Might be worth reading the (rather hysterical) article properly:

"The pause will not effect the federal holidays for King's birthday or Juneteenth, the memo adds. "

Otherwise they are just not observing a load of pointless junk events:

Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday in January, Black History Month in February, Women's History Month in March, Holocaust Day/Days of Remembrance and Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, Pride and Juneteenth in June, Women's Equality Day in August, National Hispanic Heritage Month in September and October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October, and National American Indian Heritage Month in November.

How is that acceptable? These are important events!
And I did read it properly, thank you for your input. I was aware that they were not going to cancel the national holidays already in place.

And they ARE NOT pointless! 😡

I think the Defence Agency has bigger concerns such as their core mission of defence related stuff.

If people want to observe pointless events they can in their spare time, not on government paid time.

Quitelikeit · 30/01/2025 14:42

Some of these are whole months though?!

Macrodatarefiner · 30/01/2025 14:43

Haven't read it. People are sick of the woke stuff that was forced down everyone's throat. Now the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction? What did you think would happen. None of these dates are actually about what they claim to be about, they're perceived by many as nothing but empty sanctimonious posturing.

But, as I said, didn't read. I just thought I'd chuck my tuppence in for balance

Onlyonekenobe · 30/01/2025 14:44

I think your mistake is in hoping/assuming that Trump and his administration are seeking not to be seen as KKK supporters (remember "good people on both sides"?). They're happy to be open about their white supremacy. Believe what they're telling you. They're not joking or hinting or lying.

Mightymoog · 30/01/2025 14:46

ooh, I hope pride goes too .
And national Hispanic heritage Month/. For 2 months? What is the point of most of this garbage?

Hoppinggreen · 30/01/2025 14:46

Black History is "woke nonsense"?????

Yes as is 'Women's Equality Day' apparently.

Mind you I note it's just a day, not a month...

Not since it became a fetishfest, no

I am in now way Homophobic and used to go to Manchester Pride in the 90's, wouldn't go now though. Its very different and to be honest not my cuppa
I don't think its "woke nonsense" though

AlisonDonut · 30/01/2025 15:18

People just need to get on with their damn jobs. They are free to do what they want in their own time.

Ablondiebutagoody · 30/01/2025 15:34

Public bodies shouldn't be wasting time and effort "celebrating" this stuff. They should focus on their core objectives. So I'm with the Donald on this one.

I'm actually pretty impressed so far that he is moving quickly to honour his campaign commitments. Quite a contrast to Starmer in the UK.

I used to go lots, and took my dc too. That was until I went to one event and there were men dressed in puppy fetish gear running a ball pit tent for children.

To the (thankfully) very few Trump supporters on MN
Dotjones · 30/01/2025 15:44

I'm not a Trump "supporter" although I was anti-Harris. To me they're two sides of the same coin, a coin that's sitting at the bottom of a sewer. But that aside, I don't see anything particularly controversial about this move. They're just not wanting to spend money on things connected to these events, they're not banning the events taking place. People can still support them on their own time.

The article seems rather biased. Note the opening statement that "personnel were instructed to suspend observances of certain holidays that do not specifically honor white men." Then immediately follows with a list of such events, beginning with Holocaust Remembrance Day. Given that Jews are officially designated as caucasian/white by the US, surely this event honours plenty of white men. If they're arguing that it's being included because it also honours white women and children, I guess that's another point, but it would be odd for Trump to choose NOT to honour millions of white men, just because he wants to avoid honouring millions of white women too.

CaptainCaaaavemaan · 30/01/2025 15:49

I mean, Trump has said some mad stuff over the years but I can't get het up about this at all.

LolaPeony · 30/01/2025 15:52

This is really an entirely symbolic act - it’s just culture war signalling. It doesn’t matter.

What does it actually mean? My workplace ‘observes’ Black History Month - there are a few intranet articles and a couple of poorly attended lunch and learn sessions. Would anyone actually notice if it all went away? I’m not sure I would.

It’s quite odd that you think this is the thing that’s beyond the pale, and not the separation of families and attempts to suspend birthright citizenship.

FOJN · 30/01/2025 15:52

Looks like a case of malicious compliance at the DIA to me.

GildedRage · 30/01/2025 16:46

it's a pause, and only involves (based on the memo) the defense intelligence agency so the military will no longer provide support at certain events.
he has a massive debt and needs to balance the books.
he's not stopping any individual or individual workplace from celebrating any specific holidays that they choose.

GeneralPeter · 30/01/2025 17:02

Who is the KKK Grand Wizard? I'm aware of quite a few KKK leaders prominent in US politics historically (roughly equally split between the parties) but none recently.
