Are Fish and Chips worth it?

girlfriend44 · 23/01/2025 13:32

Normally cook my own, but last night went to the Chippy.
Had 2 large Cod and Chips and a pot of mushy peas.
Cost 23.80.
Found it very underwhelming.
So glad I normally do my own.

I know costs have gone up, but do you think it's worth the cost?
Do you enjoy it?

No, absolutely categorically they're not worth £20+++

Takeaway Fish and chips used to be a quick and cheap option for when you can't be arsed to cook after a very busy day.

I'd go swimming as a child once a week and my mum would pick up some fish n chips afterwards so she didn't need to worry about cooking. It'd take the chippy people about 3 seconds to grab you a portion wrapped in a Daily Mail page, cost us 2 quid or less per portion. Loved it.

I think the only attraction for fish and chips now is the nostalgia for family memories like that?

Itiswhatitis80 · 23/01/2025 13:57

The chippy near me is extortionate!very small portions,it only survives because there is a lot of elderly people in my village who go regularly.

A Daily Mail page!?

mrsm43s · 23/01/2025 13:58

These threads always make me want to cry. That would cost £48.10 from my local fish and chip shop, hence we pretty much always decide it's not worth it. We're actually pretty well off, but FIFTY QUID for a couple of portions of fish and chips never feels like money well spent.

(large cod =£16.25 each, large chips =£6.50 each, mushy peas £2.60). We live in Surrey.

That's expensive. My chippy does a family box for £16 which a large pizza box filled with chips, onion rings, 2 sausages, 2 large fish, gravy, curry and peas.

That’s crazy cheap. I’m in the north, and our local chippy is £14 for fish and chips for one! We have it about twice a year now. I’d rather go out for a nice pub meal instead.

Circumferences · 23/01/2025 13:59

I guess I need to go up north for the proper version! 🤣

You're not wrong! Yorkshire fish in chips is genuinely fantastic. Still wouldn't pay £20+ though.

A Daily Mail page!?

Or The Sun 😂

Natsku · 23/01/2025 14:01

Can't get proper fish and chips in my country so they are definitely worth the cost when I'm in the UK but the prices really are ridiculous now. I used to run down the chippy every Friday evening with my brother, get a portion of chips for 80p, and it'd be a massive portion.

BurntBroccoli · 23/01/2025 14:02

I do love fish and chips especially when you're at the seaside but it's a very, very rare treat.
You can't reheat them either like a curry or pizza, so no leftovers for lunch to stretch it a bit.

BurntBroccoli · 23/01/2025 14:04

Bjorkdidit · 23/01/2025 13:41

That doesn't sound worth it, but come to Yorkshire, they're definitely worth it.

It would be haddock, so nicer, cost maybe £18 for that, and there would likely be leftovers unless you're very big eaters as the portions are huge. And tastes delicious.

That's reminded me, I was in Sainsburys the other day and noticed that 10 Findus haddock fingers were £4.50!

Leftover curry or pizza? I'm sorry I don't understand

TartanMammy · 23/01/2025 14:09

It's the convenience as well though isn't it? It's such a faff to peel potatoes, cut into chips, fry and batter fish. Then there's all the clean up.

Even fresh fish from the supermarket is expensive.

I love a fish supper!

Unpaidviewer · 23/01/2025 14:09

Our local one is worth it. The fish is huge so DH and I share. I can never make it quite as well at home.

Fish and chip supper here, chips and two fish - you'll get change out of £12.00.

BunnyLake · 23/01/2025 14:11

I only eat it about once a year or less. I ‘treated’ myself to some a few months ago and it was horrible. The chips were dry and anaemic and the batter was terrible (maybe a bit undercooked). First and last time I go to that particular chippy (cost £10 for one person).

mitogoshigg · 23/01/2025 14:12

That's cheap for fish and chips! But yes definitely worth it here as I don't deep fry at home

LeopardSnow · 23/01/2025 14:13

Fish and chips have gone up in price more than other foods because they are uniquely exposed to several of the catastrophes happening in the world right now.

  • Lots of the worlds whitefish catch is caught by the Russian fishing fleet and there are EU sanctions on some of it, so less fish getting into the UK and higher prices.
  • Brexit. In the UK we mainly eat fish that our own fishing fleet doesn’t catch, we sell fish from British waters to Europe so the fishermen are screwed because of big tariffs on that. The fish we do eat (cod, haddock, salmon, prawns, tuna) is caught mainly elsewhere and now we’ve left the EU we pay big tariffs on that.
  • Fish and chips are mainly fried in seed oils, who is the world largest producer of seed oils - Ukraine, who obviously aren’t sowing, harvesting and exporting much, so prices are soaring.
  • Very cold and wet summer because of climate change which has buggered up the European potato harvests more than most other crops.

The big rise in labour and energy costs will be affecting every restaurant / cafe / business too but only fish and chip shops are also getting hammered by all the above factors.

So yes it will have gone up loads in price, a good bit more than other foods, and that’s why

goingtotown · 23/01/2025 14:14

2 large cod & chips £28. Hertfordshire.

ItGhoul · 23/01/2025 14:15

As with all things - whether it's 'worth it' depends on how much the money means to you, how good the fish and chips are etc.

Our local chip shop is one that's regularly named in lists of the best chippies in the UK and it's really good. Two large cod/haddock and chips and two pots of mushy peas/curry sauce from there comes to £25 and for me, it's totally worth it. They also do really nice locally-made pies, free range chicken and usually a few specials on their menu as well.

Sorry I love a chippy but that sounds awful! Why would you put onion rings and curry sauce in with fish and chips??? As well as peas?! And in a pizza box?!?!

wizzbitt · 23/01/2025 14:16

I love fish and chips and yes they are ridiculously expensive. Where I lived in London there was never a decent one so I just went without. Thankfully I have a Scottish partner who's family live in Stirling so whenever we go there we take a day trip to Anstruther (if you're ever that way OP 😆) for the best fish and chips. Expensive? Yes! Worth it? Bloody hell, yes!
I live in Brighton now and there's a lot of horrible fish and chips here but thankfully I am close to a very good one. It has to be a treat though.

AuntieMarys · 23/01/2025 14:17

2 fish, 1 chips and mushy peas. £21 in Yorkshire. But they are lovely

Emma6cat · 23/01/2025 14:17

Does depend, I would pay it for decent fish and chips. We have dire ones locally so drive 45 minutes to a different town for ours cos we know they will be fresh and delicious. We get them triple bagged and they know us now and always give us an extra sausage or fish cake cos they know we drive miles.

sometimesmovingforwards · 23/01/2025 14:17

Yeah, it’s an occasional treat and our one is delicious.
£15/head still makes it the best value takeaway in my area.

Starlight1984 · 23/01/2025 14:19

SallyWD · 23/01/2025 13:42

Our chippy is £7.50 for a generous portion of fish and chips. It's really delicious and worth the money.

Jesus where do you live?!

It's £8 at our chippy just for a cod or haddock! Chips are between £2 or £4 depending on size.

And no we're not in London. Nor in the south!
