Bringing toddler out in the rain

RainRainRain123 · 28/01/2025 09:36

Just started a new nanny position. Mother of the child (20 months) is quite insistent that he should be brought out twice a day even if its raining. He has rain gear, I do not. Just arrived this morning to be told he loves the library, its only a 30 minute walk each way, it's lashing rain here. I said if it eases of later I will get out with him. Questioned me yesterday if we went to the park. Has sent me numerous groups, all of which are at least 20 minutes walk away, not allowed take him out in the car. Where they live is also quite hilly and buggy isn't the best.

Mam seems to walk everywhere and always has her rain gear on. AIBU to not want to go out twice a day when the weather is bad.

She's not unreasonable to want her child taken out in all weathers

I would definitely want him to get out doors regardless of weather

All kids should be outdoors, whatever the weather

There is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothes

children need to be out regardless of the weather conditions

Either stupid people or people with a very limited understanding of the variations in weather.
🙄

I have no idea what 'lashings of rain' might mean to the OP but it is what I would describe gusty hard horizontal rain lashing in at force. Yeah. No one with half a brain is going out for a 30 min walk in that.

either stupid posters or posters with a very limited understanding of a normal conversation would read this absolutely literally.

No one with half a brain is going out for a 30 min walk in that.
not everyone is a snowflake. A bit of heavy rain doesn't mean all life has to stop.

If you change all your plans and stop doing anything everytime it rains, I sincerely hope you don't live in the UK 😂

beAsensible1 · 28/01/2025 12:16

you live in england, you should have appropriate rain clothing, a rain coat, a brolly?

a walk in the rain is fine in suitable clothes.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 28/01/2025 12:17

The car - whose car ?

yours ? are you insured for taking clients children in your car
is your car fitted with an appropriate car seat for this child ?

her car ? is she insured for you driving it ?

I am not a fan of the rain, but no ,it has never stopped me from going for a run, my kids to play sport or having a normal life. Rain clothes just make being outside more comfortable, how hard is it to understand.

I live in England of all places! Who in their right mind stay stuck indoors everytime it rains?

It's terrible for your mental health to be stuck and inactive. It would make me fat too 😂

@strawberrycrumbles

there are different degrees of severity of rain. No one is saying stay in if it’s just a little drizzle or shower that will pass.

also have you never heard of home workouts??! Being at home doesn’t mean sitting on your arse for hours on end

Auldlang · 28/01/2025 12:20

Some people wouldn't mind this, some would loathe it. It's really up to you whether you can stand it OP. There's rain and rain too. Where we last lived in west coast Scotland I might do a thirty minute walk in the rain sometimes, but not all the time. Cos that was a LOT of rain. On a lot of the days. Don't listen to the "are you made of sugar lot" of course you can walk in the rain and enjoy it too but being in the library dripping on the books isn't fun.

Biffbaff · 28/01/2025 12:03

Correction, insulting all the working parents who dictate how their nannies can transport their children to the library.

When I take my younger one to the library, half of the outing is the walk.

MsMarch · 28/01/2025 12:21

I hate rain so I have a lot of sympathy for you althogh i think asking you to get out every day is reasonabnle, and expecting you not to be completely deterred by a bit of rain is also reasonable.

However, I also think there's a huge difference between getting out to the park for a run round in the rain and puddles, vs a 30 minute walk in lashing rain to get to the library. Much as I hate rain, yes, I'd take my DC out sometimes even if it was cold and wet - but we'd drive to the park, get all our gear on, run around the park and get back in the car. I didn't walk along cold, wet, slippery pavements for 30 minutes first.

Similarly if you're walking and it's a bit drizzly, fine, no big deal. But if it's really coming down, that's really not fun for anyone so I think she's been a bit OTT personally.

I suspect this thread is fake.

AubernFable · 28/01/2025 12:22

I’m also a nanny, I think the mum sounds awesome getting her DC outside and walking rather than using the car, saves the environment and is much healthier. The child I look after spent a couple of hours at the farm during the storm the other week, she absolutely loved it and it was raining and a little windy.

I would say invest in some high quality rain gear, especially if you plan on staying in this line of work after this temporary position because lots of parents have similar expectations.

Lunde · 28/01/2025 12:06

This made me smile - my kids did nursery in the Swedish system where parents complained if their child wasn't out of doors for 4-6 hours per day ... longer in summer.

Rain, shine deep snow ... out you go!

The 1-2 year olds had restricted time when it got to the minus 25C range and the pram naps outdoors were restricted at minus 20(ish) ... although they put them in their prams in the playroom and opened the windows!

Your moral superiority must be a great comfort to you. Enjoy your smiling.

Crazybaby123 · 28/01/2025 12:24

Get a pair of water proof trousers and a raincoat and wellies, can get them relatively cheap. Chuck them on and go out. I have two boys and we get out in the rain alot. Boys often come back absolutely covered in mud, quick shower when we get in and all is fine.

heyhopotato · 28/01/2025 12:25

From your updates it just sounds like you can't be arsed to go out for a walk twice a day.

”a little windy” lol

Yeah naturally, same for me but I choose when I do that. I wouldn't do it for 2 hours in the sleet at someone else's behest.

Nobody would walk in sleet to the library. People on here say they would and that they’d love it but in reality they wouldn’t do it in a million years, they’d be getting the car out or just not bother.

It was only a little windy at the time, we didn’t get the worst of it in my area and if it was unsafe we would’ve made the decision not to go. They are a country family too so it takes a lot to dissuade any of them to stay indoors.

MumWifeOther · 28/01/2025 12:31

I think YABU. They are employing you and should get a say in how you’re spending time with their child. My mum is Scandinavian and always said that there’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes! We went out pretty much every day for fresh air and I’ve done the same with my children. Buy yourself some rain gear!

This made me laugh as well. I live in Germany and it's standard here to have rain clothes. I now wouldn't do it any differently and bring all their rain stuff when I come back to visit home (Scotland).

I'm now intrigued by German rain clothes. Are they different/superior to UK? All I have is a rains raincoat which is pretty good but now I'm wondering if there are additional items I need to up my game

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/01/2025 12:35

Quite apart from the fresh air aspect, most small children adore jumping in puddles!

Goldbar · 28/01/2025 12:35

When we had a nanny, she didn't drive and I prefer not to, so we'd both have walked to the library (20 minutes away). Library plus cafe are fairly typical entertainment for a very rainy day - it's warm, dry and our local library has enough to keep kids busy for a fair while (arts and crafts as well as books). I'm not pretending we'd enjoy the walk in sleeting cold rain, but we've both done it. It's preferable to having kids climbing the walls inside all day.

2JFDIYOLO · 28/01/2025 12:36

YABU. Get a decent raincoat, boots and hat. Get out there with the aquatic toddler.

Dishwashersaurous · 28/01/2025 12:37

I can't imagine turning up for work as a nanny in the UK without rain gear. Surely it's part of the key need for the job.

I spent more time outside with a toddler than at any other time in my life.

I'm confused at how you accepted the job but didn't understand what it involved.

On the car side, do you want to take the child out in your car?

Surely you agree car usage before you started?

According to my Swedish friend, daycare children in Sweden play out every day, regardless of temperature, rain or snow! Obvious they have to have the right clothes though.

I don't know where people live, but if there was a dangerous storm going on, the library would be shut and there would be no group going either 🙄

This thread is such a non-issue

Londonrach1 · 28/01/2025 12:38

Best way of keeping a toddler busy is to get out. Yabu and I question if you are qualified if you don't know this. Get a coat. It's rain it's not going to kill you!
