  • Was it fun?
  • Did you enjoy it?
  • What should I do do get ready?
  • Did it hurt?
  • Would you do it again?
  • Were you solo? with a partner? or a group?
  • Any things that surprised you about it?

A close friend of mine had arrangments, now her DH can't make it due to some work issues. So 7 days from now I'll be with her ...and it will be my first time to SKI.

I'm fit, go running 2x times a week, used to play a lot of sports, just never had the opportunity to try ski. So I expect fitness should be OK?

My friend has only skied twice before, so she classifies herself a biginners. Resort looks really nice, with some beginner areas.

Any advice appreciated!

What can be said skiiing or on a date?

DeffoNeedANameChange · 08/02/2025 09:24

Wowsers - people are grumpy this morning! I blame Trump.

Do not assume anything about fitness. You will use muscles you genuinely didn't know existed. Wall sits are the only thing that can come close.

Call it a day when you've had enough. You can ruin a whole week by pushing on for too long on day 1.

Iwilladmit · 08/02/2025 09:29

Hey OP - sorry you got the replies you did.
If there is anything else specific you want to know, do ask in here. But for what you have asked …..

  • Was it fun? THE BEST
  • Did you enjoy it? SO MUCH
  • What should I do do get ready? WALL SITS
  • Did it hurt? YES
  • Would you do it again? I DO, FREQUENTLY
  • Were you solo? with a partner? or a group? ALL OF THESE
  • Any things that surprised you about it? THE RESORTS ARE VERY RELAXED. DONT DRESS UP

Have Fun!

  • Was it fun? No
  • Did you enjoy it? No
  • What should I do do get ready? Lunges and squats
  • Did it hurt? Yes
  • Would you do it again? No
  • Were you solo? with a partner? or a group? Group
  • Any things that surprised you about it? How hot I got despite the cold weather…. I was sweating away in my salopettes.
I never want to do it again. DH however loves snowboarding and goes on a group ski/snowboard holiday every year. If I join them one day, I’ll be there just to enjoy the scenery and drink holy chocolate.

Much the same for me (@CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease I quite fancy a holy chocolate - will it make me virtuous 😇 😄).

I hated it. Now I say to capture the joy of skiing - just sit in a bath of cold water and whack your shins with a hammer!

It’s all in the legs so if you’ve good quads you should be ok.

And don’t do what my friend’s husband shouted to me when I was losing control - do not lean back!!!

RitaFromTheRanch · 08/02/2025 09:38

Christ almighty

TerrorAustralis · 08/02/2025 09:50

Do leg blasters to get ready.

Take lessons.
You will fall over, it’s part of the process. It’s easier and safer to stand up after unclipping your skis first.
Don’t overdo it – don’t do ‘just one more run’ if you’re tired. This is when accidents happen.
Wear a helmet.
Relax and have fun.

LAMPS1 · 08/02/2025 09:56

Thread your ski-gloves onto a tape and thread it through your jacket sleeves as if you were a child. Then just poke them up your sleeve if you don’t need them.
Lean forwards never backwards.
Let go of the drag lift the split second you get to the top
Be prepared to look like an absolute fool.
Relax and have fun! Beginner skiing is hilarious.

Barbie222 · 08/02/2025 09:59

Do you, now.

Nothatgingerpirate · 08/02/2025 10:02

🤨
You can spell sex.
It always was and is disgusting to me, I'm 45, stopped having sex altogether at 40, very happily.
My husband is 75, decent, all agreed, married 20 years ago both for practical reasons and convenience. Separate assets until recently.
He was only my second and last intimate partner at the age of 25.
Sex can go to hell and after I'm left without my darling husband, so can all men.
👍
Enjoy, OP, I leave it here on purpose!
Edited for typos.

Did He ski? I've heard it said He rode a bike and liked boating occasionally but I'd have thought Shanks's pony or a donkey was more His style. ;-)

LBFseBrom · 08/02/2025 10:06

This is the most ridiculous thread. Op, why not just ask what you want to ask outright instead of being coy? You make yourself looks daft (or you would if we could actually see you).

I've never ski'd, if that is at all relevant to this thread, nor would I want to. I don't like heights and the ski-lift would terrify me. Neither would I like to be stuck with a load of people I don't know without a quick way out.

The other thing is my business and all I can say about that is it improved with practice which I think is not unusual.

Nothatgingerpirate · 08/02/2025 10:18

myhotwaterbottle · 08/02/2025 09:22

😂

Definitely.
Although most beginners ski with their leg wide apart 😂 and don't let me start on learning on a ski-lift.
I'll never forget Richard Hammond in Switzerland. 😜

Have you ever ski'd though?

Yes, about thirty years ago.

Oh yes, definitely book lessons!
I recommend lessons in the morning then break for lunch, then venture out to practice in the afternoons.

which resort are you going to?

this is terrible advice! DO NOT DO THIS. You cannot have one morning ski lesson and then go solo in the afternoon having NEVER skied before. This is dangerous for you and others. Just get an adult group lesson for a week (mornings and afternoons), advise your friend to do the same. Do not go on the main slopes with your mate te gong you if she’s only been twice. This is extremely dangerous

its not that bad! It depends where they ski. If they stick to the beginners area they’ll be fine. No one is suggesting exploring the mountain!

Cattery · 08/02/2025 11:41

Good snow gloves
Learn to snow plough
Don’t “sit” on the lift that drags you up the mountain
The boots hurt like fuck

Don’t forget the magical water-skiing. (Well, without the waterskis.)

Blimey - calm down.
Im not suggesting joining friends on advanced runs for goodness sakes. I’m thinking of little practices down the baby slopes which is perfectly safe to do as a beginner.
