A&E Gift?

I wondered if this is ok to do from any medical staff on here, because of infection risk etc!

I went to A&E with my little son and the doctors and nurses were really helpful despite a jam packed unit and very few staff. Yes the wait was hours and hours but they really genuinely did their best. And although my son is still poorly (viral) they checked everything so hopefully he’ll be better soon!

I have to go back to the hospital to collect a prescription from the hospital pharmacy that they didn’t have yesterday. Do you think I’m allowed to go back to A&E and drop them off some chocolates or biscuits to say thank you? I’ve never seen anyone do it and I wonder if they can even accept it because of infection risks etc. I didn’t see any snacks lying around when we were there waiting!

I think it's a lovely idea, the staff don't get thanked enough. Or drop off some chocolates and people can grab one x

Absolutely not expected but always very much appreciated. You won't see any snacks lying around because we are like wild unfed animals in A+E. We normally politely wait for said relative to be out of eyeline then descend on said box of chocolates and demolish it within minutes. I'm sure they will be very grateful!

Thank you! I was trying to keep an eye out and didn’t see any snacks and didn’t want to go and then to tell me off that we aren’t allowed! Do you think maybe individually wrapped ones may be better? Like celebrations?

Yes you can. Chances are they will be delighted to receive a gift. Just bear in mind that they might be really busy when you go in. If there's a big queue it might be better to come back another day.

Box of biscuits or celebrations is ideal. We were actually having this debate over a box of roses yesterday and collectively decided celebrations were the top tier chocolate gift at work. Just the right size for a sugar boost and good for sharing out.

I have done it when my DS was in and out of A&E for a recurring issue. I did a small box with nice biscuits, chocolates, teabags, hot chocolate and coffee bags.

That’s very true but they have a triage system so to get into the actual a&E part there’s a locked door so perhaps I can knock on that?

Or - you can send a card or email to say thank you , if there was a particular member of staff , if you can name them ?
This all goes on their Appraisal .

Though chocolates are nice too

Hope your son is feeling better soon.

Thats a good idea. I wonder if they have an email. I remember the doctors name!

There is no more infection risk with some store box chockies than with stuff we normally bring to the office. It's perfectly fine.

Thank you. I was just wondering if staff could even have snacks/food around on A&E as I didn’t see any! But as a PP said they’re usually just eaten straight away!

You can do that but it's not like we get anything extra after the glowing appraisal. Snacks are way nicer.

I can guarantee you, even if we are busy, knocking on the triage door with some chocolates will be the best thing that happens all shift. Interrupt away 😆

Hellskitchen24 · 31/01/2025 13:54

It’s always massively appreciated. It’s also not an infection risk. If you put food down where I work, it’s like flies buzzing around a pile of shit, and it’s gone in about 30 seconds lol

Almahart · 31/01/2025 13:55

I've done this before and it was really appreciated

viques · 31/01/2025 13:57

That sounds a lovely ides, think about a card too , the chocolates/ biscuits won’t last longer than half a shift, but everyone will see the card!
