Can Meibomian gland dysfunction get better? I can’t stand the constant burning eyes everyday!

Mine resolved spontaneously, so there is hope. I had one chalazion that needed surgical removal. My optician recommended spray and wipes that eased the symptoms.

@fromthegecko How long did you suffer for? I keep doing heat compress daily but feel like I’m not getting anywhere!

It was at least thirty years ago, so I don't remember. I just remember it seemed unbearable, but I bore it, because you don't have a choice. And it sort of fizzled out. I woke up one day and thought 'oh, my eyes don't feel so bad'. It was probably months rather than weeks.

I have this and sad to say I’ve tried everything (opticians/eye hospital/compresses/eye drops/no skin care or makeup/ massage/ heat masks/supplements etc etc). None of it made any difference at all.
Hopefully yours will respond to treatment, but it might not.
Doing everything above is worth a go though.

@Suffernsocotash You poor thing, I’m so sorry! How long have you been suffering for?

I’ve just been told I have this. I’m on day 5 of using an eye mask and massaging twice a day. My eyes are feeling a bit better than they were so I’m hoping that this carries on 🤞

Has anyone had any success with this? I've just seen a private consultant and have this, he said to do heat masks and eye drops but it's forever? Also maybe IPL but that is way out of our price bracket.
I find it hard to fit in two heat masks a day

I also had a chalazion ten years ago. I did compresses for several months after but it did just resolve when I left it.

@jillybean18 i find the heat mask really helps, but then as soon as my symptoms start to improve I forgot to do the heat mask and they come back again! I’m like you, I find it really hard to fit in heat masks twice a day with having such a busy life!

I do my last heat mask of the day just before I go to sleep. I find it very relaxing. The first one is with a cup of tea in bed or just after I’ve eaten breakfast. I’ve made it part of my routine.

jillybean18 · 28/02/2025 09:01

@Isla28
Have you mainly kept it at bay with the heat masks? It's so hard to find the time but the ipl treatment is £1000 all in Shock
