Are Fish and Chips worth it?

Normally cook my own, but last night went to the Chippy.
Had 2 large Cod and Chips and a pot of mushy peas.
Cost 23.80.
Found it very underwhelming.
So glad I normally do my own.

I know costs have gone up, but do you think it's worth the cost?
Do you enjoy it?

I’ve had a brilliant fish and chips in my local Morrisons at a very affordable price.

In the Old Days, when I were a lass, chippies used beef dripping in the fryers. This reaches a higher temperature than vegetable oils, making for crisp batter and chips - lovely! I find the vegetable oil can't make them crispy, it seems to leave them flabby/soggy and frankly not as nice to eat

@WhereYouLeftIt thats so true. Proper Irish chippers (the Italian ones) use beef dripping hence why everything is so bloody delicious. We were visiting DHs cousin in York and got some fish and chips one evening. They were very nice but missing that distinctive taste that can only be gotten from tallow. She said it’s not as popular to use it anymore on the UK

It's definitely much less widely used but there are chippies in York that still use beef dripping, so you ended up in the wrong one there.

Are Fish and Chips worth it?

I share fish and chips with dh and heat a tin of mushy peas as they really are a rip off. Costs £9.50 so we’re happy with that. Lovely fish.

ERthree · 23/01/2025 15:59

A fish supper at my local Harbourside chippy is less than a tenner, 2 pieces of meaty fish and great proper chips, all wrapped in newspaper. Worth every penny.

Motomum23 · 23/01/2025 16:00

I live in Cornwall and am yet to find a chippy that really hits the spot of crispy delicious batter and white flaking fish. So no, not worth it
Same with take away currys - just not worth the cost!

I've had fish and chips in various locations in Yorkshire and they have always been cooked in dripping.

My favourite meal so I will always have proper shop fish and chips. Used to be a weekly treat but cost means it's more a monthly one

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 23/01/2025 16:04

We live a few miles from the coast. Our village chippy is dreadful but we drive to a coastal town occasionally that has an amazing chippy. Eating them on the beach is a real treat.

Comefromaway · 23/01/2025 16:11

Its definitely worth it for me but we don't pay nearly that much.

Portions at our local one are huge. Cod chips & mushy peas are £9.40 each but we tend to share a large portion which is £12.50 between the two of us.

Or sometimes I have a kids meal which is £5

JudgeJ · 23/01/2025 16:15

And the chips are never crispy.

Recently when I've brought fish and chips home I have put some into the air fryer to crisp them up whilst I get plates etc.. Even those not eaten can be kept in the fridge then air fried later, our chippy does huge portions of chips, I have to tell them to stop!

Blueskieslookingatme · 23/01/2025 13:52

Meals from our local chippies are hit & miss, the quality of the fish depending on whether it's fresh out of the fryer or has been languishing under glass for a while.
And far too many chips are shovelled on to make up for the decreasing fish portion sizes.
It's not the chippy owners' fault. Costs of everything have shot up - seemingly since Covid.
The surplus chips crisp up nicely in the air fryer the next day.

Air-frying the leftover chips - genius! I always end up binning them (loads of them) so this actually makes me slightly more likely to buy fish 'n' chips!

worcesterpear · 23/01/2025 16:17

I had some last week at the seaside that were definitely worth it: £6.95 for a "small" portion that was actually really big and the nicest fish and chips I'd had in ages. A lot of the time I agree, though, it is expensive and disappointing (too stodgy and tasteless).

girlfriend44 · 23/01/2025 16:18

Not a faff peeling some spuds.
I do the fish in the oven and have proper home made chips tasty.

Did notice though that the mushy peas were better from the chip shop rather than tinned.

Depends. I love proper fish n chips. I live on the south coast so we have some lovely chippies here. Our local one does two small cod and one small chips for about £18 but the fish and the chip portions are huge! The "normal" fish hangs over the plate so the small one is fine.

MyDeftDuck · 23/01/2025 16:25

Our local chippy is rubbish as are many in the wider neighbourhood. Much prefer to have fish and chips at a reputable restaurant to be honest but even that has to be a special treat - couldn't justify the expense on a regular basis.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 23/01/2025 16:34

I'll tell you now, the fish and chips from Hobbs & Sons, at the Black Country museum, are most definitely worth it. Cooked in beef dripping and blimin gorgeous. I dream about them sometimes.....

pestowithwalnuts · 23/01/2025 16:37

I remember when TakeAways opened again after lockdown.
I think it was just because I couldn't buy them when I wanted them...but at that time I craved fish and chips in a mad way.
We passed a shop that was open..bought some and sat in the car eating them. They were so hot they were burning my legs through the paper and my clothes..but God in heaven...were they good So good in fact that they were worth the ,,£26 I paid. And I would have paid more at that time.
I'm happy to pay for good f&c..plus mushy peas.

Boffle · 23/01/2025 16:46

Home made chips are not the same without a deep fat fryer. Mine broke a year ago and I didn't replace it. I've tried air fryer and oven but nothing compares. So home made fish and chips are aways second best to me.
We have them about once every three months from the chippy. DS is coming over this weekend and will call for F&C on the way.

Ditto the ones at Beamish Museum, although the queues are always epic.

Lovelysummerdays · 23/01/2025 16:55

I think it’s just too expensive. I just fake it. Two large beer battered haddock and chips in the air fryer, mushy peas, homemade tartar sauce (an essential!) is about six quid feeds me and the kids.

GreenYellowBrown · 23/01/2025 16:57

We always get one large cod and chips between us and then DH has a battered sausage as well. I have about 2/3 of the fish, he has 1/3 of the fish and the sausage, we each have half of the chips. With 1 curry sauce, it’s about £14 which is ok and it’s very nice. I think it’s worth it for a nice easy meal 😋

In fairness to DH cousin she’d only moved to York from rural Yorkshire so it was literally a pin in a hat when we picked the place. Had one of the best pies of my life so that will take priority over the fish and chips next time we’re over lol

RosesAndHellebores · 23/01/2025 18:23

Near us a portion of fish and chips is £14. It is enough for two. It is pretty good but I think it's a lot for what it is and it always gives me indigestion.

By the time I get in the car, park and wait, I could have bunged some sliced potatoes in the oven, sizzled a couple of sirloin and tossed a salad together - all for not much more.

SisterAgatha · 23/01/2025 18:39

All this talk of beef dripping is making me hungry!!! I properly fancy some chip shop chips now.

I have never had a chip at home or anyone else’s house that even remotely compares.
