Did I do anything wrong here? Driving

1000 replies

Azzywhatty · 27/01/2025 13:48

I drove home from rural Northumberland today. On a single track road my sat nav fell out of its holder onto the passenger side floor. There was a lorry behind me. I continued along the single track road until it widened into two lanes, then indicated left, slowed down and stopped so I could pick it back up.

The lorry behind me beeped as I stopped. Did I do anything wrong here? I indicated and slowed and waited until the road went back to two lanes and it was safe to stop. I can’t work out why he was beeping.

There was no other traffic in either direction.

YANBU - you did nothing wrong
YABU - you did something wrong (what and why??)

How did you hear the lorry if you could not hear the satnav 3 foot away.
Maybe an audiologist appointment as well as Specsavers!!??

See, this is the type of thread where you will get posters falling over themselves, determined to convince you you are the worst driver on earth no matter what you say.

Sounded perfectly safe to me - the lorry driver was probably just erring on the side of caution and making you aware they were passing you just in case you hadn't realised they were there. IMHO.

Yes, I agree, MN driving threads always go this way.

Fencehedge · 27/01/2025 14:10

Without knowing the road it's difficult to say. However you don't tend to stop in the middle of a dual carriage road unless there is parking etc.

What speed was this at? Lorries take a long time to slow down at 60mph and can't take quick manoeuvres. He was prob caught out if he had to swerve.

Lanawashington · 27/01/2025 14:10

But you weren't on a residential street - you were on a blooming carriageway! I suggest you go and re-read the Highway Code before you cause yourself, or someone else, an injury,

What do you mean by carriageway? I was on a road that had just turned from a single lane track. Not single lane on each side. One singular lane.

Most lorrys have cameras nowdays - it wouldn't surprise me at all if you got a ticket in the post OP!

malmi · 27/01/2025 14:11

I think your description of widening into "two lanes" has confused people into thinking you mean a dual carriageway when you just meant a normal road with one lane in each direction. YWNBU

Unless you mean a passing place but ime that wouldn't make it any easier for the lorry to pass

Of course it would. That's literally what passing places are there for.

Not in my experience of driving on country lanes every single day.

Mrsttcno1 · 27/01/2025 14:11

TheBucketFamily · 27/01/2025 14:08

It wasn't a dual carriageway though.

Yes it was? OP has said carriageway and two lanes.

You do not block a lane of traffic, OP did. You find a safe place to stop where you are off the road.

PersephonesPomegranate · 27/01/2025 14:11

QuestionableMouse · 27/01/2025 14:09

Country lanes don't have hard shoulders. You also can't pull off onto the verge because they have whopping big ditches!

Country lanes also don't have two lanes, which the OP refers to. Ergo...they didn't stop on a country lane.

For what?

It's not illegal to stop at the side of the road.

No they’re not. They are for narrow roads/lanes where the ‘southbound’ car pulls in to let the ‘northbound’ car pass and carry on.

They’re not ‘overtaking’ places.

I thought the lorry and OP were both going in the same direction and she stopped in front of him.

Arlanymor · 27/01/2025 14:05

So it was a A road? Highway Code says: You should not stop on an A road unless it is absolutely necessary, such as in an emergency, as stopping on a busy road like an A road can pose a significant safety risk to other drivers; always try to pull over to a safe, designated stopping area if you need to stop. So you should have found a lay-by or similar to remove yourself from the carriageway. Next time pull off the main road.

Edited

Of course it wasn’t an A road. It had just ceased to be a one lane road (one lane for both directions of traffic to share, not one each.)

Are you sure about that? Because these plenty of places where I drive daily that have two lanes, even if it's just for a short stretch.

You should have waited until there was a lay-by you could have pulled into. The driver may have thought you were turning then had a shock when you suddenly stopped.

Ok, so he probably felt he had to take evasive action to go around you then, with not enough notice. Lorries can't do quick manoeuvres.

Or he was an arse. Who can say?!

QuestionableMouse · 27/01/2025 14:11

It's not illegal to stop at the side of the road.

It's reckless and dangerous to come to a complete stop in an active lane - exactly what sort of road it was seems to be up for debate but it all examples it seems clear there wasn't parking and it was not a safe/suitable place to stop

RedRiverShore5 · 27/01/2025 14:15

Well, the know-it-alls have already said it was an A road or Clearway, have we had dual carriageway yet.

Oh my God. Dual carriageway?? I literally describe in the OP that it stopped being a single track road (one track for both directions of travel to share), to there being two lanes (one for each direction of travel). No dual carriageways.

Blackcordoroys · 27/01/2025 14:15

I’m not angry about this and I usually side with the driver on these threads but I think you were in the wrong. At the very very least you should have put your hazards on, but I would have kept going hntil I could find a passing place or verge to get off the road before stopping. The sat nav could have caught you up to the right place even if you went wrong before stopping.

In that case then you were blocking the lane you were in by stopping, so the lorry had to go into the other lane, for oncoming traffic, to get past you?

RedRiverShore5 · 27/01/2025 14:16

So we did get dual carriageway as well

Because it’s irritating as fuck when people disagree because they lack either comprehension or reading skills.

I , along with many others think you were being unreasonable and it would have been better to drive on until you could have found somewhere to pull over/park. You clearly don’t agree so why ask for our opinions?

I understand you needed to check your satnav, but presumably you could have doubled back if needed, which is something satnav can help with.
