To use a washed-up raw meat knife

DP and I had a big dispute regarding a hygiene issue. As these happen regularly, I'd love to get a sense check from this esteemed audience.

I cut DD (10)'s bread roll with a kitchen knife. That knife was used to cut raw chicken on the day before and subsequently washed up and has been dry overnight.

The strongly expressed demand was that I immediately throw away the bread roll, and that this is "common sense".

YABU - Using a raw meat knife for directly eaten food is never acceptable, even if it has been washed up
YANBU - It's fine to use a raw meat knife as long as it has been washed up

Raw meat KNIFE. I don't splash raw meat under the tap.

That reminds me of the washing chicken before cooking to clean it thread. The OP took a lot of convincing that spaying the possible bacterial round the kitchen wasn't safe and that chicken doesn't need to be washed before cooking.

Thanks for all the reassurances so far!

There is also a cultural dimension to this question. DP is Chinese where apparently the need for strict and full separation of raw meat and other utensils is taught from childhood.

I'm Chinese, this isn't a cultural thing. My mum uses one cleaver for everything, washes it in between raw meat and non-meat chopping. I usually use one knife and do all veg/cooked before using the same one for meat. Sometimes I use multiple knives for meat/non-meat but that's 100% laziness of not wanting to wash up a knife (yes yes I know it means washing up more knives after I've finished cooking)

I wouldn't use wooden chopping boards for meat - well in the days I dealt with meat that is.
I would keep separate boards for meat too.
But realise that's not the question.
Why do you think no one has confirmed the cultural difference your DH said about being Chinese? Did he make it up do you think ?

I don’t think the “meat knife” rule is cultural. In my experience the far east is far more “one cleaver to do everything”

This is my kitchen anyways 🤣 we have had the same knives for years and used for all kinds.. never got food poisoning in our home.

He’s clearly picked the wrong person to argue about proper knife use and care. Whilst seems slightly obsessive I do admire your dedication to the cause and I wish I had the same discipline.

Your husband obviously does not understand the concept of washing up and needs more practice.

Eh? Your DH is wrong. It's been washed?!

T1Dmama · 09/02/2025 13:30

My dogs are raw fed…
I use forks to dish up their meat… they are then washed in hot soapy water… same forks we use to eat…. I’ve been doing this for 10 years and am still very much still alive and well, no bouts of food poisoning!

sorry but who has separate knives for bread and meat.
