Can anyone in HR tell me if this could have happened?

i had a very awful period in my life a few years ago with an abusive relationship and terrible pregnancy. I had to go off on sick leave because of it. If my parents had tried to speak to hr or my manager would I have been told? Would they have kept this secret from me?

Who knows.

At my place, no. We wouldn't have entered into communication with your parents and we would have politely but firmly shut their attempt down. We'd maybe prompt your manager to check in on you , but we wouldn't tell you that your parents had tried to contact us.

Best practice would probably have been to tell you, but the context may have meant that they felt it wasn't safe for you or was otherwise not the right thing to do.
