Housing association saying I’m unreasonable I don’t think I am !!!

HAunreasonable · 24/01/2025 08:23

The HA need to do planned repair/upgrade work. The appt slots are 830-1230 or 130-530.
I asked them to book mine around school runs but twice they’ve turned up when I’m out ? Now saying that if they are ‘refused entry’ a third time it will lead to further action???

Surely they have to be fair about this and come at a time that works for everyone

How is OP obstructive?

The HA can’t be bothered to provide acceptable slots.

We all put up with bad customer service, that’s why it’s come to this.

If a plumber finishes a morning job by 11:00 he can’t just turn up for the afternoon one two hours earlier, so he can finish and go home early.

Justgorgeous · 24/01/2025 08:46

You will just have to say your child is unwell and when they have gone, take them in.

saraclara · 24/01/2025 08:47

DaisyChain505 · 24/01/2025 08:41

You’re having something repaired in your home for free.

people who have mortgages and have to pay for their own repairs will be given times slots just like this too and have to deal with it.

you don’t deserve special treatment over anyone else.

OP had already said that this isn't something that she needs doing. If she was fortunate enough to own her home, this appointment would not be necessary.

I rather like having control over my own life, rather than a landlord deciding what will happen (whether I want it or not) and making my life difficult unnecessarily.

They often do though, fuckers!

Ellie1015 · 24/01/2025 08:48

That's really frustrating. I would ask for a morning slot and take the kids to school asap afterwards hopefully they arent too late in. Should still be marked as present for the afternoon at least and hopefully just late for the morning.

Katrinawaves · 24/01/2025 08:50

HAunreasonable · 24/01/2025 08:34

They won’t authorise the absence though as it could end up a whole morning or afternoon off

And so what? There are no consequences for a single unauthorised late arrival. You only get fined if you take the kids out for more than 5 days or get followed up if you are a persistent offender. A single late mark or half day absence is totally meaningless.

Datafan55 · 24/01/2025 08:50

Lougle · 24/01/2025 08:41

No, she's paying rent and the property owner is repairing the property they own. It's not 'free'.

A non HA person has to pay for labour and costs of any/all repairs - it is not covered by rent or mortgage - so it really is free for a HA tenant.

(plus private rent and mortgage can be much higher)

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/01/2025 08:50

Yes, because clearly their time is the most valuable.

And we put up with it.

crowsfeet57 · 24/01/2025 08:52

HAunreasonable · 24/01/2025 08:36

I dont understand why they can’t use a key ? If for example it’s an afternoon slot and they turn up at 2pm and the job takes a while I have to leave for school run at 230 ? What will they do say they can’t continue and leave when I do ? Surely not so why can’t I leave a key !!!

They won't stay in the house without you or let themselves in when you're not there. This would leave the operatives vulnerable to being accused of stealing or damaging items, it also leaves you vulnerable to having things stolen or damaged.

HAunreasonable · 24/01/2025 08:53

Sorry but do you work? How do you think people manage this kind of thing if they’re at work all day?
YABU

I work 6pm - midnight mon - Fri and one Saturday a month

915 as traffic and buses are awful that time of day but it’s not too bad I thought ? They aren’t flexible at all. One of my dc isn’t allowed at breakfast club till they secure 1-1
for him so I can’t use that option yet

Is your child disabled? Ask them for reasonable adjustments for disability. Contact your MP.

blahblah89 · 24/01/2025 08:54

Put your kids in breakfast/after school clubs for one day.

blahblah89 · 24/01/2025 08:54

Ah sorry just read you can't.

I've never had an issue saying that they need to work within the school day.

OP if they can't, they just need to make it in the school holidays.

It looks like you have no solution then other than to wait and see what further action they’ll take. I don’t think there are any other suggestions that could be made that haven’t been made already, I highly doubt they will evict you so all you can do if you can’t make it work is wait and see what action they take.

He has GDD and ADHD so I think that’s SEN not sure if it’s classed as disability

You’re living in subsidised housing, I think you need to be a bit more accommodating tbh when they’re coming to ensure you have decent living conditions.

We have to work around tradesmen and we own our house and our paying ourselves, it’s very normal.

Reallybadidea · 24/01/2025 08:56

Winter2020 · 24/01/2025 08:45

Really. The gas guy rang me the other day as annual service is due and I said "It will have to be after the school run" and he said "half nine ok". Easy as that.

Exactly.

YANBU OP and it isn't just how life works IME. I think you'd have got more sympathetic responses if you were renting privately, people expect ha/council tenants to just suck really poor service up and be grateful.

Which is ridiculous. I have rental flats and tenants don't stay in for repairs.

Who's it being subsided by?

adviceneeded1990 · 24/01/2025 08:57

Can whoever looks after your kids when you work 6-Midnight not take a days annual leave and be home during the day then?

Growsomeballswoman · 24/01/2025 08:57

Most HA's have10-2 appointment slots to accommodate the school run

user243245346 · 24/01/2025 08:57

Can you get someone to sit in the house while you do the school run?

What are you talking about? A housing association tennent is paying rent that isn’t covering a mortgage. Their rent pays for repairs. It’s free? Where does the money come from then? Santa? There is no ‘free’! Housing association rent covers the cost of managing and maintaining properties, as well as future repairs and improvements. Rent also helps to repay loans taken out to build or improve properties.

I’d just report them to school as sick on that day and stay home to wait, if you genuinely have no neighbour or school mum contact who could help. Not ideal, but sounds as though you have no other option.
