To not see the point in personalised reg plates?

Flexilexy · 07/02/2025 10:17

As I sat in traffic this morning trying to work out if someone's reg was their initials or if it was meant to spell a word out, I wondered why they even bothered.

If you have a personalised registration plate, why?

This is one of those things I've just never understood why anyone would spend money on it. I'd have to have a LOT of disposable income before this is something I'd part with cash for.

Google says "The cost of a personalized number plate can range from a few hundred pounds to hundreds of thousands of pounds."

I'll be honest, and show my judgemental side. Most (not all) of the people I know with personalised reg plates are skint, or just scraping by month to month. So it really baffles me that this is something they'd chose to do with their money.

But also, even if I could afford it, what's the appeal? I'm genuinely interested to know what makes you want one?

And yes, I'm fully aware it doesn't have any impact on my life at all, but one is allowed to ponder. This entire site is full of people complaining about things that aren't relevant to them, it's just a discussion.

YABU - Personalised reg plates are wonderful and not just an expensive bit of plastic that collects dead bugs
YANBU - They're totally fucking pointless

This is just such an ignorant post.

This thread is making me want to buy one just to get people frothing when they see me.

Frothing?! I don't thibk people are angry, are they? No, just a bit of eye rolling and pity.

Haven't RTFT but I don't understand people with personalised plates who say "I don't care what other people think of it, it's just for me and I like it and why shouldn't I" etc. because... a number plate is on the OUTSIDE of a car! The whole point is it's for other people to see and identify the car, not you, because you're inside driving? Obviously people are going to see it and have opinions. They'll see it more often than you do in fact

I've just bought myself some expensive earrings. I can't see them when I wear them, but other people can. Should I not bother?!
What a ridiculous argument.

Hopping on this post - Our son got a personalised reg plate for his Christening! (From a famiy member not us). We're not sure what to do with it it only lasts 10 years and he wont be driving for at least another 7! Any advice welcome

Edited

They don't run out you just pay a retention on it. Very easy to do @HappyMamma2023

One of the advantages is that it de-ages a car. If you see a car with a normal registration plate, instantly know it’s three years old, for example. With a personalised reg, you don’t know if it’s new or five years old

Why would anyone care about that?

NameChangedOfc · 07/02/2025 17:54

Conspicuous consumption?

I'm so glad I have one. I love being a wanker.

I live in an area with initials which identify it. Many, many residents have those initials as part of personalised plates. It's a pride thing.

Not Usk is it? I'm sure the whole village has them!

Marble10 · 07/02/2025 18:01

If I was rich enough, I'd probably join the 'twats' that have one

We don't need your pity. Nobody cares about your pity.

Kimmeridge · 07/02/2025 18:25

I have one because I like it & it means something. I never understand the hate on MN for them

So you don't like them and would never have them. Big deal. Good for you.

I dont see the point in a lot of things people buy but I just accept people spend their money on different things.

CostelloJones · 07/02/2025 18:34

I hate them and think they are really wankery (I don’t even know why?) but DH has one which he’s kept from before we met and puts it on each car he has. It was a present from his parents for his first car.

So I don’t usually share that opinion 😂

Fountofwisdom · 07/02/2025 18:40

I think they are wanky and chavvy and definitely judge the driver when I’m behind one at traffic lights. However, if people want to spend their money on wanky chavvy stuff, that’s up to them.

Do people really care about what age other people think their car is? Why?

Do people really care about the registration plate on someone else's car? Why?

This. I have never understood why random people expect to "see the point" of frivolous things that other people enjoy.

snoopyfanaccountant · 07/02/2025 20:50

I have a personalised plate. I don't really do jewellery so DH bought me it for my 50th. It's my first and middle initials followed by 2 numbers and then my 3 letter surname.

thisfilmisboring123 · 07/02/2025 10:44

Personally, I think unless you're some sort of celebrity it looks tacky as fuck and screams to me that someone wants people to think they’ve got money.
To each their own though.

Why on earth are you so bothered? I could say the same about people who spend ridiculous amounts of money on designer handbags, clothes, lip fillers, etc, could go on forever. I think someone walking round in their designer gear with glaringly obvious logos and designer handbags are the ones who want to look rich, not the person who parks up in Aldi car park with a personal plate on their car, but I really couldn’t get het up about what other people spend their money on.

Some look like regular number plates though. It is just that the letters are someone's initials, or have some other meaning, that they have specifically picked (or been gifted).

I honestly couldn’t care less, spend your money as you see fit.
I was responding to the OP and I gave my opinion.

Have you ever been to the Isle of Wight? 🙂

Winterscoming77 · 08/02/2025 03:58

When I got with DH I was very much in the private regs are a bit cringe then realised they all had them , he had 2, his dad, he even had them for his kids waiting all to do with their surname. Now I’m married in I have one of his old ones and I don’t mind it too much. Means everyone knows it’s me as I live in small village and everyone knows where I am. So I get lots of waves and also texts if I’m parked outside the pub at lunchtime (walking the dog - honest!) which isn’t great if you love your privacy I’m not bothered though. Number one bonus as a relatively new private plate wanker is at car park payment machines, toll and congestion charge websites and any other paperwork. Never changes.

He was so proud to present my daughter (name changed after our wedding) hers on her birthday all wrapped up.

it’s harmless. Do people think we’re a bunch of nobs for having them all on the drive? Definitely. Do we care? Not really.

RedRumRoams · 08/02/2025 04:06

They’re beyond tacky and mostly either for people trying to look rich or the nouveau riche.

They actually sum up a lot of what is wrong either the U.K. tbh.
