Bringing toddler out in the rain

RainRainRain123 · 28/01/2025 09:36

Just started a new nanny position. Mother of the child (20 months) is quite insistent that he should be brought out twice a day even if its raining. He has rain gear, I do not. Just arrived this morning to be told he loves the library, its only a 30 minute walk each way, it's lashing rain here. I said if it eases of later I will get out with him. Questioned me yesterday if we went to the park. Has sent me numerous groups, all of which are at least 20 minutes walk away, not allowed take him out in the car. Where they live is also quite hilly and buggy isn't the best.

Mam seems to walk everywhere and always has her rain gear on. AIBU to not want to go out twice a day when the weather is bad.

I actually think it's unreasonable of the mother to not allow you to drive occasionally. If she cares that much, she can do it. Oh no, wait, she's too busy and has given the job of looking after her child to someone else... Surely they get to decide if they're walking or not. You're her nanny not her slave.

... Don't you go to work then? Or do you have a time machine or something??

How is the parent supposed to be at work and at home looking after their child at the same time?

How is a person supposed to be at work at 9, but also be at a school at 9.for drop off? How are they supposed to be at work until 5, but also be at the school at 3:30 to collect their child...?

Even during a storm where cars are being crushed by falling trees and there is flooding and weather warnings?

People on mn just love absolutes. In relative life is about adapting to the situation.

who said they should still go out in the middle of a hurricane? 😂

YABVU. There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes.

Ffs. Yes yes. Mums of mumsnet dragging their kids out during Storm Eowyn dodging falling trees, loose roof tiles and ignoring weather warnings.

Don't be ridiculous. Of course there is bad weather.

Desperate to find a stick to hear someone with aren't you

Wickedclimber · 28/01/2025 11:46

Gently, it's your responsibility to make sure that you can fulfil your role. That includes having appropriate outdoor clothes in case it's raining.

HeronWing · 28/01/2025 11:46

Just wear a raincoat, OP. If you actually melt on contact with rainwater, you should have said so at interview.

As someone with a physical outdoor job, I absolutely fucking hate that saying. It always gets trotted out on threads like these in a twee way.

I have good gear. I've also spent all day in the pissing rain to the point of my waterproofs being saturated and leaking through. It's absolutely miserable- they need a chance to dry at some point. And I don't think wellies and a waterproof can protect you from taking a branch to the dome in high winds.

Walking 20 minutes to the library, isn't the same as being rained on for 6 hours...

fanaticalfairy · 28/01/2025 11:48

MyIvyGrows · 28/01/2025 11:35

A lot of car owners genuinely don’t. I was baffled when I realised this 😅

We own a car, but still have raincoats. Otherwise you'd be very limited to what you could do. And all the indoor stuff generally costs money! But puddle jumping, walking etc all freeeeeee.

MumChp · 28/01/2025 11:50

If you don't like the job then go to another family. The family pays you as a nanny. Being outdoor in rain isn't a real thing to complain over. Lots of kids in forest kindergardens are outdoor every day for hours with the staff.

the thread is about "the rain".

I am sure you can see the difference between "bad weather" and "life threatening weather" if you try hard enough...

@strawberrycrumbles

who said they should still go out in the middle of a hurricane? 😂
Errrr. Lots of people. Just read.

'There is no bad weather. Only bad clothes' Is being repeated over and over. Such a stupid comment. Like I said. People love speaking in absolutes.

There is bad weather. There is weather too bad to go out with a toddler. People just refuse to admit this. So yes they are saying go out in any weather. Even a howling fake and a hurricane apparently.

If that's not what they mean then they should say so. Not just say the OP is U as there is no such thing as bad weather 🙄

@RainRainRain123

if it’s really chucking it down YANBU to want to drive or stay in.

lots of mumsnetters are weird about the weather - they love to pretend that they and their kids love nothing more than wearing lots of ugly rain clothes and walking about in the pissing rain and wind for hours on end “cos there is no such thing as bad weather if you’ve got the right clothes!!”

yeah, no

Edited

Ugly rain clothes? Oh, the horror!

In what way is walking children to the library in rain comparable to an all-day outdoor physically-demanding manual job?

TheSidewinderSleepsTonite · 28/01/2025 11:55

I really don't see the big deal at all. My kids' nurseries go out in all weather and I think it's brilliant.
We had the dentist this morning, also lashing ice rain here. Wasn't ideal but we had to. 15 minute walk. I have a 4.5 year old and a just turned 2 year old. On the way home, they had a grand time running through the puddles.

TheSidewinderSleepsTonite · 28/01/2025 11:56

MemorableTrenchcoat · 28/01/2025 11:52

Ugly rain clothes? Oh, the horror!

This made me laugh as well. I live in Germany and it's standard here to have rain clothes. I now wouldn't do it any differently and bring all their rain stuff when I come back to visit home (Scotland).

middleagedandinarage · 28/01/2025 11:57

If the weather is really miserable I think going out twice a day is a bit much but I definitely think you should be going out once a day. I certainly don't think it's unreasonable of the mum to want her child outside and walking as much as possible. There's a huge expectation/emphasis from schools/nurseries now on getting lot's of outdoor time so

Biffbaff · 28/01/2025 11:59

fanaticalfairy · 28/01/2025 11:45

I didn't say the mother should do both, I said she should not place unreasonable demands on her childcare provider. I actually think it's pretty cunty of her not to let her nanny drive because things are "within walking distance". Yeah, lots of things are but it's still easier to drive sometimes. To be clear, I am not shaming the mother for working, I am shaming her for treating her nanny like she owns her. She can't dictate how she gets from A to B.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 28/01/2025 12:00

Years ago, I was a nanny for a couple of years. I quite agree with you. I gave up one job where the mother expected me to walk everywhere with her whiny toddler, who hated walking as much as I did.

I don't mind going out in the rain, though. But not long walks in it, dragging a reluctant toddler.

I think you should have found this out at interview, although I didn't!

You're going to end up leaving. I did.

chargeitup · 28/01/2025 12:00

@strawberrycrumbles

Comments on here...

She's not unreasonable to want her child taken out in all weathers

I would definitely want him to get out doors regardless of weather

All kids should be outdoors, whatever the weather

There is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothes

children need to be out regardless of the weather conditions

Either stupid people or people with a very limited understanding of the variations in weather.
🙄

I have no idea what 'lashings of rain' might mean to the OP but it is what I would describe gusty hard horizontal rain lashing in at force. Yeah. No one with half a brain is going out for a 30 min walk in that.

kiana2015 · 28/01/2025 12:01

Get a rain coat, or even ask her to get you one as the only reason you need it is for your job she should provide it

Biffbaff · 28/01/2025 12:03

strawberrycrumbles · 28/01/2025 11:30

congratulations for insulting all the working parents in one sentence.

Correction, insulting all the working parents who dictate how their nannies can transport their children to the library.

BlueRaven89 · 28/01/2025 12:05

JLou08 · 28/01/2025 12:06

Yes YABU, you are paid to do a job and you should know working in childcare involves going outdoors in all kinds of weather. I've worked in nursery's and we were expected to go outside with the children in all weathers. I have children myself and also take them out in any weather. If you were my nanny I'd be considering a replacement.

Lunde · 28/01/2025 12:06

This made me smile - my kids did nursery in the Swedish system where parents complained if their child wasn't out of doors for 4-6 hours per day ... longer in summer.

Rain, shine deep snow ... out you go!

The 1-2 year olds had restricted time when it got to the minus 25C range and the pram naps outdoors were restricted at minus 20(ish) ... although they put them in their prams in the playroom and opened the windows!

you are being ridiculous on purpose, I am not sure what point you are trying to make?

No need to spell out every single details, no one has said or implied you should brave a hurricane.

Where did you get that the OP was requested to go out in life-threatening weather? 😂 Posters use.. COMMON SENSE, you seem to be lacking of?
