To use a washed-up raw meat knife

DP and I had a big dispute regarding a hygiene issue. As these happen regularly, I'd love to get a sense check from this esteemed audience.

I cut DD (10)'s bread roll with a kitchen knife. That knife was used to cut raw chicken on the day before and subsequently washed up and has been dry overnight.

The strongly expressed demand was that I immediately throw away the bread roll, and that this is "common sense".

YABU - Using a raw meat knife for directly eaten food is never acceptable, even if it has been washed up
YANBU - It's fine to use a raw meat knife as long as it has been washed up

By washed up you mean clean?

Ilovemyshed · 31/01/2025 19:33

If it was washed in hot soapy water and dried with a clean cloth its fine and even a food safety inspector would agree.

WhyArePiratesCalledPiratessss · 31/01/2025 19:33

How would you eat anything if you couldn't use stuff that had ever touched raw meat?? Washing is fine! Literally the point of washing up!

MistyF · 31/01/2025 19:33

YNBU
I'm with you. What does he think washing does besides making utensils clean?

Munchyseeds2 · 31/01/2025 19:34

We don't have special knives for anything

Schoolchoicesucks · 31/01/2025 19:34

It's been washed up. With detergent and hot water. So it's clean. That's fine.

bridgetreilly · 31/01/2025 19:34

Of course it’s fine! I don’t know anyone who has separate knives for raw meat, Not even in the professional kitchens I used to work in. A knife’s a knife,

XenoBitch · 31/01/2025 19:34

FFS, it has been cleaned. YANBU

LazJaz · 31/01/2025 19:35

Unless you keep kosher and have separate milky vs meaty kitchen utensils (and assuming that this was a bread roll to be eaten with butter etc) then I can’t see the issue

does he your DH suffer from anxiety?

WaltzingWaters · 31/01/2025 19:36

As long as it was washed in hot soapy water it’s fine. And bonkers to say otherwise!

PeppyGreenFinch · 31/01/2025 19:36

He’a an idiot. How does he think people without dishwashers survive without getting sick? Hot soapy water.

Tisthedamnseason · 31/01/2025 19:38

I have a pretty severe phobia of vomiting and can be very obsessive around contamination of things in the kitchen if raw meat is around. But this would not bother me at all (assuming you mean washed properly in hot soapy water).

Bonjovispyjamas · 31/01/2025 19:38

He's being weird.

CuppaDog · 31/01/2025 19:38

mashingwachine · 31/01/2025 19:33

By washed up you mean clean?

Yes, washed in hot soapy water and air dried

By that logic you’d have to throw away anything that was washed up in the same water surely.
So you’d only ever have single use cutlery, assuming you use a dishwasher or wash up everything at the same time.
How does that work for putting away clean stuff, does the meat knife live in separate drawer??

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 31/01/2025 19:39

We use the same knife for everything.

Icanttakethisanymore · 31/01/2025 19:40

What’s the point of washing stuff if it doesn’t make it clean? What does he suggest? You have a ‘raw meat’ set of knives only to be used for raw meat?

KeyWorker · 31/01/2025 19:41

Is this this the first time in 10 (+?) years you’ve prepared food together? Does he think you keep separate raw meat knives?

XenoBitch · 31/01/2025 19:44

On here, I saw a comment about having separate washing machines for tea towels and knickers... so I would not be surprised.

purplecorkheart · 31/01/2025 19:45

If it was properly washed as in hot water and washing liquid and not run under the tap, I don't see his issue. What is his logic?

NeedingCoffee · 31/01/2025 19:47

FS, when we go camping etc I take one sharp knife. It's used for everything!!

Pinkissmart · 31/01/2025 19:49

Does he do any of the washing up?

What he is suggesting is such an extreme case of lack of common sense. I’m so interested to know why he thinks he is right.

Is he one of those weirdos that thinks only dishwashers get things really clean?

whirlyhead · 31/01/2025 19:50

We just have knives. They get used for everything. There are no designated meat knives and I’m a vegetarian who could care less if I’m using a knife that’s been used to cut up raw meat at some time in its life. Life is too short for such daft conversations and opinions.

JollyViper · 31/01/2025 19:53

How long have you been together? How is this the first time he has decided this is a "thing"? Does he randomly throw knives out that he's used? Does he not understand how washing up works? So many questions?!

Strictlymad · 31/01/2025 19:54

How do meat knives and eating knives share a drawer? Does he have two sets of equipment one for raw one for eating? This is bonkers- why bother washing up at all if it’s still contaminated?! Seriously though does he have ocd? This is quite extreme behaviour
