Would you hire a morbidly obese Nanny?

whompingwillo · 01/02/2025 11:50

I would like to hire someone we’ve met for my 9 month old baby. She’s fab, great with kids, lovely, I have no concerns.

I would estimate her BMI is 50-60 and my husband noticed that it is a struggle for her to get up and down off the floor and he is worried that if baby was in danger she may struggle.

So what would you do? Do you think that weight could impact a job like this? I’m sure people of this weight have their own children and are safe to look after them?

YABU - morbid obesity could impact her ability to do this job

YANBU - she’ll be fine

Splits not splints. 🙄

Wow that is good to hear. If you walk 5m a day and don't overeat how are you morbidly obese though? Genuine question I'm not being goady.

It is good to hear that you don't have health problems but it may well be a case of 'yet' as morbidly obese people are at much higher risk. Anyway, best wishes.

No clue, my Dr thinks it's probably hormonal. I eat way less and way healthier than most people I know, but here we are i'm a fat fuck, I am also 4foot 10 so that doesn't help.
I'm 45 this month and i'm still good. I mean I have lifelong asthma, lung nodules, endometriosis and anaemia, but none of those are because of my weight.

I am in awe, I am average weight and cant do the splints.
Mind you, I couldn't when I was 18 and as fit as a fiddle....so good for you.😀

Haha thanks. I did ballet as a child and yoga as an adult and it helps that i'm double jointed. I can no longer kick my leg up to my head anymore though, sad times😂.

You absolutely can get that way from medication Hmm

Steroids are one, anti-depressants are another. There's also medication for migraines, seizures, hormone disorders and many more.

People don't like to think weight gain can be affected by anything other than food, though - I guess it's easier to feel morally superior that way.

Don't be so deluded. Steroids do not make you morbidly obese. Do you understand exactly how overweight that is?

I can not eat much or I get very fat. I am overweight. I just have to accept that I can not eat much. It sucks, but it is what it is.

UbiquitousObjects · 01/02/2025 19:01

I suspect that most morbidly obese people are like me rather than the things people believe obese people are like

And I suspect you're a troll 😂

Do you REALLY think that most morbidly obese people are eating 2000 calories a day, walking 5 miles a day, have no health issues and are so mobile they can do the splits? Come on now.

cunoyerjudowel · 01/02/2025 19:04

I think people need to take a breath and get this into perspective.

The thread is about would you hire a nanny as described.

I think many people are taking it personally- interpreting the reasons why the posters would not hire a nanny as to why they themselves (probably parents) are viewed as unfit to fulfil the role. This is not the case.

When you hire someone to do something you have a choice of applicants and with the care of your child you want to get the absolute safest bet.

I do accept that I am not unhappy with my life or the way I look. I am unhappy that other people see and judge me for being overweight though!

No, but I am saying that a lot of morbidly obese people are more than capable of being fit for the job of a nanny. I am also saying that a lot of morbidly obese people do not just sit on their arse all day eating takeaways, which is what most people believe! I am also saying that people love an excuse to fat bash!

If you Google endometriosis asthma and even aneamia they are all associated with obesity. Also pulmonary nodules. Sorry, I'm not trying to attack you I just think you should be aware.

Not sure your Dr is being helpful suggesting it is hormone related. Have you considered ozempic?

Oh come now. My dd has Addisons (steroids), depression and anxiety (SSRI's), heavy periods and related mood disorder (various contraceptive related methods). She is 5'4" and 9st. She takes care with her diet and exercises.

Being morbidly obese isn't like gaining half a stone over Christmas. It takes sustained overeating for a significant period of time.

If you're morbidly obese, you're eating too much. Maybe not takeaways. But definitely too much. Far too much.

Catterpillarsflipflops · 01/02/2025 19:16

I withdrew my child from an otherwise good nursery as her key worker was too overweight to safely look after her. A few times she came home in a change of clothes as she had got in the sand out/ fallen in a puddle faster than nursery worker could get there. Finsl straw was my little girl falling down some steps as nursery worker couldn't keep up with her.

We also found thar she quote often sat cuddling her instead of doing things and our daughter was steadily becoming more sedentary.

Edited ti say in response to "can't help it" comments. I have 3 kids under 3, endometriosis, adenomyosis & I'm on sertraline.

I get up at 5:30 ÷(every day to exercise and watch what I eat. I'm 9st 2lb.

AndOnAndOn1000 · 01/02/2025 19:17

No I definitely wouldn't. To me it would be an accident waiting to happen, and when your baby gets older, it would be even worse, because you've got to be very agile/quick when you're running after a one/two year old.

That’s heartbreaking 💔 especially the part about your daughter also becoming sedentary 😔😔😔

Well considering i've had asthma since birth and menstrual issues since the age of 11 I don't think that is the case here, also the anaemia is due to the heavy bleeding from the menstrual issues. No every Dr was less than helpful on every issue i've ever had to be honest, but no I couldn't afford it and I don't think the Dr would refer me for it, plus the side effects put me right off. However I can see how effective it is as one of my inlaws has been on mounjaro and she has lost loads!

Prone to ill health? You mean she is ignored by health professionals so doesn't get offered treatment in a timely manner as thin people do so has to go back time and time again before they relent?

Thin person here. That just isn't true. I get fobbed off by the NHS just as often as any other woman would, be she thin, fat or anything inbetween.

I eat 3meals a day and rarely snack, my fitness tracker is set on 1400 calories, to lose weight I suspect that I would have to eat around 800cals or less which is not sustainable. I am not looking for advice to lose weight neither am I saying that all morbidly obese people are all like me, I am just saying that it is unfair to judge overweight people and treat them like they deserve less than someone of a healthy weight!

You need to look far more closely at your diet. And you need to be honest with yourself.

If you were eating 1400 calories and walking 5 miles every day you would NOT have a BMI of 48.

You know that. I know that. So does everyone on the thread. And so does your Doctor which is most likely why they've waved you away with the 'probably hormonal' BS - because you can't help anyone lose weight when they're still in total denial about what they actually eat or do.

Right sure. I have been completely honest, I don't care whether you believe that or not. I get that people look at me and think I must be a complete pig, but I am not. I log every mouthful I eat, I should be losing weight, but i'm not. I'm not looking for a reason, i'm not unhappy with how I look, i'm middle aged now and I give zero fucks, my life is good.

You do realise there is a huge amount of research evidence pointing to complex interactions between genes, the microbiome and other physiological, psychological and environmental factors. Every individual is created different. People seem to want to confuse their good luck with moral worthiness - hubris.

Please show me an obese erson who has consumed less than 1100 calories for a sustained period

JoyousGreyOrca · 01/02/2025 19:55

@RosesAndHellebores I have to eat no more than 1400 calories a day to just stay overweight. That is not a lot of calories.
