To not see the point in personalised reg plates?

As I sat in traffic this morning trying to work out if someone's reg was their initials or if it was meant to spell a word out, I wondered why they even bothered.

If you have a personalised registration plate, why?

This is one of those things I've just never understood why anyone would spend money on it. I'd have to have a LOT of disposable income before this is something I'd part with cash for.

Google says "The cost of a personalized number plate can range from a few hundred pounds to hundreds of thousands of pounds."

I'll be honest, and show my judgemental side. Most (not all) of the people I know with personalised reg plates are skint, or just scraping by month to month. So it really baffles me that this is something they'd chose to do with their money.

But also, even if I could afford it, what's the appeal? I'm genuinely interested to know what makes you want one?

And yes, I'm fully aware it doesn't have any impact on my life at all, but one is allowed to ponder. This entire site is full of people complaining about things that aren't relevant to them, it's just a discussion.

YABU - Personalised reg plates are wonderful and not just an expensive bit of plastic that collects dead bugs
YANBU - They're totally fucking pointless

All my cars have them but the simple 3 letters and 3 numbers ones. I’m not a fan of any that you have to misspace in order to make them look like something else.

not really vanity as such, they don’t show the year but tbh an old car is an old car regardless of the plate so it’s not hiding anything. Just a bit of fun

The misplacing of the letters and screws is so tacky !!

Smallsalt · 08/02/2025 08:59

Not even if I woke up tomorrow worth millions. They are cringe.

I find it quite amusing how many pps are prepared to judge someone solely by their numberplate.

I must admit it was never something that appealed to me but we bought one for my DD's 18th and she is delighted by it.

We are older parents and like the idea that it's something she can keep throughout her life. She doesn't like jewellery or handbags but she loves cars and her knowledge is quite something. She is quite frustrated when I haven't a clue about cars she's seen and just rolls her eyes when I say that for me a car is a functional thing.

I can assure you that she is also extremely kind and mature for her years and as far from being a dick or a wanker as anyone could be.

Let's be honest here. Everyone judges BMW drivers by their car. 😂

It came with the car and I don't think or care about it

Each to their own I suppose, but I find them a bit naff, and I think it can make you prejudge the owner.

Surely that says more about your issues.

Coolasfeck · 08/02/2025 14:59

I think some people like to place too much of a ‘backstory’ around why someone has an item e.g ‘they think they’re this or that’. You have no idea why or how they obtained the item so if it’s not bothering you then keep it moving.

I don’t have one, but if my DH decided to gift me one I’d use it. I sometimes sit behind them in traffic and try and work out what it means then forget about 10 seconds later.

I’ve been judged on here for owing an Audi. Apparently back in the day Audi drivers were all aggressive arseholes so I guess I was expected to sell it and buy another brand and be told I was a dick on a different thread for supporting China, Japan etc - lol.

More recently I’ve been judged on here for owning a Tesla which I bought years ago. According to some on here this means I’m an alt-right/Neo Nazi supporter- wtf!. Does anyone know the politics of the board of Ford Motors? If one of them was convicted of being a wife beater, does that make all Ford owners supporters of abuse who should instantly sell their car or be judged?

We are not what we own.

Stop projecting motivations and backstory’s on to other people. We can all be judged for an item we own.

Better to judge people on their behaviour.

EmeraldDreams73 · 08/02/2025 15:05

I hate them, personally! Can't see a point to them, and I really hate the 3D/bold ones that seem to be popping up everywhere as well.

Even if I could afford one, I'd choose not to, but plenty of people seem to like them.

I guess people like you are prejudging people for a lot of things which is quite a sad way to live your life.

Look at yourself. Are you happy with your life and what you spend your money on? Do you realise people buy things they like and often it's not to impress other people. They are just enjoying things and having fun. Life is short.

If it makes you feel better to judge. You are wasting your short life thinking about other people.

You might find out if you read the answers here.

Seriously though, what is there to like? Genuinely curious.

What's to like about an AI holiday? A ME+EM dress?, gel nails?, the latest smart phone?

None of those would give me the least amount of pleasure. We all like different things.

My own plate cost less the two tanks of petrol I put in the car this week.

KeepYaHeadUp · 08/02/2025 22:17

YANBU. I never understand when you see an objectively poor-to-average car worth significantly less than its number plate. Why not flog the number plate and get a half decent car??

How much do you think these number plates are costing?

KeepYaHeadUp · 08/02/2025 22:40

@Rosalina2025 - it varies. Tens to hundreds to thousands of £££s. Only today I saw a clapped out Corsa with a personalised number plate that cannot have cost much less than £4-5k.

Itcostshowmuchnow · 08/02/2025 22:42

I would never want one but they do not offend me. 3d number plates on the other hand are owned by the lowest dregs of society.

Well the numberplate on my car is probably worth more than the car, since it was written off when someone rear ended me! However, for the amount I use it I don't want a new car as its most frequent journeys are to Sainsbury's and the tip, and it does very well for those

They’re beyond tacky and mostly either for people trying to look rich or the nouveau riche.

They actually sum up a lot of what is wrong either the U.K. tbh.

Agree with most of this. Tacky, yes. Defo nouveau rich. Particularly if they're on a BMW.

Ours was £499.

@Rosalina2025 Ok...?

@Rosalina2025 - so in the hundreds of £££s category? What's your point?

And it won't depreciate. Infact the one we've got will probably appreciate.

KeepYaHeadUp · 09/02/2025 08:18

@Rosalina2025 - yours wasn't. Some are. My post was specifically that I am always perplexed when I see someone driving round in a crappy car with a spenny personalised number plate.
