Are Fish and Chips worth it?

girlfriend44 · 23/01/2025 13:32

Normally cook my own, but last night went to the Chippy.
Had 2 large Cod and Chips and a pot of mushy peas.
Cost 23.80.
Found it very underwhelming.
So glad I normally do my own.

I know costs have gone up, but do you think it's worth the cost?
Do you enjoy it?

It depends how much money you have and how much you like fish and chips really

SquigglePigs · 23/01/2025 13:37

Depends on the fish and chip shop!

We've got 2 near us that have won regional and national awards and they are definitely worth it. Beautifully cooked fish, light crispy batter, delicious chips with curry sauce and mushy peas on the side!

Some other local ones....not so much!

Completelyjo · 23/01/2025 13:38

Without knowing how much food there was or what the quality was like no one can tell you it was worth it!

IAmADescendantOfSweepTheSqueakyLegend · 23/01/2025 13:38

Depends on the Chippy.

PandoraFrontier · 23/01/2025 13:39

No. The cost is obscene these days.

ThisSlothAintMovingToday · 23/01/2025 13:40

Depends on the quality. Some chippies are better than others. I will always say Lewis' chippy at Seahouses in Northumberland is worth the price, especially sitting eating them on the beach washed down with some dandelion and burdock.

Bjorkdidit · 23/01/2025 13:41

That doesn't sound worth it, but come to Yorkshire, they're definitely worth it.

It would be haddock, so nicer, cost maybe £18 for that, and there would likely be leftovers unless you're very big eaters as the portions are huge. And tastes delicious.

Zippedydodah · 23/01/2025 13:41

It certainly depends on the chippy; the van that delivers to our village is the best I have ever tasted! Needs to be very fresh and eaten immediately.

SallyWD · 23/01/2025 13:42

Our chippy is £7.50 for a generous portion of fish and chips. It's really delicious and worth the money.

Aliflowers · 23/01/2025 13:43

Properly done. Yes definitely worth it. Properly cooked chips and crispy fish. Also I don’t deep fry at home as cant stand the lingering smell of oil so it’s the only way I’m going to be able to eat it

Lilyhatesjaz · 23/01/2025 13:43

Worth it to sit somewhere nice by the sea on a day out. Not worth it to take them home when a box of 4 fish is about 6.50 and a bag of chips 4.00.

KnickerlessParsons · 23/01/2025 13:45

Depends on the chippy. We have one really good one and a second mediocre one. But both chippies' portions are enormous. An adult cod and chips is enough for both DH and me. A child's portion is too much for one adult too.

RampantIvy · 23/01/2025 13:45

From a chippy no. Our local pub does a brilliant fish and chips. The fish is in beer batter and is very light and crispy.

DreamW3aver · 23/01/2025 13:47

Sounds like you need a flow chart

Do I like fish and chips Y/N
Do I like these fish and chips enough to pay what they cost Y/N

And then youwill have the answer

samarrange · 23/01/2025 13:47

Being old we share a large cod and chips, and for about £11 where we are it's not too bad for a treat. A whole large cod and chips for one person is probably getting on for 1,500 calories, especially if you wash it down with a can of Irn-Bru.

outdooryone · 23/01/2025 13:47

No.
I may do it once a year when I find myself in some suitable coastal / beach type location. Last time I had fish and chips was in Oban in May 2024.

There are nicer foods, let alone the cost.

EveryDayisFriday · 23/01/2025 13:47

That's expensive. My chippy does a family box for £16 which a large pizza box filled with chips, onion rings, 2 sausages, 2 large fish, gravy, curry and peas.

Fawn87 · 23/01/2025 13:47

My son got fish and chips the other day. It cost £9.80. The fish was huge and there were loads of chips, it looked really well cooked too. I don't think that's a bad price but in some places the quality isn't so good and the fish can be small. I only get it when I have a craving for it which is about twice a year, but I do spend money on other takeaways.

FoxtonFoxton · 23/01/2025 13:48

I used to love them and we have a brilliant local chip van that visits the village, but sadly my body seems to have decided fried stuff (particularly the fish) doesn't agree with me anymore. I've had terrible stomach ache and indigestion the last few times I've tried, so that's it for me.

Strictlymad · 23/01/2025 13:48

Depends on the quality as other have said. We went to an absolute stonking place in Hunstanton in December, i think is was £14 eating in. Absolutely ginormous portions or the flakiest chunkiest fish with the most crispy chips ever. Worth every penny.

DerekFaker · 23/01/2025 13:48

Bloody hell that's expensive! My local chippies are reasonably cheap and very nice.

TonTonMacoute · 23/01/2025 13:50

Yes, but we have an excellent chippy.

Like a PP we have a large cod and medium chips between two. I would never bother to make it at home.

Dotjones · 23/01/2025 13:50

Depends on the quality and quantity of what you got. Seems expensive but maybe that's the going rate round your way.

I've tried several chip shops round my way and the quality is variable. Some I'd be prepared to pay what you did, others I'd never visit again, unless I was truly desperate.

One "fancy" chip shop in a previous town I lived in was absolutely shocking. Poor quality and (perhaps merficully) small portions. But somehow surviving despite being overpriced because of trade from visitors to the town... the place looked the part, even if the food was lacking.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/01/2025 13:50

The idea and fantasy of fish and chips from the chip shop is always so much better than the reality. I always sigh with happiness when I open the package, the lovely smell! And mushy peas! Oh the joy!!
Then after about four bites I'm like 'meh ..' feels like so much wasted calories! It's actually quite stodgy and bland. And the chips are never crispy.

I guess I need to go up north for the proper version! 🤣

Blueskieslookingatme · 23/01/2025 13:52

Meals from our local chippies are hit & miss, the quality of the fish depending on whether it's fresh out of the fryer or has been languishing under glass for a while.
And far too many chips are shovelled on to make up for the decreasing fish portion sizes.
It's not the chippy owners' fault. Costs of everything have shot up - seemingly since Covid.
The surplus chips crisp up nicely in the air fryer the next day.
