Why do cats do this (lighthearted)

My cat sometimes looks terrified at one of the walls or at something invisible and will stare at it for ages or run away from it. Makes me wonder if my home is haunted! Anyone else's?

Greebles!

Bonjovispyjamas · 24/01/2025 12:57

I've read that they do that when they're concentrating on a sound that humans can't hear.

randomchap · 24/01/2025 12:58

Because cats are dicks.

HPandthelastwish · 24/01/2025 13:01

They can hear electricity in the walls. DD is autistic and can also hear it and says it's like a crackly buzz sometimes

Needmorelego · 24/01/2025 13:03

Because there's things there that only cats (and babies sometimes) can see.

Point812 · 24/01/2025 13:05

The sound thing makes sense! Thanks

This 😂

I just assumed cats were nutters tbh. Mine likes to hunt and bring home her kills. What's nuts about that you ask? She hunts MUSHROOMS.

BellaPizza · 24/01/2025 13:13

Sometimes its a tiny insect or a shadow, from a watch or similar that we wouldn't register.

ThatsWhatImTalkinAbout · 24/01/2025 13:15

Cats are arseholes! Mine will walk into a room and act like his hooman family are strangers, walk out, return a minute later like we are the long lost relatives he’s spent years looking for!😆

hellswelshy · 24/01/2025 13:17

Yes mine do this. I like to believe its because I have lots of nice ghosts, much like in Ghosts the TV programme 😀

iamnotalemon · 24/01/2025 13:19

Mine wakes me up throughout the night (live in a studio so I can't shut her in a separate room) and then sleeps all day like I'm the one who has kept her awake 😂

FionnulaTheCooler · 24/01/2025 13:21

This is why.

Mine likes to wait till my husband is working away, it’s late at night and she’s curled up on my lap. Suddenly she’ll raise her head and listen/stare intently at something out on the landing, jump off my lap and run all low to the ground round the other sound of the coffee table, eyes massive and ears forward. Scares the crap out of me! Half the time it’s her brother coming in through the cat flap downstairs but half the time there’s nothing there. Or is there?!

Oreosareawful · 24/01/2025 13:33

When I was a child I remember our family cat reacting to a blank wall like there was a huge dog in the corner. She puffed up to twice her size, howled, hissed and screamed blue murder.
I've never been more convinced that she could see a ghost and it terrified me!

MileyPsoriasis · 24/01/2025 13:37

Cats are just a bit spekkle aren't they?
If it's an orange, they get bonus points.
We've got 3 oranges and a white one with bits on (basically a doormat crossed with a salmon tin) They're all weird.
My dc call it "skitty kitty" when they do the thing you're referring to. Heaven knows why they do it though.
