Cost of a haircut

AIBU to think the cost of haircuts is crazy? A “cheap” haircut seems to be around £50-55 but lots of places charging £75+. I have such a bog standard haircut I just can’t justify these kind of prices for a trim.
updated to say I’m not begrudging salons charging their worth - they need to cover their backs obviously, they’re businesses and they are a trained profession etc. but I just don’t know how people afford to go every 8-12 weeks at these prices.

Not unreasonable at all, it drives me mad that I'm charged £35 for essentially a gents haircut, it's shorter than my sons and I pay a tenner for his

People say it's because boys/men's cuts are done with clippers, clippers have never been near my sons hair yet it's still a tenner. His barber won't cut mine purely because I'm female.

I've been lucky to recently find a tiny unisex salon in a little village that charges me £14, rightly IMO for literally 10 minutes in the chair, won't be going back to the women's only salons again at almost 3x the price!

It’s the difference between men’s and women’s haircuts that feels really unfair. My son’s haircut was £11 recently for a restyle recently that took about 20 minutes; my daughter’s was £25 to have about 2cm dry trimmed off the ends in 5 minutes, at the hairdresser that’s part of the same business as the barber.

Pink tax. Could you take her to the barber? It would be hard for them to refuse as their prices are clear and you aren’t asking for a particular style.

Dry cut walk in is £18 here. I was there for 50 minutes for a restyle (female)

Waitingfordoggo · 01/02/2025 12:06

I haven't had my hair cut or dyed for about a year for this reason. Just can't justify the cost- too many other bills to pay! My hair probably looks terrible but I've stopped noticing/caring.

WhatWasPromised · 01/02/2025 12:12

Wash, cut, blow dry costs me £75 every 6-8 weeks but mines short so it takes upkeep.

Thats with the most senior stylist in the salon, there are others who are cheaper about £40.

Its worth every penny for me.

AuntieMarys · 01/02/2025 12:20

I pay £80 regrowth and cut every 5 weeks. Worth every penny

Boomer55 · 01/02/2025 12:23

£150 for cut and colour. But it is in an expensive area, and it’s a very good hairdressers. 👍

Charltonstrek · 01/02/2025 12:40

I pay £15 for a dry cut just the ends

SunnieShine · 01/02/2025 12:47

Notmanyleftnow · 01/02/2025 12:57

It costs £20 on average where I live.

MajorCarolDanvers · 01/02/2025 13:00

I pay £49.

my hair is curly and I don’t need to or want to colour it so I only get it cut a few times a year.

Willoo · 01/02/2025 13:01

My cut is £33 but I always round it to £40

midnightblackcat · 01/02/2025 13:02

GottaShiftThesePounds · 31/01/2025 23:03

Ours is £15 dry cut.
£30 wash and cut
£35 wash cut dry.

Where do you live? £15 is a bargain!

Yes - the company is important too. I've not returned to some places because I've not enjoyed the chat.

Leafstamp · 01/02/2025 19:47

I think it depends where in the country you are and what kind of place you go to.

Have you considered having a mobile hairdresser to your home? They are cheaper.

Or looking into salons in a cheaper part of the area you live in. Eg a relative lives about 45 mins from me but lots of things are is cheaper there than where I am.

Mine's the same

She charged about £50 for stripping my hair of old dye, trimming the ends and putting new mixed colour in. She won't accept more, I do try to tip her because her skills, expertise and time is worth more but she doesn't take it

Ribenaberry12 · 01/02/2025 20:05

I’ve started going to a walk in salon. I always ask for a dry cut. Costs me £25 for trim and layers. I can’t be arsed with anything more tbh, I go after work and just want to be in and out.

Look out for salons offering appointments with their apprentices. It'll take a bit longer, but much cheaper and a stylist will check it over. Also if there's a training college near you they'll do low price colours/cuts.

I work at a FE college and have had my hair foiled toner and cut for between £18-25 .
They are very closely supervised and have to keep details of colours etc. I can honestly say that they are better than my previous hairdresser who always liked to cut too much off. It does take a little more time but not significantly so. They only offer certain days/evenings as the apprentices are in their salon work places the rest of the time. They use professional products, the salons are immaculate and they are enthusiastic. Highly recommend.

BendingSpoons · 01/02/2025 20:09

Last year I paid £25 for a wet cut. I have just paid £10 for a cut and blow-dry at the local college. Downside is it took longer and they only do weekdays until 3pm.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 01/02/2025 20:18

£12 dry cut, which is clearly a win looking at this. Is a large salon with rented chairs. Can't book have to wait. No complaints at that price
