never had the opportunity to try ski. So I expect fitness should be OK?

My friend has only skied twice before, so she classifies herself a biginners. Resort looks really nice, with some beginner areas.

Any advice appreciated!

Probably one of the cringiest posts I've ever seen on here. Good going OP.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 08/02/2025 09:11

🙄

franrix · 08/02/2025 09:11

wtf?

Mulledjuice · 08/02/2025 09:13

Pretty cringe! There are loads of posts of advice for first-time or beginner skivers on here - try a search. The advice doesn't age quickly.

Bristolinfeb · 08/02/2025 09:13

Awful post

FrannyScraps · 08/02/2025 09:14

Oooh look at you trying to be cool and make a 'fun' thread. Tee hee. You really had us fooled that it was a naughty thread! Oh my!

EveryOtherNameTaken · 08/02/2025 09:15

Am I missing a double entendre or something?

JJZ · 08/02/2025 09:16

Yes this really wasn’t necessary. Skiing is never going to be amusing topic to talk about and there is probably somewhere better to ask than AIBU.

Wow this is embarrassing, you should be embarrassed

Ace56 · 08/02/2025 09:16

If you ACTUALLY want advice about skiing, I’d make another appropriately titled thread.
But I don’t think you do!

TriathlonTriathlonTriathlon · 08/02/2025 09:16

Get very good quality expensive mittens, don’t bother with cheap gloves. Hands being cold will make you miserable.

Wear a helmet.

Don't go anywhere near moguls.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 08/02/2025 09:17
  • Was it fun? No
  • Did you enjoy it? No
  • What should I do do get ready? Lunges and squats
  • Did it hurt? Yes
  • Would you do it again? No
  • Were you solo? with a partner? or a group? Group
  • Any things that surprised you about it? How hot I got despite the cold weather…. I was sweating away in my salopettes.
I never want to do it again. DH however loves snowboarding and goes on a group ski/snowboard holiday every year. If I join them one day, I’ll be there just to enjoy the scenery and drink holy chocolate.
myhotwaterbottle · 08/02/2025 09:18

Have fun OP. I've never been skiing. It doesn't appeal to me. But it's clear you're super excited.

Maybe see if there's a Reddit forum for skiing. Mumsnet is full of miserable, jaded bitches.

JJZ · 08/02/2025 09:18

If you look at the similar threads bit at the bottom OP there’s quite a few threads asking for advice for first time skiers.

NOTANUM · 08/02/2025 09:19

Book a class with adults all week and encourage your friend to do the same. There is a big difference between someone who has been twice and one who has never been at all so at best you’ll ski for an hour together after lunch. It’s also the most fun.
Prepare to stretch a lot before and after skiing.
Bring thermals etc. but not too much. You don’t sweat anywhere as much as you’d think when just starting out. Ignore hand warmers etc. - rarely needed.
Don’t drink and ski as it gets ugly fast!
Enjoy!!

Eye rolling aside (I was about to say "you're allowed to say sex on MN you know"), top tips:

  1. get lessons. Just hoping your friends will give you pointers and you'll pick it up never ends well. You need proper lessons. And it's half term so they will book up in advance.
  2. get enough warm kit. You need to buy ski jacket, trousers, gloves and goggles, though some of these can be got second hand/from cheaper stores like Decathlon. Other things like thermals you may already have or be able to improvise. I like to wear a fleecy neck warmer especially on cold lifts, but that will depend on the weather. You can usually hire a helmet with your skis and boots, no need to buy.
  3. Ski boots are hideous inventions designed to make you want to chop off your own feet. You do get used to them a bit, but make sure they fit well before you leave the shop.
  4. Being fit is very helpful but expect you will still have aches and pains at the end of the day, as you are using muscles in ways they may not be used to!

I love being in the mountains and the snow. I'm a very fair weather skier and my DS had a nasty accident last year so we won't be going again for a while.

Good luck!

Or she could just do a search on here for the many threads about being a novice skier?

MiddleClassProblem · 08/02/2025 09:21

Chair hold against the wall for a minute at a itime I think we did. I was 9 and went with school and we all had to do this as part of a fitness session…

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 08/02/2025 09:21

Oh yes, definitely book lessons!
I recommend lessons in the morning then break for lunch, then venture out to practice in the afternoons.

which resort are you going to?

sometimesmovingforwards · 08/02/2025 09:22

Keep your knees together

😂

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/02/2025 09:23

Lol, can’t help you with SKIing I’m afraid. Been to resorts and sat with a glass of wine watching others, that’s my limit and that I can recommend!

myhotwaterbottle · 08/02/2025 09:23

@EggshellAttic

Or she can do whatever she bloody well likes.

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/02/2025 09:23

People can't take a joke!

OP, I love skiing and used to go twice a year before kids. I really miss it. It's great fun. My advice would be to be prepared for uncomfortable ski boots if you're hiring (I have my own but hired the first time). Lots of layers. There are few posts on here with comprehensive lists so I won't do that, you can search them out.

Make sure you book ski school, vital as a beginner. Fitness is a huge bonus but I would really up the squats and lunges and wall sits going forward. You need very strong legs and that will also help protect your knees. Have fun!
