Cost of a haircut

AIBU to think the cost of haircuts is crazy? A “cheap” haircut seems to be around £50-55 but lots of places charging £75+. I have such a bog standard haircut I just can’t justify these kind of prices for a trim.
updated to say I’m not begrudging salons charging their worth - they need to cover their backs obviously, they’re businesses and they are a trained profession etc. but I just don’t know how people afford to go every 8-12 weeks at these prices.

£18. Spray and cut. I go to hairdresser’s house.

DustyMaiden · 01/02/2025 20:24

I’ve just paid £156 cut and colour. It will need colouring again in 3 weeks.

I’ve been with my hairdresser for years and think he’s wonderful. He left the salon in my town and set up by himself 40mins drive away and I’ve followed him. Happy to do that rather than take a chance with someone else. My hair is fine and the cut is quite complex. I pay £50 for a cut and blow dry every 6 weeks or so. I have subtle highlights a couple of times a year which also cost about £60. He has been cutting DD’s hair since she was little and only charges £20 for a cut and blow dry for her even though she’s 11 now.

I pay £73 for a colour, cut and blow dry. I don't resent the cost at all, my hairdresser is highly skilled and deserves to be paid well for her work. There are so many rubbish hairdressers out there, I've been stung before and am pleased I've found someone who does a good job.

tedibear · 02/02/2025 11:48

I'm central Scotland but my town is quite expensive compared to other ones nearby which are a gd bit cheaper.

My local salon has got way too expensive. I was £53 last time for a cut and blow dry. It's gone up again, it's now £58 so I'm trying somewhere new next time. I'm not actually sure how much as it's from £35 for cut and blow dry so I'm hoping maybe about £40 as my hair is long.

I just get a few inches off and maybe a layer added, it's super easy. Sometimes I cut it myself if I can't be bothered going or just want to trim the ends.

I just don’t know how people afford to go every 8-12 weeks they can't

I can. It's £18.

Cakeandusername · 02/02/2025 11:54

£45 colour cut blow dry. I go to a tiny salon in a run down town rather than a fancy one locally which would be at least double the price.

AngryLikeHades · 02/02/2025 11:54

I go to colleges that have hair and beauty departments. They cut, dye hair etc. for a considerably cheaper price and there is a member of staff/a teacher on hand when important decisions are made. You can even choose the grade and experience of the college student if you pay a bit more.
I have a cut and blow dry for £7-9 usually.
I haven't paid for blonde highlights that I might have next.

Astrak · 04/02/2025 21:32

I have my hair cut every eight weeks at the local salon. £25 and I add on a £5 tip. My stylist trained at Vidal Sassoon and she's really good.
In London, it was £80, and in a local village £50, and that was before the tip.

MidnightMeltdown · 04/02/2025 21:51

I pay £60 for a cut, but I book the most expensive person in the salon. You can get a basic stylist for around £40 if you're not too fussy.

PixiePonies · 04/02/2025 21:53

Mine is £15 for a dry cut, £10 for the same for each child.

Londonrach1 · 04/02/2025 21:55

Wow where are you all...I paid £15 last time for a wet cut which I thought was expensive and normally paid £10. Very happy and pleased with the cut. Can't see why you pay more than £20 ever but this is a wet cut and nothing else done.

Londonrach1 · 04/02/2025 21:55

Posting issue...posted twice for some reason..
Maybe shocked re price of hair cuts...

ThisFluentBiscuit · 17/03/2025 21:05

You can't get a cut and blow dry for under 100 pounds in my fancy south-east town, but I go a few miles out where the prices are more like 45-60 pounds depending on who you have. The less fancy salons also do dry cuts, which the expensive ones in the expensive towns don't seem to offer. 100 pounds for a cut and blow dry in London and the south-east is pretty standard, but I think it's very expensive, unless it's in central London.

slowlydecaying · 11/06/2025 10:53

I have a dry cut £12 as I have vertigo and cannot have it washed

Whereissummer24 · 11/06/2025 11:04

My hairdresser was 60 for a cut - I have a single length bob and it takes maybe 20 mins. The colour is about 180. I can’t justify the cost of the cut any more so a friend who trained as a hairdresser does it for a bottle of wine! I still get the colour done twice a year as it’s great!

sl0th · 11/06/2025 12:40

My hairdresser works from home, £25 for a dry cut and she gets it right every time!

Chickenstewie · 11/06/2025 12:42

I pay £9.50. Spray with water and trim, in a hairdresser on my street.

Zanzara · 11/06/2025 12:46

I've been cutting my own hair for the last 47 years, and I do DH's ever since Covid.

Every time I finish I shout Ker-ching! in a pointed manner, but he's not caught on yet. 😉. Given some of these prices I'll have to redouble my efforts.

AlpineMuesli · 11/06/2025 12:53

Standard cut
2023 it was £63
2024 £77
2025 £88

GasPanic · 11/06/2025 12:54

I've thought about this before.

I think its because styling longer hair generally requires more skill. Plus there is a greater range of styles and treatments and therefore skill/training equipment needed.

You also have the "impact of getting it wrong". If you get a mans haircut wrong most of the time he will grunt and say it will grow back. A considerable amount of mens haircuts are "do it shorter with the clippers". Whereas with womens haircuts it could have much more consequential impact on your hairdressing business if it is done wrong, and the time it might take to grow out if long hair is cut poorly.

I think a lot of people go to a preferred hairdresser because they like the way they make their hair look. This indicates variation of skill and that indicates demand and therefore pricing differential.

A final point I would make is that men who want complex styling (for men) often pay high prices for haircuts too. Probably the lacking option for women is when a woman wants a simple cut with no high skill treatment at low cost that option is often not available.

TheDearBlueDog · 08/10/2025 11:33

The cost of a haircut really depends on the style and the barber’s skill. A low cut taper haircut is a great choice if you want something clean and affordable.

needapokerface · 08/10/2025 11:41

I had my 1st haircut in 2 years, it was all booked on a website (arghhh ! ) and it had pictures and prices of the length of your hair, I have long hair so picked the one that was relevant all good I thought it was priced at £57.50 which I thought was a bit on the dear side but as i've not been in 2 years I thought it was fine.

Get to the Hairdressers, explain that I want 2 to 3 inches off my hair, a few layers added in, nothing fancy or complicated. Hairdresser then says as your hair is long I will be adding a £20 extra fee onto your price, so its now £77.50, was so glad I was sitting down as that price nearly floored me.

Agreed, paid and left, the worst part is no-one and I mean no-one has even noticed i've been to the hairdressers 😂

Shellyash · 08/10/2025 11:42

DH £11 which includes ears and nose... Me £40
