Would you hire a morbidly obese Nanny?

whompingwillo · 01/02/2025 11:50

I would like to hire someone we’ve met for my 9 month old baby. She’s fab, great with kids, lovely, I have no concerns.

I would estimate her BMI is 50-60 and my husband noticed that it is a struggle for her to get up and down off the floor and he is worried that if baby was in danger she may struggle.

So what would you do? Do you think that weight could impact a job like this? I’m sure people of this weight have their own children and are safe to look after them?

YABU - morbid obesity could impact her ability to do this job

YANBU - she’ll be fine

Yes morbidly obese people of course own dogs. Usually the lapdog variety that require garden toilet breaks and maybe 5mins around the block. I never see them marching on with a couple of high energy dogs.

Most morbidly obese people do not walk briskly for miles on challenging ground, If they did they would lose weight. This isn't a personality attack, it is an observation. My own lived experience and I've lived and worked all over.

I didn't say eat less move more, I said combine healthy eating with increased physical activity. It obviously isnt easy it requires serious commitment and motivation, it may be an outdated idea but it actually works.

Ask those who have lost weight how they did it and I guarantee they consumed less. Not easy granted, but the solution nonetheless. I've just eaten far too much after an energetic walk however the walk will have used up calories but if I overindulged daily without activity I would pile the pounds on in no time.

I've been polite throughout, I don't look down on obese people at all but the denial doesn't help. There is no way walking miles and only eating fruit and veg would makes someone obese, sorry if some find that an annoying fact to state.

You have no idea about what it's like to be obese and try your best and still not lose weight. You may have been polite, but you are very patronising. Lapdogs indeed! Also you aren't stating fact, you are stating what you BELIEVE to be fact, not the same thing at all. Like I say you can't see that obesity is more than stop eating and start moving.

So… you’re questioning my experience on the matter I presume.
Why?
How does my answer make what I said more or less true?

Or are you just probing if I have / lack empathy or understanding for the plight of obese people?

Because that’s not what I said.
So please, enlighten me why you ask that question.

My bet is you’ll try and use ‘an exception to prove a norm’ case, some sort of medical rarity of an individual who only eats lettuce, drinks water, runs 10k every day before sunrise, yet through a rare illness still seems to have 40 BMI that rising and has the doctors at the university absolutely baffled…

No I am simply asking if you know how it feels to be obese and looked down on by you and people like you?

What's is wrong with lapdogs! It is what they are called, those little shitzus etc and other small dogs. They sit on laps. I wouldn't fancy my 30k dog sat on mine..

Ah, I'll tell my large, high energy, working-breed dogs that I'm owning dogs wrong, then.

It doesn't matter what we say squid, we will never be believed.
As a side note I have a new job role starting on Monday, my work times have changed, so I will be walking the 2.5 miles(uphill too) to work every day as well as my normal steps, so it will be interesting to see whether my weight will drop or not, i'm going to say not.

Wow what a horrible comment!
So what if she doesn't walk, she can still take her dogs out in her wheelchair! Or you know have someone else walk them.

I didn’t say she couldn’t take her dogs out for Christ sake and you know it!!!! She tried to suggest she as an obese person still takes her ‘high energy, working-breed dogs’ out for a long walk!!!

No, exactly. Apparently they're all hell bent on how "eat less, move more" is the answer and they've solved obesity for all of human kind. Only I don't eat, and I move quite a lot, so...

Good luck in your new role!

I'm glad I didn't see what that person above said, as it was probably upsetting, but if it was a suggestion that a disabled or obese person shouldn't have working breed dogs, then that just goes to show how uneducated they are.

I know, we just need to not be lazy and greedy. It is so tiresome! If only it was that easy huh.

Thank you, it's somethibg I haven't done before and i'm looking forward to it.

No it wasn't that it was just rude and sounded accusatory.

We've discussed this earlier, as you are tube fed your dietician is being negligent if you are morbidly obese. Feeds are strictly calculated fo balance calories in and energy used. You said you don't want unsolicited advice but someone needs to tell your dietician they are being incompetent. Best wishes.

I think it is great that you have a high energy dog who gets walked miles every day, fresh air is good for us all.

No obviously not, I'm again just stating facts. Tube feeds are strictly calculated by dieticians, if a patient is morbidly obese they are getting the wrong amount. Someone is making a mistake somewhere.

I'm neither judgemental rude or nasty, you know that.

Or it could be that obesity is caused by more than just the amount of food or in this case tube feeds. Rude no, but you are quite judgemental and whether you mean it or not it does come across as nasty.

Unless I am completely dense, I just don’t see how it is physically possible for someone to consume fewer calories than they burn each day and become obese. I can absolutely understand that some people lose weight quicker than others due to metabolic rates but how is it scientifically possible to gain weight or even remain at a very high weight if you eat fewer calories than you burn?

What would cause someone to gain weight if they weren’t taking in additional calories?

I completely agree that different people have different hormonal levels, insulin resistance, metabolic rates etc, all of which impact weight.

However, if a person fasts for a week, they're going to lose weight. It's impossible to eat nothing and yet not lose weight.

Sure, some people are genetically luckier than others and can eat anything and stay thin, while others put on weight very easily. But there is very clearly something in our modern lifestyle that is leading us to put on weight. Otherwise how do you explain the massive rise in obesity rates compared to 50 years ago?

Perhaps if we started eating more like people did back then (less processed food, less sugar, less eating out, fewer snacks) we'd be better off.
