Neighbour has an opinion on where I put my bins

We live in on a very quiet cul de sac. The homes have large front gardens and small drive ways. Almost identical to photo attached (not my street just an illustration of our set up). Houses also have a side yard/paved side garden where people keep their bins.

Well I have decided I will keep my bins in front of my garage at the front. We have a dog who gets let out throughout the day. I have a lot of anxiety around my dog being let out as I am not always convinced the side gate is left shut. It gets opened when it is bin day. Every time I let the dog out I have to check to see if gate is close and when I see someone else letting the dog out I shout at them to check. It’s just unnecessary chaos. Ideally I will just put a padlock on the side gate so teens don’t mess up by leaving it open. We live 3 turns away from a somewhat busy b road.

Anyway, a neighbour has since come around and said please can I put the bins back into the side garden as it is unsightly. Granted I am the only person on the cul de sac with them out. But who cares??

I am not the arsehole, right?

edit: whoops looks like I took out voting somehow

It's one thing to think "bins at the front don't look great" - fair enough, they don't.

It's another thing entirely to actually have the brass neck to tell another adult what to do in their own property. Who put them in charge?

I am petty AF so I would be refusing to move the bins on principle because that kind of busybody behaviour needs to be challenged.

MsVi · 29/01/2025 19:02

If the bins are in front of the garage don't you have to move them every time you get the car out? That sounds like hard work. Wouldn't it be easier to give your son a different chore, take the bins out yourself and keep the gate locked?

vandel · 29/01/2025 19:02

What's needed are big communal bins like they have in Spain and France. No personal bins anywhere. It works a treat there and I can't understand why this is not adopted in UK. NIMBYism as to the siting of the communal bins I suppose, but there doesn't seem to be a problem in other countries.

As for OP, if I were her, I wouldn't like the bins in the front simply because there are plenty of alternatives, but OP seems to have a multitude of excuses not to try them.

FuckMeUpFlorida · 29/01/2025 19:04

I don't think I could get worked up about this.

You do you OP.

SnidelyWhiplash · 29/01/2025 19:07

The building regulations now specify that bin storage areas have to be provided for new dwellings, which is a good thing.

I’d explain nicely but very firmly that where I put my bins would be my decision. I’d let you know that you bothered me and your thoughts were negatively impacting on me. So don’t worry.

I find it strange that you take pride in such utter selfishness!

LolaPeony · 29/01/2025 18:47

Personally, I would want to know if something I was doing was having a negative impact on my neighbours, and I would hope they would feel able to raise it with me. Your ‘busybody’ is in my view, a person who cares about where they live and those around them.

i'd want to know too.....so I can point and laugh.

Most people don't put a car in the garage mine doesn't even fit. OP I would buy a bin store so you all don't have to look at them

AlannaOfTrebond · 29/01/2025 19:21

I wouldn't say anything to you, but I would inwardly judge.

Where I live there are streets and streets of victorian terraces with nowhere to keep the bins except for at the front and it looks awful. I would love to have somewhere to keep the bins out of sight.

In front of the garage door also seems like the messiest place to put them, like they've just been dumped there. A bin store at the side of the drive would at least look tidy and intentional.

SnoopysHoose · 29/01/2025 19:44

Heavy duty gate spring lock is what you need and a bolt on inside of gate and train the teenagers to keep their keys on them or get a keysafe near front door

Fluffyyellowball · 29/01/2025 19:51

We have a similar style set up. Our bins are down the side behind a locked gate. One bin day they get put out and the gate locked again. When it's emptied it gets brought back down the side and the gate locked behind us again. It takes 5 minutes.
I wouldn't say anything to you about bins on your drive but I would think it was a bit scruffy and you weren't too bothered about how your home looked.

gruberandassocs · 29/01/2025 19:58

There is an argument for single stream recycling being cheaper and more effective than having individual households with multiple bins. Used by other countries and rubbish collected in one bin every week. Derailing but when I grew up we had one smallish bin for a household of 6, just too much packaging now 3 wheelies for a house hold of 3.

HeddaGarbled · 29/01/2025 20:01

I’m on your neighbour’s side.

Crazycatlady79 · 29/01/2025 20:04

Padlock your gate if it's causing you consternation.
I agree with your neighbour about it looking shit, but I think they're being bloody rude for having said something to you.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 29/01/2025 20:41

Am I the only one who thinks you just need to train your forgetful son better?

Can’t remember keys
Can’t be trusted to shut a gate

While you’re at it train the dog to stay in the yard.

Seagullsandclouds · 29/01/2025 20:45

It’s your choice, but it is very antisocial. A lot of places have covenants about things like that precisely because it’s annoying to others.

“A lot” of places really don’t 😂 that’s extremely rare in the uk.

Those covenants were written long before the advent of a plethora of bins.

Iamoldandwearpurple · 29/01/2025 20:56

I live in a terrace with a small front yard. It is a pita to drag the bins round and whilst I am not disabled enough to warrant the bin men collecting the bins from the back yard I cannot move them when they are heavy.

Mine also live out the front.

One neighbour moaned. I ignored and 6 years on they are still on the front yard.

Bonus being random toss their dog poo bags into my black bin as they pass. Fine by me, better than leaving them in the street. I see it as offering a community service of sorts

No they don’t, some newer builds perhaps. But nothing over 20 years old on average.

justasking111 · 29/01/2025 21:00

We have to store

One black wheelie bin for refuse

One brown wheelie bin for garden stuff

One three box trolley block for paper - tin and plastic - glass

One large box for food waste

One large bag for cardboard.

Pink plastic for textiles

Black plastic for electrical items

If you're a mid terrace cottage, it's a job and a half.

why is it selfish? Surely you’re the selfish one expecting me to dance to your tune….nope!

Avert your eyes from my property please!
