Housing association saying I’m unreasonable I don’t think I am !!!

The HA need to do planned repair/upgrade work. The appt slots are 830-1230 or 130-530.
I asked them to book mine around school runs but twice they’ve turned up when I’m out ? Now saying that if they are ‘refused entry’ a third time it will lead to further action???

Surely they have to be fair about this and come at a time that works for everyone

i think people think that everyone in HA property is getting it for free ? I work and I pay rent I do get UC but because I work evening and weekend and my mum does my childcare I’m not even claiming childcare costs . It’s not like I’m ungrateful for my home and for UC I just have to try and fit things around school. I won’t lie I don’t really want the dc off school it’s the only break I get !!

There's a lot of the "chattering class" on Mumsnet with 6 figure household incomes who's only exposure to people who need UC is from the Telegraph which will paint you as someone who puts buying a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of vodka over buying food for their child.

Know your place and be grateful OP... 🫣

I’ve also asked in my email about an appointment in the half term week and can they put me as a priority for a date that week

Maddy70 · 24/01/2025 09:27

Can you ask a neighbour to let them in of you're on the school run?

FoxInTheForest · 24/01/2025 09:28

Also further action is likely a warrant, which if they turn up with at the correct time is a complete non-issue. Their own time they're wasting if they do that.

Gingercatlover · 24/01/2025 09:28

Just book either and tell the school kids have a dentist appointment and either drop after lunch or pick up then.

Half a day off school is not going to matter if you have no other option, not ideal but not a lot else you can do...

BOREDOMBOREDOM · 24/01/2025 09:29

Does the school have a breakfast club? Then you can get back in time for the morning slot maybe

Cosyblankets · 24/01/2025 09:29

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 24/01/2025 09:04

It’s becoming normal because people like you facilitate it.

Edited

And why wouldn't you?
Would you rather wait in all afternoon or havethem ring to see if you're in so the job can get done earlier?
They can ask
You don't have to agree if it's not convenient and you've made arrangements

Why disrupt a child's entire day and education for the sake of a contractor potentially having to wait 10 minutes or come back a different day? That would be ridiculous.
Especially with a SEN child, they're likely finding school hard enough without missing lessons unnecessarily and having a change of routine and being expected to lie about being off school.

A non HA person has to pay for labour and costs of any/all repairs - it is not covered by rent or mortgage - so it really is free for a HA tenant.

(plus private rent and mortgage can be much higher)

No it isn't. The cost is built into the rent. Just like a private tenant wouldn't pay for repairs to the house they live in.

Maboscelar · 24/01/2025 09:31

romdowa · 24/01/2025 08:33

You'll have to let the school know that you will have to drop the children late on that particular day. Not much else you can do

This. Just tell school the kids need a half day because you have to be home and have no options to get the children to school.

Nonaynevernomore · 24/01/2025 09:31

YABU this is part of living in a house, either owned, rented or whatever.

if works need doing, you need to accommodate the service provider. If you’d booked time off work etc and they’d let you down then you’d have more of a reason to ask for a specific time.

So far you’ve missed two appointments.

Afairyadragonandawarrior · 24/01/2025 09:33

Can you ask them for the name of the contractor they've allocated your job and give them a call to explain the situation? My husband is a tradesman and he gets this when he does work for insurance companies etc. We always try to accommodate requests to avoid school times, even if we have to agree a different day with the customer. Good luck, hope you get it sorted!

FoxInTheForest · 24/01/2025 09:33

Dotjones · 24/01/2025 09:21

This is the same thing someone who rents privately has to deal with, it's the same thing someone who owns have to deal with if they want work done. Slots are set like this because it helps them manage their day. The customer is expected to bend to accomodate the service provider, not the other way around.

No it's not. Whenever we've had work done they've booked it for either a set time or "around 11am" then been slightly after etc.
If a plumber or similar said "ill be there this day between 8am and 2pm" I'd book a different one.

You probably need to move to private rented. Look for a landlord who has a smaller number of properties & they will most likely let you book repairs, checks etc directly with the engineer/company so you can get more flexibility.

I would personally pay for childcare (child minder/breakfast club etc) as HA is massively cheaper than private rented where I am but If you genuinely don't have access to any of those in your area then private rented where rent is higher but landlord can be flexible might suit you better

No it's not. The OP says she doesn't need this work doing. She recognises that maintenance is needed, and so she's willing to accommodate them. But if she was arranging this herself, she'd arrange it for a time that worked for her or for half term week.

Digdongdoo · 24/01/2025 09:39

You'll need to find someone to let them in or take the kids to school for you. A childminder, or another school mum? This isn't a HA issue, it's a tradesmen/utilities issue - they're often the same, can't guarantee a time. If it's something like a gas safety check, they have to do it and you have to facilitate it.
It's not like you're needing time off work even, so you'll have to make one off arrangements, even if it means the DC having a morning off school

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 24/01/2025 09:39

You're going to need to get a favour from a friend, either to do the school run one day or to sit in your house while you do the school run.

I used to love being asked by fellow parents to do them a favour and take their kids to school or pick them up. It's a favour in the bag for when I was in a tricky situation and needed a hand!

So if the plumber encountered a problem on your job that meant they had to stay longer you'd be happy if he cut it short to get to the next job? This is why plumbers etc give a window of time. You don't know what you're dealing with until you start the job.

Just make arrangements and get the work done. YABU.

That's helpful.

She's just explained why that's not possible.

Not everyone has friends or family nearby to help

I’ve had this and I own my home. Trades or services offering a half day between x and y. It’s totally normal.
