Travelling up the motorway today I was surprised to see so many drivers with phones in a hand.

And not sat nav apps for sure, definitely saw WhatsApp, messaging, some sort of videos, face times and even one ebay!

How has need to distract oneself become become more important to some drivers than road safety?

YABU, little bit of ebay when on cruise at 70 is low risk

YANBU driving with a phone is bloody risky

The drivers had phones in their hands but you could see "WhatsApp, messaging, some sort of videos, face times and even one ebay"? How close to them were you driving that you could see that level of detail?

FourEyesGood · 02/02/2025 18:17

I see this all the time. Frankly, it’s terrifying.

I was wondering about that.

But YANBU it’s dangerous and illegal.

I don't believe for one second you were able to see people's phone screens in such detail at 70mph either.

If you were driving then you were just as bad as them. If you were a passenger then you need to have a word with whoever was driving because they were far to close to other cars and therefore driving dangerously too.

Or you're wildly exaggerating to try and spark discussion.

As a passenger, when we were overtaking on the motorway, in the dark, I could clearly see a guys phone in a cradle, with someone on facetime!
I think it's was more obvious as it was dark and the screen was lit up!

GretaGip · 02/02/2025 18:57

Yes I was a passenger. Nowhere in OP did I say I was driving.

If we're going at 70, car in left is doing 68, then we're alongside for a few seconds.

I'd bet anyone could glance at a phone for a tenth of a second and recognise WhatsApp.

Driving too close? Car has Lane Keep assist, so we're bang in the centre of the lines. Perhaps the driver on their phone is slightly right in their lane?

Yes this was my experience -dusk and dark driving, very noticeable.

But still, their screen was presumably facing them, not facing out the window.

Sorry I still think you're exaggerating.

I am a bus driver and I see this all the time when I'm stuck in traffic but cars coming the other way are moving freely. Lots of them with phones in their laps glancing up at the road every few seconds

We have have a high vehicle, so the phones sort of in the laps are quite easy to see from that angle.

I was cycling home the other day and pulled up behind a motorbike rider who was skimming through Facebook Reels on his phone while waiting at a red light. So dangerous

Lambington · 02/02/2025 22:20

The police have no interest in enforcement so a the good proportion of idiots that are on the roads will unfotunately do what they want and get away with it.
