Imitating statues

I saw a photo with some two young girls imitating a statue they were standing next to. I know it's just a bit of fun but could this be seen as disrespectful in some cases? For example, if the statue was a suffragette or someone else who did a lot of good.

What a non issue.

bridgetreilly · 31/01/2025 19:35

No.

No

Disrespectful to who? The statue? This is just trying to find offence where there is none.

I suppose to the person depicted in the statue. Not that I necessarily think it is, I'm undecided.

They are usually long dead. And their statue is usually there because of some good deed from their life. So some one imitating them is not a negative thing, surely/

PantoHorse · 31/01/2025 19:45

I suppose not, providing the person's deeds make an impression on them.

I’m sure it happens a lot.

Gymrabbit · 31/01/2025 19:47

I think in the vast majority of cases it’s absolutely fine. There are a few statues which are to commemorate horrific events. For example the statue of the children of Lidice. It wouldn’t be appropriate to mimic that.

Tisthedamnseason · 31/01/2025 19:47

I don't think so where a statue is to honour someone who has done something good.

If the statue is for victims of something (eg the statue of child victims of the Lidice massacre, or the Prague victims of communism) then yes I think that would be disrespectful to stand next to them and pose like they are stood.

Interesting that our minds went to the same statue. I’m pleased that people know about it. X

ThinWomansBrain · 31/01/2025 19:51

sounds an improvement to climbing on it - or using it as a picnic table

PantoHorse · 31/01/2025 19:52

I agree @Gymrabbit and @Tisthedamnseason , that would be bad.

I've got a photo of myself many years ago moping next to the Eleanor Rigby statue in Liverpool.

I hope I didn't offend all the lonely people.

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 31/01/2025 19:53

If it's a religious statue, some people would get very offended indeed; but if it's just a prominent and/or great person, probably not.

Or putting a traffic cone on its bonce!

CarliLove35 · 31/01/2025 19:55

I've got a photo of myself with John, Paul, George and Ringo in Liverpool - along with millions of others, I would imagine. It's a tribute, not offensive.

You don’t even want to know what people do to poor old Molly Malone.

This is probably more reflective of wide spread disrespect, sadly because this isn't restricted to statues....

Molly Malone. “The Tart with the Cart”.

Most statues spend their time being shat on by pigeons.

A couple kids mucking around next to them isn't going to make a difference.
