Parents need to stop lying about term time holidays

1000 replies

Ljcrow · 30/01/2025 08:00

If parents want to take their kids out of school for a term time holiday because it's cheaper, I wish they wouldn't give the bullshit that it's an "educational experience". There's an article about this on the BBC today, but working in a school I've heard it all before. Can we not pretend that an all-inclusive to Lanzarote or similar is a rich cultural and educational experience?! If you want to take your kids our because it's cheaper that's up to you but don't try claim the moral high ground, no one's falling for it. (Fwiw I think holiday companies shouldn't be allowed to hike their prices up in school holidays, it's disgraceful, and as a parent myself I have no choice but to pay those inflated prices. It sucks.)

No, I'm just calling out bullshit.
We couldn't afford to go abroad last year, we can't this year. Maybe don't assume you know my situation.

You aren’t calling out nothing. You are just judging.

I wish we could afford a villa in Tuscany! I can assure you we can't.

interesting.

Your go to is a Villa in a nice place. Meaning you can afford maybe less nice but still afford something nice?

So are you just online to slag off people with less means than you??

oh. But you refuse to say what is your job :)

🤷🏼‍♀️🤯🫣

laraitopbanana · 01/02/2025 21:10

@Ljcrow is just an obvious scam.

All the best! (Hopefully you do get it ;) )

whippy1981 · 01/02/2025 21:14

Wonder if such parents feel the same if their child's teacher said I am entitled to family time and took their holiday when school was happening!

I was responding to a poster who specifically mentioned a villa in Tuscany. You really need to read properly before commenting.

'Such' parents, and I am one, hear daily about the constant stream of supply teachers and cover supervisors and look at the unmarked books so probably wouldn't notice a difference.

As I've said before, once state schools start playing the game, then 'such parents' will too.

I'd expect some sort of cover - supply teacher, but it wouldn't bother me.

The issue is we have an over stuffed National Curriculum. If a child can't afford to miss a week of school (which is so blooming common due to illness etc) then there is too much being expected. Primary should be about learning the foundations and learning to love learning. If Scotland can manage to let their kids have term time holidays why can't we?!

Unmarked books isn't an issue at all. Why would it be? No mark marking is more effective.

Once parents understand that parents do not get involved in kids taking time off school then they might wind their necks in! But some will still not understand.

Laurmolonlabe · 01/02/2025 22:02

The schools don't judge you- the law judges you, the schools merely administrate it.
The Education Acts require your children to be educated , if you choose to send them to a state funded school that requires you to abide by the law on not taking your children out of school without a good reason-saving money on a holiday is not a good reason.
Should you find this oppressive you are within your rights to educate them at home, which would allow you to take them on holiday whenever you like- but you can't take advantage of state funded schools and do so- you very much want your cake and eat it too.

No cover - you are expected to do the filling in - that is how it works isn't it?

If they miss reading the text and miss the building blocks for that week's lessons - are you the parent about to fill those gaps or expect SEN kids to go without intervention so your child can have extra time to fill in the gaps? Is that ok?

This! They think teachers are sitting there policing things when the reality is they do the register and that is it! It is needing someone to blame for the consequences.

Because thats going so well for Scottish students

We take our kids out of school for holidays, don't lie, don't say it's for cultural stuff.
They'll miss one day this Easter as we're off to Japan. 1 day off school saves us about a grand. No brainer.

Because you didn't make any sense. I said you were welcome to not comment, your reply to that said you had commented. I don't know if English is your second language, but it's certainly coming across that way.

Is that you using someone's nationality as a way to shame them? Lovely.

CharlotteCChapel · 01/02/2025 23:00

We took our children out of school before it wasn't allowed. We went to the Greek islands, we visited archaeological sites, museums went for bust trips around the island. All three are still interested in Greek history and mythology.

We all cook Greek food at our homes so still benefit from those holidays.

Not everyone goes to AI resorts and lounge around the pool for a fortnight.

Thebigdigs · 01/02/2025 23:00

I think the fine should go towards providing extra support to the child who has missed out.

I would actually. My child could survive with a supply teacher for two weeks.

To be honest unless you had children in both educational systems you can’t judge ! I don’t care what your statistic says schools in Scotland are way better than in England , in fact I wouldn’t even thing the systems are interlinked and I had 2 of my kids in both . My kids do so much more for n a much friendlier way up here . There is simply no comparison

Thebigdigs · 01/02/2025 23:38

whippy1981 · 01/02/2025 23:26

The parent should do that.

So you leave the responsibility for educating the child to the parents - feckless parents taking their kids out of school during term time don’t care enough about educating their kids - should their kids suffer? Surely if the state are going to fine parents for taking their kids out of school the fine should to used to support the kids. What do you suggest the money raised should go to instead?

I didn't say no teacher though. We would be talking two weeks. I work in a role with safeguarding and I'm able to take two weeks off.
