Neighbour has an opinion on where I put my bins

We live in on a very quiet cul de sac. The homes have large front gardens and small drive ways. Almost identical to photo attached (not my street just an illustration of our set up). Houses also have a side yard/paved side garden where people keep their bins.

Well I have decided I will keep my bins in front of my garage at the front. We have a dog who gets let out throughout the day. I have a lot of anxiety around my dog being let out as I am not always convinced the side gate is left shut. It gets opened when it is bin day. Every time I let the dog out I have to check to see if gate is close and when I see someone else letting the dog out I shout at them to check. It’s just unnecessary chaos. Ideally I will just put a padlock on the side gate so teens don’t mess up by leaving it open. We live 3 turns away from a somewhat busy b road.

Anyway, a neighbour has since come around and said please can I put the bins back into the side garden as it is unsightly. Granted I am the only person on the cul de sac with them out. But who cares??

I am not the arsehole, right?

edit: whoops looks like I took out voting somehow

If I knew how much it irritated my neighbours that I kept the bins in the front of the house I’d certainly be leaving them there! Pretty village or not such interfering is madness!

I live in a pretty village and it drives me nuts that every lovely cottage has three bins dumped out the front. I go to the effort of putting mine tidily away, but apparently its no business of mine to get annoyed that other people don't take pride in their area too. It doesn't take much for an area to look pretty and smart.

They are bins not rusting cars or discarded freezers. You are very priviliged for something so mundane to drive you nuts.

People who live in flats around here have 6 massive bins outside.

You're right it is none of your business.

theemmadilemma · 29/01/2025 15:43

Just put the padlock on and put the bins out once a week?

Our gates have yale bolts to stop people opening them and letting out our dogs. But the bins are kept behind them and we put them out once a week. It's a 5 min job each way?

The side gate does get used probably more than just when the bins get put out. Sometimes the kids will come in through the back door if they forget their keys it’s not often but it does happen. I just want to padlock it up for peace of mind.

Could you put the bin in the side, lock the gate. Get a keysafe and put it at the front of the house so the kids can use that if they forget their keys.

Completely agree

what is pretty is down to personal frame of reference and that you want what you frame as pretty over what someone else views as practical

Opink · 29/01/2025 15:49

We do live in a nice part of town where people care about their front gardens. But it’s hardly chocolate box cute.

We have a closer on our gate so don't need to lock. We've put a key safe tucked away at the front incase anyone loses forgets the front door key.

Caroparo52 · 29/01/2025 15:51

You could put a closing arm on gate so it shuts automatically . Cheap to buy. Easy to fix. Would be extra peace of mind

republicofjam · 29/01/2025 15:52

Is neighbour called Hyacinth?

Then surely if pretty is down to a personal frame of reference then me storing an old car on my front lawn for scrap is none of your business either?

Differentstarts · 29/01/2025 15:53

Yanbu my neighbour tried to pull this crap when I first moved in as apparently there unsightly I ignored them and now all my neighbours put there bins where I do as its more convenient

RanchRat · 29/01/2025 15:54

Start drying your undercrackers on your front lawn - that will teach them not to interfere.

It's no one's business. Assuming you own your property so not in breach of landlords T&Cs and the vehicle is SORN.

Hillarious · 29/01/2025 15:55

Up to you, but the issue of the dog just weakens your argument. Just say that's where you prefer to keep them. Our bins are out at the front of the house, screened by ivy, and we have to open the back gate to put things in them.

Maddy70 · 29/01/2025 15:55

Bins at the front are unsightly tbh

SandyMarch · 29/01/2025 15:56

My neighbour has decided to do a separate open pail for bags of dog poo which she collects in there until bin day. Conveniently located outside her garden gate, presumably so she doesn't have to look at it. She's on her 2nd bucket full of poo. Once it's emptied that bucket will be disappearing.

Just a reminder, it could be worse OP

Thirteenblackcat · 29/01/2025 15:56

She can have any opinion she wants m, but just do what is best for you

YouFreakingFreaks · 29/01/2025 15:57

PersephonesPomegranate · 29/01/2025 15:26

Fair enough. Again though, I don't see why it can't be padlocked (stops the kids using it etc) but then opened on the odd occasion each week for the bins. Surely that solves both problems; security & neighbours? I can't understand why the bins need to move location just to enable a padlock.

I’m not understanding either.

OP you want it padlocked for peace of mind, it would only need to be unlocked once every 2 weeks/3 weeks or whenever your bin collection is surely?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/01/2025 15:57

Can you put an automatic closer on the gate?

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 29/01/2025 15:57

You have a side gate that isn't padlocked and you leave the back door open? <misses point entirely>

Op has bought her house there shouldn't be any argument. It's up to her where she puts her bins.

PsychedlicSally · 29/01/2025 15:58

I think bins out front make the street look untidy and the occupants look lazy, Fit a proper lock to the gate that can be opened from both sides. Screwfix/toolstation do them and they come with 6 keys. Easy DIY job to fit and excellent for security /privacy too.

Correct

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 29/01/2025 16:00

You are not an arsehole but surely if you solved the actual issue (ie your anxiety around the gate) this would be of greater benefit to you in the long run?
