To not see the point in personalised reg plates?

Flexilexy · 07/02/2025 10:17

As I sat in traffic this morning trying to work out if someone's reg was their initials or if it was meant to spell a word out, I wondered why they even bothered.

If you have a personalised registration plate, why?

This is one of those things I've just never understood why anyone would spend money on it. I'd have to have a LOT of disposable income before this is something I'd part with cash for.

Google says "The cost of a personalized number plate can range from a few hundred pounds to hundreds of thousands of pounds."

I'll be honest, and show my judgemental side. Most (not all) of the people I know with personalised reg plates are skint, or just scraping by month to month. So it really baffles me that this is something they'd chose to do with their money.

But also, even if I could afford it, what's the appeal? I'm genuinely interested to know what makes you want one?

And yes, I'm fully aware it doesn't have any impact on my life at all, but one is allowed to ponder. This entire site is full of people complaining about things that aren't relevant to them, it's just a discussion.

YABU - Personalised reg plates are wonderful and not just an expensive bit of plastic that collects dead bugs
YANBU - They're totally fucking pointless

Dh has them for his work vehicles with the name of the business on them.
I think they’re stupid but it’s bugger all to do with me. He offered to buy one for my car about 10 years ago but I declined as I’ve always thought they were showy offy! And they would look especially stupid on my not especially new or fancy car 😂
Every now and then he asks if I fancy the plates - it will always be a no but good to see where we’re both at!

I have one that goes like this (changed details obvs)

My initial - A
Birthday - 13

DD inital - T
DS initial - MA

A13 TMA

So.. it means something to me and my two young children love it

Also - DH bought it and sorted it for my birthday so I didn't even choose it 🤷🏽‍♀️

People get more annoyed that it's on a white RR 🤣

😂

Love it.

A weird thing to be worked up about.
I know a few people who have personalised number plates. One is just a shortened version of his name and one number. He has it on his Motability car, if you want to froth over that too.
Another loves her job, and has her job title (ODP) as part of her number plate.

In both cases, it means a lot to them hence why they have them.

Sansan18 · 07/02/2025 16:20

I've kept the numberplate from my first car and it doesn't spell any of our names but has 3 of the same digits and I just like it.I'm not sure if want my name on my registration but can see why people become fond of their number plates.

MrsKeats · 07/02/2025 16:20

Height of naffness.

I used to see a purple car around town with the plate V10 LET, and thought it was quite cool. Saw it a few years later and it was on a blue car and I felt quite disappointed that she'd changed the colour.

Saw one that said SUE 1M, presumably a lawyer. Also 50 BER, always parked outside a pub.

It's the ones that don't quite spell what the person is trying to say that seem a waste of time and money to me, or they have to alter the spacing or put the screw cover in a weird place so it makes a F look like an E or something.

I, like some PPs, have one which is not obviously personalised to others but means something to me. It's a reference to a TV show of which I am a fan, followed by my initials, but most people won't get it. There are about a dozen other fans across Britain who have the same format plate. I got tooted once by one coming in the other direction and we waved heartily at one another. No idea who they were but it was like being in a secret club! I've been asked about it a few times in the 15 or so years I've had it by guys who do get it. IYKYK.

Not expensive at all, cost me about £250. I've spent more on outfits that I didn't get the same wear from. I guess it's a bit like jewellery, serves no purpose other than to make us feel good, but there's nothing wrong with that.

FFS is that all you have to think about?

That's my opinion of people who have them.

WhichOneIsPosher · 07/02/2025 16:36

scorpiogirly · 07/02/2025 10:29

What I don't get with this though is why does anyone care what others think? Why do they want others to think they have a 'new' car? Especially when most people on the road don't even know who you are?

This reminds me of someone I know. He got finance on a brand new Polestar, he still lives with his parents. It's under lunacy to me.

The fact people care if others know they're driving an older car sounds like a "them" problem more than anything else

I also used to have a numberplate for a favourite TV show, but it's on retention ATM because I finally managed to get my name🎉🎉💥
So - if anyone's a fan of Bodie and Doyle, The Professionals - I've got something you might like!

Rosalina2025 · 07/02/2025 17:05

Graeme Hall's got one and I wouldn't say he's a chav 😄

Whoarethoseguys · 07/02/2025 17:05

Snowmanscarf · 07/02/2025 10:20

One of the advantages is that it de-ages a car. If you see a car with a normal registration plate, instantly know it’s three years old, for example. With a personalised reg, you don’t know if it’s new or five years old

But do you care how old someone else's car is? I have never looked at anyone's number plate and cared about how old their car is.

Fencehedge · 07/02/2025 17:07

It's a dick badge.

TorroFerney · 07/02/2025 17:10

wipeywipe · 07/02/2025 10:51

I thought people often have them so you can't tell the age of a car?

Not near me, they are on £100k range rovers. However they aren’t the ones where if you squint they possibly could look like a name these are the BF 15 type which I assume are expensive? There does seem to be a correlation between people who have them and people who park a Ross two spaces at the supermarket (booths).

Whoarethoseguys · 07/02/2025 17:05

But people might if they are doing business. Image matters in some circles.

justasking111 · 07/02/2025 17:14

Some of them really appreciate in value over the years.

hby9628 · 07/02/2025 17:17

@Rosalina2025 mine is similar
My initials & lucky number
DH initials

Works perfectly. I tried to integrate the kids in to it but it got complicated. They can have their own when they learn to drive so we can all be judged for being naff 🤣

OldTinHat · 07/02/2025 17:18

I live in an area with initials which identify it. Many, many residents have those initials as part of personalised plates. It's a pride thing.

JT69 · 07/02/2025 17:21

I have a plate. It was my 40th pressie from DH so special to me. I’ve a short surname of three letters so they fit on the plate. Each to our own.

Popular10 · 07/02/2025 17:22

Mine was a gift and I think they probably struggled with what else to buy. It wasnt extortionate and is specific to me so I know itll always be mine. We are reasonably off but I dont drive a brand new car as Im tight and car goes down 20k for 3 years old.
One of the best things is someone who is very jealous was questioning me trying to find out how old the car was... I mean you can still google MOT and itll tell you but I found their not so subtle questioning quite funny because I dont give a shit about material things particularly or what you do or dont have, I just like it for me.
Its very much a...dont like it dont have one

Most people are capable of thinking about quite a lot of things. Can't you?

LadyWiddiothethird · 07/02/2025 17:30

I like them on cars that clearly cost a bomb and so does the registration number.

But think people with no money are twats that have them,a family near me that are as rough as old poke all have them, including the boyfriend of one who drives around in a bright orange old heap of a car, they are all cheap registrations as well!

waving to @bluesatin before changing username.... 😁

I find that incredibly tacky, but hey, people can do whatever they want, and I can judge them for that, so we're all winning somehow.

ThePoshUns · 07/02/2025 17:42

This thread is making me want to buy one just to get people frothing when they see me.
