Cost of a haircut

AIBU to think the cost of haircuts is crazy? A “cheap” haircut seems to be around £50-55 but lots of places charging £75+. I have such a bog standard haircut I just can’t justify these kind of prices for a trim.
updated to say I’m not begrudging salons charging their worth - they need to cover their backs obviously, they’re businesses and they are a trained profession etc. but I just don’t know how people afford to go every 8-12 weeks at these prices.

I paid £32 today at a local place for a cut and blow dry today. Done of the more local salons are cheaper and my cut is lovely.

SemperIdem · 31/01/2025 22:48

It is a lot more expensive than it used to be.

But I think hairdressing can itself be quite a costly profession to be in, a % of cost goes to the salon for having the space there, hair colouring courses etc and those costs will have also risen so the cost of the service has also had to rise.

Lovelysummerdays · 31/01/2025 22:50

Honestly I just cut my own hair, it’s collar bone length and has a bit of a wave so I get away with it. It is bonkers that blokes go to the barbers for a tenner but we have to pay £££ because??

XenoBitch · 31/01/2025 22:51

I was charged £27 a few years back, and that was just for a spray down and my split ends taken off.
I haven't bothered for a few years now. I find the whole experience horrid anyway.

BiddyPop · 31/01/2025 22:52

My hairdresser costs €99 for a cut.

But it's city centre. And more importantly, I have thick, unmanageable hair that needs a cut by someone who understands thick hair.

So I am happy to pay that having had years of bad cuts. In a lot of different salons. And for almost the same prices.

LoafofSellotape · 31/01/2025 22:52

£52 every 12 weeks, I don't think that's bad for the really good cut I get.

JaceLancs · 31/01/2025 22:52

I go every 6 weeks and pay £42 for a root touch up and trim
you need to shop around

Poppyseeds79 · 31/01/2025 22:53

Look out for salons offering appointments with their apprentices. It'll take a bit longer, but much cheaper and a stylist will check it over. Also if there's a training college near you they'll do low price colours/cuts.

Wowwellokthen · 31/01/2025 22:54

Cut and dye my own hair and haven't been to a hair dressers for almost 10 years. Don't think it looks too bad and don't have the money for it so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cricketsticks · 31/01/2025 22:54

Unsure why you would expect it to be cheaper? A haircut is on your head and constantly on show, surely you would want it to look its best and be to a professional standard.

Marine30 · 31/01/2025 22:55

If you live in a nice area try the towns around it that are slightly less desirable. The hairdresser probably won’t be much different in terms of expertise but their rents will be a lot lower so their prices will be too.

cardibach · 31/01/2025 22:57

Centre of Cardiff. £35 quid. Shop around a bit.

Slytherinnnnn · 31/01/2025 22:57

£85 here north of England. That’s my choice, my hairdresser is one of the more experienced members of staff at the salon I go to, he’s expensive and senior for a reason. He’s fantastic.

LillyPJ · 31/01/2025 22:58

It's ridiculous that they charge more for women than for men (even in the same salon). I even wrote to my MP a few years back, thinking it must be illegal, but got nowhere. I pay around £27 for a dry trim so I guess that's not too bad though.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 31/01/2025 22:58

My hairdresser charges £25 to cut my hair and my DH's.

And she comes to our house.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 31/01/2025 23:00

I pay £33 for a great cut & dry, takes her 40 - 45 mins for my short hair. But I think she books out an hour to allow for tidying workstation etc in between clients. I actually think that's a good price considering it includes any products she uses too when you consider all her fuel/ rent/
Product costs.

GottaShiftThesePounds · 31/01/2025 23:03

Ours is £15 dry cut.
£30 wash and cut
£35 wash cut dry.

PickAChew · 31/01/2025 23:08

Haircut today with the owner of a lovely independent Newcastle City centre salon. £53. Like a PP I have thick wavy hair with a mind of its own and I've kissed a lot of frogs in terms of people who can cut it well. She's great, the craic is good and the salon has wonderful reclining basins that are great for my neck.

Thirteenblackcat · 31/01/2025 23:17

I’m really fortunate that I’ve found a hairdresser who will do a cut and colour for £70

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 23:23

I paid £39 for my 11yo to get a haircut recently. However the hairdresser did layers, a proper style and deep conditioned it etc but still I did curl my toes a little

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 23:24

I also don’t want to even say what I pay for a cut and colour. But my hairdresser is a total genius, and I do think it’s worth it. Everywhere else cuts my hair too short and turns it orange for £60 less

motherofonegirl · 31/01/2025 23:25

£10 cut (no wash and blow dry) in the village next to mine, no appointment needed

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 31/01/2025 23:31

£55 for a cut & finish for me.
£35 for the same for my 10yo.
Has definitely gone up in recent years but I've been with the same hairdresser for over a decade now and not going to change.

JollyViper · 31/01/2025 23:34

£15 for my undercut (special price, because she's lovely and my hair grows so fast)

RaininSummer · 31/01/2025 23:34

I must be lucky with my hairdresser. Had a bit of a restyle yesterday and was only charged 22 pounds. This was a dry cut and took over 45 mins.
