Poorly

Aibu to find it really annoying how English people use this word?

Sick. You mean sick. Unwell. Under the weather.

Unless the question is "how did Rangers perform?" and the answer is "lol poorly" it has no place in the English language.

I don’t use “poorly” however I find “sick” being used to mean any generic illness rather than actual vomiting, far more irritating than “poorly”.

That is the normal usage in many places though.
You’re just not accustomed to it being used in that sense, but it’s not wrong.

Same

Scottish person living in Yorkshire - nearly everyone uses "poorly" here, myself included. What's so offensive about it? It describes perfectly what is wrong - someone in poor health.

Rangers are shite though, agree with you there.

netflixfan · 05/02/2025 16:53

Are you not English then?

netflixfan · 05/02/2025 16:55

when I was at school it was a euphemism for being on your period. Also "unwell"

wherearemypastnames · 05/02/2025 16:57

Poorly means poorly but not dreadfully ill

Suck means upchucking

wherearemypastnames · 05/02/2025 16:57

Sick! Apologies no edit on the app

Blankscreen · 05/02/2025 16:58

It annoys me when people say they are 'sick' when they are unwell/poorly.

To me you are 'sick' if you are throwing up

YABU and weird.

I'm from Birmingham. It's pronounced 'poo-lee'.

Oh I’m not saying it’s wrong, I don’t correct people in real life if they say it (except my child). It’s just a fleeting irritation.

I'll tell my 93 year old grandmother that you think saying 'poorly' is infantile then? She'll fall off her chair laughing at such a pathetic and ludicrous comment. YOU are the only one making infantile comments dear........ Wink

As for the comments about NHS websites and doctors and the words they use, and why .. You have clearly had experience of this. They never use these words with me. They clearly do with you. Nuff said! 😂

Goodness, I really touched a nerve there! Sorry... I touched an owie owie.
