I've got a Victorian egg house I found in a junk - sorry, antique- shop - a specially designed small cupboard with two shelves which have circles to rest the eggs in. You attach it to a wall so no issues with ' too much stuff on the side'. Similar to the meat larders you occasionally see.

I suppose adding vinegar to the water might help the white solidify if the eggs break, but generally that's something you do when poaching eggs.

Not convinced refrigeration will extend the life as British eggs are not chlorine washed as in the US; but happy to be corrected.

My main issue is I have ridiculously sensitive finger tips and find it hard to slice the lid off! Can't manage with a tea towel etc. Ideas welcome!

I don't have a wall space in my kitchen!

Anyone else delighted to see a thread demonstrating that AIBU can be a force for good!? 😂

Loving the range of egg cooking methods.

I put a fridge cold egg into boiling water for 6 minutes and it seems to work. The whole 3 minutes for a boiled egg must be a different method because experience tells me that leads to a raw horrible mess of an egg.

This is what i do and it’s pretty spot on most of the time. Except mine is room temperature.

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 01/02/2025 14:53

You are all crazy! 6 minutes makes the yolk solid and not remotely dippy. 3-4 minutes is more than adequate if you add the eggs to already boiling water and want the yolk runny.

I know.I have tried those. A sad failure. Just couldn't get it to work but maybe useful for other readers!

I am wincing at the right hand holding the egdg in that picture! Arrrghh

@Piggywaspushed Well the answer is obvious then! You need to move to a larger property with more wall space. No price is too high when it comes to,producing The Perfect Egg Wink

Yes, it is a different method. You put the egg into cold water and give it 3 minutes from when the water comes to the boil, so the egg has already been cooking gradually during the time when the water is coming to the boil. I think all the comments saying 'My egg would be hard boiled after 6 minutes!' and 'My egg would be sloppy after only 3 minutes!' are based on not realising about the cold vs hot water thing.

Advice in UK & lots of Europe is not to keep eggs in the fridge!

User28473 · 01/02/2025 15:07

The differences are room temp egg Vs fridge temp egg. Anyone in the UK should not be refrigerating their eggs, as it weakens the shell, and means they spoil more quickly, and lengthens cooking time. If you are in a country where the eggs are chemical treated they need to be refrigerated. I always Google Jamie Oliver for egg booking times, which is 5 minutes for soft boiled, straight in boiling water not cold.

Superhansrantowindsor · 01/02/2025 15:08

Boil rapidly a room temp egg for 3and half minutes.

😂 But to me, you and everyone else are crazy!
I put the egg from the fridge into cold water and bring it to the boil. I time from when it starts boiling. 2.5 mins for a small egg and 3 mins or just over, for a large egg. Very easy.

stampin · 01/02/2025 15:18

Some mornings my kitchen is freezing, so room temperature is a bit fridge like.

I go with eggs in cold water and bring to the boil. Start the time from when then eggs start to move in the pan. 3 minutes from then.

This is me and they always turn out perfectly. Slice the top off both eggs, though, or they will continue to cook.

HurdyGurdy19 · 01/02/2025 12:28

In the airfryer, 7 minutes at 170 😁

180C for 9 mins = hard boiled. Incredibly convenient!

Happysack · 01/02/2025 15:41

Room temperature egg into boiling water for 2 minutes, no lid. Turn off the heat and cover for a further 2 minutes. Perfect every time.

No it's not- 3 minutes for a large cold egg is not enough to set the white. 6-7 minutes gives a set white and runny yolk otherwise you will have a snotty egg!

Air fryer eggs were a revelation to me!

I am, blowing my own trumpet, a very good cook. But I have a blind spot with boiling eggs, they are either almost raw or solid as a rock! No matter what method I try, timings etc, I just cant do it! But 6.5 minutes at 160 in the air fryer and they are perfect every time.

Is there anything that those machines cant do?!

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/02/2025 15:52

Do you have to shoogle the eggs in the air fryer to cook them evenly or do you just stick them in on the bottom and set the timer and get them out when done?

2JFDIYOLO · 01/02/2025 15:54

Did it all come out nicely? 🤓

chattyness · 01/02/2025 15:57

when you boil eggs prick a small hole in the large end to help prevent cracking & add a pinch of salt and a splash of vinegar to the water to seal them quickly if they do
