Bin men! Ridiculous

Has anyone else got this problem with there local council! The bin men take the rubbish every 2 weeks, so our rubbish mounts up to the point we have to put it on top of the bin, bare in mind we have baby and a dog so we have quite a lot of rubbish in the two weeks when they bother to collect. They’ve come yesterday and emptied our bin but just left the rubbish on the top!!!!! So now our bin is full again and still got 2 weeks to go. So annoyed with it, I just don’t understand why they can’t come every week.

The way to do it is to get a second recycling bin. Ours is quite happy for multiple recycling bins. It’s quite rare we totally fill our rubbish even when we had little ones in nappies.

My partner is the worst for it, he won’t care and put it in someone else’s bin but I’ve told him off many times for it 🙈 and yeah it’s hard to manage, I feel like we have a lot of deliveries so our recycling is full up to the top& then like I said we just have a lot of food wastage where our freezer isn’t working and everything just mounts up I suppose.

Honestly OP I think you need to work on reducing the amount of waste you produce. It sounds like an awful lot

WhatWasPromised · 06/02/2025 20:34

Ours will take extra bags of recycling in clear bags or flattened cardboard left by the bin.

So really you can have infinite recycling each fortnight if you wanted

user2848502016 · 06/02/2025 20:35

Why is your bin so full after only 2 weeks? They only collect every 3 weeks where we are and our bin is never overflowing (2 adults, 2 DC a cat and a dog).
The recycling and food waste goes weekly. Are you recycling everything you can?

Also our council's policy is that they're not supposed to collect loose bin bags that don't fit in the bin - to encourage recycling. It's not the bin men's fault.

Pebbles16 · 06/02/2025 19:31

But presumably you have a car?
Many of us in inner cities don't.
We recycle everything we can.
We have fortnightly bin collections but litter pick for the local area (because you get a street cleaner once every sixth months) and guess what? The litter picking takes up 75% of my black bin

Yes, you are quite right. The supermarket bit is much harder for anyone who doesn't drive (but I don't believe that applies to OP, because when a tip run suggested she made the 'what is council tax for' quid).

But good for you on the litter picking! Wish there were more people like you around!

Bryonyberries · 06/02/2025 20:36

Our council will give bags you can use for any excess although they are expensive to buy compared to bin bags but possibly easier than doing a dump run.

I think they should collect weekly - generally and recycling - so that fly tipping is discouraged.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/02/2025 20:37

our recycling bin is full too but probably don’t recycle as much as we should admittedly

We can't put out extra actual rubbish but they are always happy to take additional recycling. We have separate bags for bottles / card / cans & plastic and often pile extra cardboard up at the side or put out an additional receptacle for bottles.

The council is romford and no they want you to put the rubbish in front of your house outside the bin, it’s not recycling, search it up if you don’t believe me

I don't think people think you're not telling the truth....just your first post makes it sound as though you do infact use a refuge bin due to you saying they left 2 bags...confusing as to why if you have to take the bags out of the bin and place them next to it they didn't take the two you say were left as well.

TickingAlongNicely · 06/02/2025 19:05

Have you checked to see if you can get an extra collection for nappies? Some councils do them.

Yes and sometimes you can get a bigger bin. Not sure how you qualify but where I live some people do have them.

Goldwhisper · 06/02/2025 20:39

Can’t be bothered to recycle properly then complains general waste is too full.. lol

Isobel201 · 06/02/2025 20:43

Ask a neighbour if you can put a bag in their bin?

Anonforthis58 · 06/02/2025 20:44
  1. Have you asked the council for a bigger bin?
  2. You could also try bagging up your plastic packaging/bread wrappers etc and taking them to supermarkets when you’re out - most have plastic recycling storage now. That cut down massively for me and left loads of room in the bin. I was genuinely shocked at how much space I had after just keeping out wrappers/bags etc.
  3. If neither of these 2 options suit then you’ll have to go to your local tip/recycling centre
Julieju1 · 06/02/2025 20:45

It is tough isn't it. We've gone past the nappy stage and don't have a pet. We have weekly recycling collections, non-recyclables are collected every 3 weeks.
We haven't needed to put the non-recyclables out since the 23rd December, and the wheelie bin is only a 3rd full.
My advice:
Plan your meals, only buy what you plan to eat.
Choose items with less packaging when you can.
Have different bins in the kitchen if you have space, including a big bin for soft plastic wrappers.
Have 2 bins in the bathroom, one for recycling, the other for non-recyclables.
Recycle as much as you can, take soft plastic to the supermarket if you can.
Good luck.

Why do we pay council tax?

If they did weekly collections it would cost more. We'd all be paying more council tax and as most of us manage with the 2 week collections we don't want to. Well I don't anyway.

I do use a wheelie bin now I’ve moved, you havent read the whole conversation. People are saying it’s been a rule since the 90s that you can put rubbish on top of your bin because of health/safety etc, but my point was that’s not for everywhere as when I lived in Havering council. They had rules they wouldn’t take your rubbish unless it was outside the bin…

Viviennemary · 06/02/2025 20:49

You are not supposed to pile rubbish on top of your bin. You need to recycle more. Some councils can supply you with a bigger bin.

Check it when they deliver and if dates are too short give it back and you get a credit.

You really don't need to be rude.

anothernameanotherplanet · 06/02/2025 20:49

Can you put a child in the bin and bounce them up and down to compress the rubbish?

Not having children at home anymore I occasionally have to do this.

Calling people ‘karens’ because they say things that make you defensive is sexist, ageist and downright fucking rude. You’re a grown up, do some basic household management, sort your rubbish out, stop whining that the bin men won’t do it for you, snowflake.

OldTinHat · 06/02/2025 20:51

Don't even start me on this one!

Mine collect every 2wks. After phone call and phone call several times a week, mine was finally emptied last week. First time since mid December.

They said my bin was 'not presented'. I sent the council video footage of them lifting up my bin lid, grabbing the black bag, dropping it back in and walking off.

You have to go by the rules where you live not where you used to live.

You’re literally wasting time out of your day to comment on my post, if you don’t like what I say then scroll on? You don’t have to comment if you don’t agree. There’s people that been helpful and advised ideas on how to reduce wastage and then there’s people who are just sitting here criticising and being rude.

Whotenanny · 06/02/2025 20:54

You need to improve your waste management.

✅ Washable puppy pads
✅ Use a food bin for any wastage
✅ Recycle more

We're a family of five, with one baby in nappies, and the elder two in night time nappies. Our small black wheelie bin is rarely full 🤷‍♀️

Edited to add: stop using best before/use by dates. If it looks okay, feels okay, doesn't stink, and does not taste rancid then it's absolutely fine to eat.

Barney16 · 06/02/2025 20:55

You have to squash it down. And recycle. OH is terrible at recycling. I have been known to go through put black bin wearing marigolds to take out the recyclable stuff.
