What's the longest you've stayed in a job?

I'm in my mid 30s, and apart from a 5-year job prior to and during uni, I've never stayed in a job for more than 2.5 years, average is 18 months. I have mostly moved for valid reasons, which were relocation, fixed term role, left to do my PGCE, left on promotion/higher wage etc.

Once or twice I've left as I was being bullied at the organisation and wasn't possible to move teams/organisation was very cliquey and I didn't fit in.

I'm at a point now where I just want to get established in something and stay in for at least a few years and work my way up.

Pressed send too early.. I've got friends who've been in the same company since graduating and have just worked their way up, e.g. NHS band 7 or 8 now, and I just feel embarrassed next to them in a way.

I'm 35 and have worked since I was 15. The longest I have stayed somewhere is 6 years and I got two promotions in that time.

tinydynamine · 05/02/2025 18:23

25 years and counting in the same job, almost 33 years in the profession.

ViciousCurrentBun · 05/02/2025 18:24

6,8,6,16 years, now retired.

Catza · 05/02/2025 18:25

My penultimate role - about 15 years in total, the last 4 years were ad hock as I technically left to study full time but still returned to do odd bits for the company when I had time.
Currently employed in the NHS for 5 years but changed teams and Trusts three times in that period. Love my current team and hoping to remain here till retirement (so another 26 years).

Sailorchick14 · 05/02/2025 18:25

Longest time was 16 years in same company. Had a few sideways moves and a secondment at higher grade but somehow stayed in same team for most of it.

In current company / post for two years. Still enjoy it but starting to look for next move, hopefully in same company.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/02/2025 18:26

18 years.

feemcgee · 05/02/2025 18:26

Ten years, I'm 49. It was a comfortable job with a nice team, but when the chance to take voluntary redundancy came up, I took it. I wanted more experience and couldn't see a career path in that role.

givemespringtime · 05/02/2025 18:26

I've been doing the same job for 10 years so far. My dad has been in his same job since he was 16. He's now 62

glasshouse · 05/02/2025 18:26

30 plus years and counting.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/02/2025 18:26

My first job was about 9 months before I moved to this one in 1986...planning on retiring next month. So >38 years.

RIPVPROG · 05/02/2025 18:27

Job or employer? I've been with my current employer 15 years but have had a number of roles/promotions and secondments. Do I don't do the same job I did fifteen years ago, but I work for the same organisation

TibetanTea · 05/02/2025 18:27

@ErrolTheDragon what's the job??

ItGhoul · 05/02/2025 18:27

I’ve been in my current job for eight years was in my previous one for about six years, but before that I’d never stayed anywhere longer than three years at the absolute most.

Merryoldgoat · 05/02/2025 18:28

9 years - current job. I still like it and can’t see moving for a few more years.

lissie123 · 05/02/2025 18:29

Ten years. I get bored. And want more money and found moving helps to significantly increase my salary.

Spacecowboys · 05/02/2025 18:29

Same job, around 11 years. Same employer over 20 years.

AlisonWhatIsTheMatter · 05/02/2025 18:30

Current one, 17 years and trying to desperately find another job.

greengreyblue · 05/02/2025 18:30

6m, 10 yrs, 6yrs, 10yrs and counting.

Ihateboris · 05/02/2025 18:31

34 years. Started working as a secretary at age 16, and the job came to an (abrupt) end when I was 50, as my lovely boss passed away 😢. I'd probably still be working for him if he hadn't sadly died xx

dizzydizzydizzy · 05/02/2025 18:33

Worked freelance with the same person at the same customer for 20 years. As an employee, my longest stint is 8 years.

SnaccidentsHappen · 05/02/2025 18:34

Been working since since I was 14 and I think this is the longest job - will be 7yrs in May
