Have water at a rolling boil before you add the egg.

6 minutes for a large room temp egg. Add 30 seconds for fridge temp and add/deduct 30 seconds for going up/down a size.

Put straight into cold water once cooked for a minute or 2

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 01/02/2025 12:55

I go with eggs in cold water and bring to the boil. Start the time from when then eggs start to move in the pan. 3 minutes from then.

Nellieinthebarn · 01/02/2025 13:04

If the egg is a bit over done you can always do an eggy cup instead. Just peel your egg, mash it with butter and a bit of salt, and serve in a cup with toast. I suspect eggy cup was invented for this situation.

Puts me in a bad mood for an unreasonable amount of time if my eggs get overdone. Mashing it at least relieves some of the crossness!

BogRollBOGOF · 01/02/2025 13:13

I'm 5 minutes simmering in hot water (large eggs from room temperature)

I grew up with advice being 3 mins, but presumably that's based on eggs being smaller.

Firm eggs are a crushing disappointment.

REP22 · 01/02/2025 13:21

I've recently bought myself a Salter 3-in-1 Digital Egg Cooker (£20 in Argos) after seeing my DN get one at Christmas for his uni digs. Does perfect boiled eggs, however dippy or otherwise you like them, a poached egg or an omelette. Money very well-spent, I feel. Only an increased risk of becoming egg-bound through over-consumption. 😉

Delia’s method is foolproof.

Room temperature egg in a rolling boil for one minute. Removed from the heat and cover. Leave for 6 minutes and it’s perfect.

Removing it from the boil prevents the egg cracking while it’s jiggling about in the pan.

My lovely, late stepmother taught me this method and it's never failed. I didn't realise she got it from Delia Smith!

Am I the only one surprised by how many people keep eggs in the fridge?

In the supermarket they are on the shelf, not the fridge. It is only American eggs that go in the fridge because they are chlorine washed which takes a layer of shell off so they go off faster.

Fridge cold eggs would be a pain for baking and timing boiled and poached eggs.

No, I was surprised too.

Cherryandpineapple · 01/02/2025 13:30

Sorry to ask a stupid question but are you saying to put the egg in the air fryer on its own. Not in any water? I’d like to try this method out.

chattyness · 01/02/2025 13:33

A medium size egg from room temp in boiling water with a touch of salt & vinegar added to the water is 4 minutes, fr a soft boil, add and another half minute for a large egg.
If I'm in a hurry then I cook mine cracked open into a vented soup cup in the microwave. Generally 30 seconds for a small egg is usually perfect, then open the lid to both release the pressure & see if it's done, if it's not, replace lid and put back in checking every 10 seconds until done, don't be tempted to leave it longer, because if you don't release the pressure that quickly builds up the lid will blow off and you will have a stinky over cooked eggy messy to clean up .it's not pleasant.

Priddy · 01/02/2025 13:34

Room-temperature egg into boiling water for 5 minutes.

A 6 minute egg won't be runny enough to dip.

Don't understand this. I cooked boiled eggs yesterday and two of them (room temperature) cracked within about 20 seconds of being placed carefully in the rolling boil water.

Papyrophile · 01/02/2025 13:41

Room temperature eggs, into boiling water for 4:45m for one egg, + 15 seconds for every additional egg.

They are cooked if the shells dry immediately.

Topsyturvy78 · 01/02/2025 13:42

I can never get dippy eggs right. So do poached eggs much easier to see when their done and don't have the hassle of the egg shell.

fluffyblanky · 01/02/2025 12:28

Ok.. so I am going with the water boiling and 6 mins once the eggs are put in. Do I keep it boiling or simmering?

Probably be rock solid, the soldiers will need a mechanical digger! 3-4 minutes depending on the size of the egg.

Yes, I put them on the crisper plate (can't be bothered to take it out) and that's it. Sometimes it helps to put the eggs into cold water for a minute or so after you take them out (again - I can't be bothered) as it helps with taking the shell off

Sorry CAN

Phew! I had visions of a Mumsnet lynch mob coming for me, lobbing their mis-boiled eggs at me 😅

yes just straight into the basket, no water or anything else.

I’ve went back to boiling mine after getting one of these. Perfect every time!

To cook a Soft boiled egg put room temp egg in a pan of cold water, bring to rolling boil then simmer for 3 mins.

Not relevant I know -but “dippy” egg gives me the same rage as “picky bits” - just stop it !

Me too!
Dippy egg sounds juvenile, but better than picky bits that reminds me of a toddler with a finger rammed up their nose 🤢

Egg with Soldiers is what we call a boiled egg in an egg cup.

oakleaffy · 01/02/2025 13:52

However “ Egg with soldiers is bound to set other people’s teeth on edge.

“Dippy egg” at least is descriptive.

DrEggman · 01/02/2025 13:58

Put them in the air fryer, 6 minutes. It’s just so easy! Glad they turned out well.
