To expect our X-box 360 to last for more than ten months

We bought our x-box 360 ten months ago and it has broke this morning and can't be used. DH phoned the hepldesk and was told it was not under warranty and he would need to pay for the repair. Is this reasonable, given that it is less than a year old? Does anyone know the legal position here?

If you bought it from game or play and have the receipt they will replace it for you.

Game have replaced 3 for my avid gamer friend.

there is also a common problem in a consle made around a certian time (sorry no details) and I think if you have this problem they will replace it for you..

..sorry can't help more all secondhand info from above mentioned friend lol

MascaraOHara · 07/05/2008 10:13

in fact most retailers offer a year warentee

LuckySalem · 07/05/2008 10:14

Xbox 360's have a problem with the red lights. If you look on ebay there's hundreds that have this problem. If you have this i'd INSIST it gets fixed as it's a known manufacturers problem.

Enid · 07/05/2008 10:14

they always break

hence a ps3 here

mimismummy · 07/05/2008 10:23

that's exactly the problem lucysalem. They told hubby over the phone that he was not under warranty and wanted him to pay £60 there and then to have it fixed!!!! Will take it back to Game - thanks for the advice mascara!

If you phone the office of fair trading they should be able to advise you. I had a bed that snapped after 4 years and was told that the manufacturer would have to pay for the repair as it was within the time limit one would expect a bed to last.

we bought one from woolies and it broke after 6 mths. DH took it back and they replaced it. If its under 1 yr old the retailer will replace it. Microsoft will repair it if its under 3 years old for free because there is a problem with some consoles.

We bought ours from Game and 6 months in, the Ring of Death started flashing (the red light). Meant it was knackered.

Rang GAme and they replaced whole console without problem.

Should have a 12 month warranty on it from any supplier I would have thought.

glaskham · 07/05/2008 10:50

DH had the ring of death afetr about 7mths with his, microsoft replaced it with a new one. he's since sold that one to upgrade to one with a bigger harddrive etc and we've had no probs with this since we got it around 12mths ago.

bigknickersbigknockers · 07/05/2008 18:21

I was in a rush before mimi but what I wanted to say was that you have a 12 mth warranty with the retailer. We had the ring of death 6 mths after DH bought his xbox so he took it back to woolies and they replaced it no problem. Got the ring of death again 11 mths after date of first purchase and they replaced it, though not quite as willingly this time. If it breaks again once its 12 mts old then microsoft will repair it for free because there is a problem with some consoles (I think its the first ones that came out) This extended warranty is until the product is 3 years old. .DH took the hard drive out of his the second time he took it back and because he bought a package which included headset, 2 controllers and gears of war he got it replaced with similar packages so he has loads of controllers and 2 headsets and now has a spare hardrive.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 07/05/2008 18:26

We had the ring of death too - just two weeks before the end of the the 12 month warranty. It's a known problem - don't let anyone fob you off that you can't get a repair under warranty.

We did ours through xbox.com - they collected reapired and delivered it back with no charge.

littlebigmansdad · 07/05/2008 19:26

Hope this helps, If you've got the "ring of death" with the top right segment being the only one not lit then it's a hardware fault and will be covered by the warranty, see link below
www.xbox.com/en-GB/support/systemsetup/xbox360/resources/warrantyupdate.htm

and here

www.xbox.com/en-GB/support/systemuse/xbox360/resources/warrantyfaq.htm

mine died and after registering it for repair online here.

www.xbox.com/en-GB/support/

they e-mail along a shipping label and you arrange collection. In total it took about 4 weeks.

All for free

Thank you all for your help - sorry for the late reply! It was indeed a 'ring of death' and following the advice here, dh took it back to GAME and was given a new one - dh and ds now out of mourning and have big smiles on their faces!!!
