To ask how many items of clothing to keep

I have too many clothes and I’m trying to work out how many to keep, what is a sensible number of each item? I’ve already banned myself from buying any more this year but am really struggling to know what to get rid of. I work in an office but the attire is fairly casual. Any ideas?

Take or leave the bits that don't apply, but I'd say something like:

3 jeans
3 trousers
3 skirts of different styles
1 or 2 summer/maxi dresses
A few occasion dresses if you wear them/will wear them again (if you don't like wearing the same one twice then just get one on Vinted/ebay for each special occasion and sell it again immediately after so it doesn't hang around your wardrobe, or cost much money)
5 short sleeved tops
5 long sleeved tops
4 smart jumpers/cardigans
3 casual jumpers/cardigans/hoodies
2 "round the house" leggings
2 full workout outfits
2 sets of winter PJs, 2 summer

If you have far too many, you can quite quickly do a cull of:

  • is it knackered. If yes, out
  • does it fit. If no, out
  • does it flatter. If no, out. (Exceptions for things that are necessary but don't need to look good, like PPE)
  • do you actually wear it?

After that, I think the category approach works - eg, all your jeans in a pile, how many is that, is that the right amount for often you wear jeans

I will follow this thread for the important information. I need an intervention about clothes hoarding. Worse, I hoard clothes I don’t want to wear, while wearing out the ones I like and proceeding to mend them.
