Anyone else not enjoy the season change to Spring?

Soniastrumpet1984 · 30/01/2025 07:34

I know this is an unusual one but I get seasonal affective disorder for spring not autumn.
In my neck of the woods, there are little signs of spring coming, and it makes me feel very low. Once it's here I get used to it and like it, and I enjoy summer but its the change that upsets me. Anyone else?

Also if you enjoy certain aspects of the season it can be a focus on the fact it’ll be a whole year until you enjoy them again - rather than looking forward to what the next season allows you to do. I myself need to focus more on this positive aspect - it’s very likely a mindset and half-full/half-empty syndrome. Also nostalgia, reticence of letting go and fear of the future perhaps 🤷🏼‍♀️

We measure out our lives in coffee spoons? 😁

I think of this when I roll the bottoms of my jeans up, and walk out onto the grass when the summer kicks in.

Then I get bites, and roll them back down and put socks back on.

KimberleyClark · 30/01/2025 08:30

I love spring. What irrationally annoys me is that when as soon as there’s a hint of warmth in the spring sunshine people strip off and start acting like it’s summer!

NotISaidTheCat · 30/01/2025 08:30

To answer the question, I really like winter - we're up north and the hard, frosty mornings are gorgeous, plus I love the quality of the sunlight in the wintertime (when the sun deigns to make an appearance). So I'm a little sad when winter is over with, but it's nice when the days start getting longer. Could do without all the mud in the springtime, though, and the corresponding muddy paws of my dog!

This feels like a true Profrock moment. Kudos on living the poetic dream!

I find spring frustrating because I'm impatient. It keeps tantalising me with the promise of better weather but when you go outside it's still basically cold, and so unsettled that you're liable to be rained on at any random point. Weather doesn't actually get pleasurable until the summer.

DappledThings · 30/01/2025 08:33

I don't like it because it reminds me another winter is coming to an end with no snow. Not seen any proper stuff for 4 years now.

Where are you living? I see no signs of spring and I'm on the edge of London. Maybe too desperate. I have a hyacinth in my kitchen which just bloomed and smells lovely, but that's about it.

I’m also just outside London, one of the camellias is in bloom, and snow drops and daffodils starting to come through, and I can see buds on the trees.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 30/01/2025 08:36

I understand OP. I feel like that about summer. Absolutely loathe it. And sometimes we don't get a 'proper' spring, and suddenly hot days happen, which are awful 😔

It's not quite the same as the usual SAD, which I think is about light levels. But it's definitely a 'thing'. And not well understood.

neverthelastone · 30/01/2025 08:46

Oh god I love spring - my favourite season! But Feb/early March is a bit of a weird time, so I get what you mean.

Catza · 30/01/2025 08:53

I've experienced it when I lived in Northern Europe. "Seasonal vitamin deficiency" is the colloquial name for it there. Granted, we have about 3h of daylight throughout winter so there is probably some truth in that. Personally, I take a week off somewhere sunny at the end of Feb every year and it sorts me right out. Typically, on day two my sleep is completely regulated, by day three my mood and energy levels are up. Have you considered taking vit D throughout winter?

PutYourSpecsOnJean · 30/01/2025 08:53

Just wondering if your feelings about spring might have associations to something that happened in the past? There is something about the type of light in February/March that takes me straight back to a time when I was very ill. It's been 20 years now but every year I feel upset and out of sorts for those few weeks and it's definitely connected to looking outside and seeing the sky

Soniastrumpet1984 · 30/01/2025 08:58

I can't get hold of it really. I like the summer when it is here, it's not about hating the heat. No negative associations wither. It's just a sense of disquiet. Maybe about the expansion of light.

I love when you can feel spring approaching. I have found myself more and more in hibernation mode during winters.

Cityzen74 · 30/01/2025 09:04

Yes I find the season change to Spring the hardest. I can cope in the Summer because I know Autumn is coming but I do find Spring difficult. Most people don't really understand this and think I am being a bit miserable so it's good to hear I am not alone Flowers

I grow old, I grow old.
I shall wear my crocs with socks.

Whyareyousoannoying · 30/01/2025 09:33

I know what you mean. I'm not a huge fan of Spring but I'm not really sure why.

I think it's because it's quite unpredictable weather so can often feel like you're waiting for Summer to arrive, which can then often be a washout.

At least with Autumn and Winter you know where you stand.

I'm looking forward to the lighter nights.

musicmum75 · 30/01/2025 09:37

I have this too, and have only ever met one other person who felt the same way. I only feel this way with the transition from winter to spring, not at any other time of the year.

I think for me it's because I actually quite like hibernating and being cosy and the lighter days puts pressure on me to be more active and productive.

Splendid. I'm off now to go listen to the mermaids, who I do not think will sing to me.

(And I'm annoyed that I misspelled Prufrock, which is also a Prufrock moment!)

Errors · 30/01/2025 09:41

No, I enjoy spring coming. If anything, I find Feb and early March more difficult because I feel like it’s not happening quick enough!

The day the clocks change again is one of my favourites. Also love the changing of the seasons at other times - I get to wear different clothes and embrace whatever that season brings - Autumn walks, cosy winters, pub beer gardens in the summer etc

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 30/01/2025 09:47

I really love seeing the signs of spring.

I’m not invalidating your point of view, as it’s how you feel, but I wonder why? It’s an unusual way to feel. Humans need light and warmth so it feels like the opposite of answering a biological need.

I feel a bit like this too. I love the spring and summer but the transition from winter to spring feels so drawn out. I'm noticing the signs of it on the way but it's still January and we probably won't have pleasant weather until May. At least the winter is reliably cold, damp and miserable!

ItGhoul · 30/01/2025 10:11

I really dislike spring. March and April are my most hated months. I get very miserable when the clocks go forward - I know most people love the longer daylight hours but I much prefer my evenings dark.

I'm much like you too. Autumn is my favourite.
