Which fancy hotel would you have a micro wedding at in the UK?

i am engaged and decided I really don’t want to have a big wedding. I like weddings but most weddings to me are nothing spectacular especially when you find out how much they cost per head.

Fiance and I are also the last siblings in our families to get married so the novelty is kind of gone.

Fiance and I initially assumed we would do something small abroad with our siblings and parents. But I find the concept of being married in a country which I don’t know at all and where I don’t speak the language really daunting. The idea of running around the Tuscan countryside trying to find a place that sells a specific object really unappealing.

I was hoping to book my family rooms at a big country house and share a sort of mini break with food and activities.

Cliveden is at the top of my list but I just think there must be better value for money elsewhere.

What would you do if you were having my style of wedding?

Activities I like: boat trips, spa visit, clay pigeon shooting. That sort of thing

I don’t know if they do weddings but I’d say The Newt.

driedapricots101 · 26/01/2025 13:30

Which part of the country? Are you near cliveden? That's obvs at upper end of the country hotel market- very traditional (stuffy?) too perhaps, what vibe do you want?

Funderthighs · 26/01/2025 13:31

I’d choose The Harbour Hotel, Christchurch. It’s lovely.

QueenOfWeeds · 26/01/2025 13:31

Gilpin Lodges in the Lakes would be on my list! I also know someone who got married at Chewton Glen (well, I wasn’t invited - I think they did. Definitely had the reception there). Congratulations - sounds like a lovely way to celebrate.

Woodhill Hall, Otterburn

PokerFriedDips · 26/01/2025 13:32

Sounds lovely.

Do you want self-catering or catered hotel-style? Do you want you and your families to be the only ones there or are you happy to be sharing with the general public? How many rooms will you need and will any children be included?

UnstableEquilibrium · 26/01/2025 13:34

Portmeirion.
They specialise in biggish weddings where you take over the whole complex but they'd probably do you something smaller as well.

InternetRandom · 26/01/2025 13:34

The Goring does this. Would be obviously not a countryside experience but they have lovely gardens.

Reori · 26/01/2025 13:36

We are in the SE but everyone would be up for a bit of a drive. The Lakes are definitely an option. A family road trip sounds sort of fun to be honest.

There will be no kids, ideally catered as I just want an easy life.

I adore the Cotswolds but am very much open to other areas.

Swinton Park Castle in Yorkshire.
Storrs Hall in the Lakes.

Reori · 26/01/2025 13:37

Don’t mind sharing the hotel with others. I like the idea of doing it in a country hotel but equally something in London/Edinburgh also appeals

Hotel du vin in Brighton always looks lovely for weddings

AnnaMagnani · 26/01/2025 13:38

If money was no object, I'd go to Waresley Park.

You and your guests get sole use of the hotel, it looks lovely. Was done up by a Dutch billionaire so v stylish.

Has spa, great food, swimming in the lake.

kardashianklone · 26/01/2025 13:38

The Elvetham Hotel in Fleet, Hampshire. Beautiful. Where Henry VIII proposed to Jane Seymour. Gorgeous grounds. Completely idyllic inside and out. Also licensed for weddings inside and out. Coincidentally where the most recent MAFS UK was shot.

Middleton lodge, North Yorkshire gorgeous

Ilovelowry · 26/01/2025 13:40

Try the Old Bridge in Huntingdon. Very different vibe to Cliveden though!

Or for top end, Limewood in the new forest.

Onetimeonly2024 · 26/01/2025 13:40

Bit of a trek for you, but Gleneagles would suit. It’s fabulous 🥰 I would definitely have a small wedding there.

Reori · 26/01/2025 13:40

Thanks so much! Googling every venue mentioned.

Babbington looks right up my alley.

Loads of options in the New Forest. The Montagu Arms is lovely if your party isn't too big.

If I didn’t have budget constraints, Burgh Island hotel Devon.
