Neighbour has an opinion on where I put my bins

We live in on a very quiet cul de sac. The homes have large front gardens and small drive ways. Almost identical to photo attached (not my street just an illustration of our set up). Houses also have a side yard/paved side garden where people keep their bins.

Well I have decided I will keep my bins in front of my garage at the front. We have a dog who gets let out throughout the day. I have a lot of anxiety around my dog being let out as I am not always convinced the side gate is left shut. It gets opened when it is bin day. Every time I let the dog out I have to check to see if gate is close and when I see someone else letting the dog out I shout at them to check. It’s just unnecessary chaos. Ideally I will just put a padlock on the side gate so teens don’t mess up by leaving it open. We live 3 turns away from a somewhat busy b road.

Anyway, a neighbour has since come around and said please can I put the bins back into the side garden as it is unsightly. Granted I am the only person on the cul de sac with them out. But who cares??

I am not the arsehole, right?

edit: whoops looks like I took out voting somehow

Our neighbours do this. The backdoor is on the other side of the house. They'd have to drag the bins along the alley way then up four steps and a steep drive to the front for bin collection. As it is they have to go through the front door and up the drive with rubbish.

Most homes were designed and built well before the the bin breeding programme 🙄

GreyAreas · 29/01/2025 18:07

I think it would be nice to allow all family members the courtesy of being able to access the gate and back door whether it's locked or not!
You don't even know that they are not checking the gate. Attaching a spring or a weight so it swings closed would work I think.
I'm with the neighbours, and with keeping good relations with neighbours which can be priceless.

Could you explain to me how leaving your bin out the front makes your grass grow faster and means you can’t cut it.

I don’t understand, is it food flying out of the bin makes compost, which aids grass growth?

How does it make paint peel on windows? Although who has wooden windows these days for paint to peel? Or is it another faux pa to have PVC or aluminium windows?

Because the sort of people who leave their bins out the front don’t take pride in where they live, and that manifests itself in more ways than one.

If moving the bins out and back once a week is simply too strenuous for someone, then weeding the flower beds and mowing the lawn is probably too much effort too - and they’ll probably end up just paving over the whole thing eventually. Because it’s easier…

I also find that leaving bins out the front is a gateway drug to those other behaviours. There are a couple of streets in my town that have really declined over the last decade, and it started with bins being left out.

TerrysCIockworkOrange · 29/01/2025 18:07

Google a ‘self closing gate spring’ @Opink

Pigeonqueen · 29/01/2025 18:08

We keep our bins at the front, alongside the fence which is at the end of our driveway. To be fair they’re mostly out of sight as once we park the car you can’t really see them. Our neighbours all keep theirs in their gardens and wheel them out for bin day. I have lupus and other health issues and it’s a lot of faff for me to unlock our gate, wheel them out over the gravel etc so it just works better us having them at the front. If anyone complained I’d just laugh; it’s our house, we own it, I’ll put my bins where I like!

How do you know the OP has an internal door, lots don’t!

Look at the photo of the house in the OP. The garage is integrated into the structure of the house. It’s not attached on the side. I’ve never once seen a garage like that that didn’t have an internal door. That would be bizarre.

lizzyBennet08 · 29/01/2025 18:11

It would bug me but I wouldn't say anything as I accept that people are entitled to keep their own property as they please. Not everyone is super house proud and I get that even if it would grate on me .

Anywherebuthere · 29/01/2025 15:39

Ignore her. Who is she to dictate where you put anything.

Its your property. Put the bins where its convenient for you. It's as simple as that.

I'm on team neighbour I'm afriad.

I back onto a residents carpark and have a neighbour who doesn't want their bins in their back garden or outside their own gate like everyone else on the street does.

No, they want their bins as far from them as possible, on the other side of the car park, roughly opposite their back gate. So that everyone else has to look out of their window in the morning and see their 3 wheelie bins instead of just a nice hedge and trees.

I've adapted but it drove me nuts for a while, what makes them so special they can't possibly have bins in their garden as everyone else does?

Can't you fix your gate so it is secure when shut? That seems to be the main issue.

Nah, that’s bullshit.

It’s akin to saying all of any group act a certain way, they don’t! People leave their bins out, some might not paint their windows, some will paint their windows.

I can’t believe we have people, that believe all people act the same way.

i find people like you are a gateway drug for busybodying and bullying and demanding only a certain “type of person” lives in “their” street.

SerafinasGoose · 29/01/2025 18:28

No, I don't think it looks great.

But why should anyone care what I think? Not my house. In which case, I wouldn't make a neighbour a present of that opinion unless directly asked for it.

Ten properties in our cul de sac six garages attached. None with internal doors. Only access from the garden door wise.

Attached to the side of the house or an integral part of the house with rooms above?

Not all people who leave their bins out the front neglect their front gardens, but they’re certainly more likely to than people who do put their bins away. And it only takes a few selfish and lazy people to lower the tone of an entire street.

Lovelysummerdays · 29/01/2025 18:35

As an aside it is a shame that the UK hasn’t invested into waste infrastructure. I lived in the Netherlands and rubbish collection was in underground units. You scanned your card ( you had an account) so many bags a week included in council tax type payment then you’d be charged. Much tidier than multiple wheelie bins all over the place. Or the large 1400l bins outside flats.

SnidelyWhiplash · 29/01/2025 18:38

I’m an inveterate snob, so I’d think you were lowering the tone of the neighbourhood. If it’s a nice road and neighbours take pride in their homes, I’d think it’s a shame to sully that with wheelie bins. I feel the same about caravans or clapped out cars.

However, it’s your choice. I might talk about you behind your back, but I’d never say something to you about your ugly bins being on show.

This one doesn’t, so as I say not all do!

I think you’ve also kissed that it’s not OPs house, the drive is the same as the photo she showed.

that's why many places have leese and rules to ensure the area is kept the way it is, and the way you found it when you moved there. I never understand people who want to ruin somewhere when it was the efforts of others who attracted them in the first place.

Personally, I would want to know if something I was doing was having a negative impact on my neighbours, and I would hope they would feel able to raise it with me. Your ‘busybody’ is in my view, a person who cares about where they live and those around them.

Ruin = leaving their bins in front of their garage?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I’d explain nicely but very firmly that where I put my bins would be my decision. I’d let you know that you bothered me and your thoughts were negatively impacting on me. So don’t worry.

LindorDoubleChoc · 29/01/2025 18:53

Yeah, bins are really ugly and if you have anywhere on your property to hide them then it's considerate and neighbourly to do so. If I were your neighbour I would silently judge you.

MajorCarolDanvers · 29/01/2025 18:53

It is unsightly. Not surprised your neighbours are miffed
