To think they should refund

I messaged a local rescue page about a cat I was interested in. They told me she was 3 years old and was a surrender. They said I can reserve her for £30 and do a meet and greet. They’ve said that this is because they have people arranging to meet cats and then not go ahead. Met her at the weekend and it went well and I was all set to adopt her and pick her up at the weekend. I went out and bought all the things needed for her. Now they’ve just messaged and said they have requested vet records for and she’s in fact 8 years old. I’ll probably be flamed for this but I now don’t want to go ahead as I am looking for a younger cat personally due to our home life which can be sometimes busy and I have a 5 year old DD. I asked if my reserve fee can be returned and now they’re ignoring me I think. Should they refund me?

Do they mean a 12 year old and an 18 month old? 🤔

GRex · 22/01/2025 20:04

Insurance rates go up at 9/10yo, so it wouldn't make any tangible difference. If you liked the cat, would you like it it to be put to sleep or would you like to give it a home? That's the realistic outcome.

BTW, if you can't afford a charitable £30, can you actually afford a cat?

That's how I understood it!

FerretChops · 22/01/2025 20:07

Oh op - if you liked her then honestly, don't let her being 8 put you off. It's really no age for a cat, honest.

I don’t think so because she followed up with ‘0-3 years is a big change from 12 months’

tillytoodles1 · 22/01/2025 20:21

My cat was two when I adopted her, she had her jabs and was spayed. A few months later I took her to the vet because she was having trouble with her teeth and she had them all out.
The vet said she was about ten and that rescues often had no idea of their real age. Twelve years later I've still got her, she's a little darling.

We rescued two cats who were aged 0-3 years 🙄

Adopted them, took them to the vet. They were 12 and 18 months old.

This is going to totally derail OP’s thread, but it’s funny.

OP, we adopted one of our cats at 8 and she’s going strong 6.5 years later, she’s also chilled out and very grateful for a warm bed and regular cuddles. Don’t let it put you off on its own.

SabreIsMyFave · 22/01/2025 20:36

Of course you have a right to refuse. That is a BIG age difference. 3 year old compared to 8! Shock FFS! Tell them you are not going ahead with the adoption because you were mislead about the cat's age. They should refund you yes!

OP wanted 3 year old cat. She has signed up for a 3 year old. NOT an 8 year old. They have conned her and mislead her to try to get an older cat adopted, because they know that many people don't want older cats. Some people do want older cats, and so this particular cat can go to someone who wants a cat that age. How cunning and sneaky to hoodwink the OP. Bad practice. If they refused to refund me I would be looking at where I could report them.

LoremIpsumCici · 22/01/2025 20:41

She wasn’t misled about the cats age! Rescues give an estimate of age until they get vet records, if they can find them. This is the reality of adopting a rescue pet.

“Misled” and as a pp put it “mis-sold” implies intent to deceive by outright lying.

UndermyShoeJoe · 22/01/2025 20:41

I do wonder how do you truly age a cat. I can get under 8weeks because the eye colour but once you’ve got what appears to be a fully grown cat they are cat sized. Although one of mine gets called a kitten because it’s small but I’ve had her four years, I guess a rescue would say she was under a year if she ended up in one for rehoming. All mine are chipped.

Of course she was mislead, stop chatting such nonsense. They said the cat was 3 years old and it was 8 years old. That is a huge difference! Whether they knew this or not, the OP has the right to demand her money back as she was mislead.

LoremIpsumCici · 22/01/2025 20:44

Good luck with that!

Ohhhh, please still take the cat Sad

I realise this isn't the point of your post and yes, they should refund!

Yes they should refund

But bit sad
I wouldn't say she's reached her twilight years at that age.
It sounds like you really wanted her

TheBoysAndTheBallet · 22/01/2025 20:50

Of course they shouldn't refund you. They are (presumably) a charity who let you meet the cat and have done all of the admin for the adoption until you changed your mind. If I had met and liked a cat enough to want to adopt it, I wouldn't care what age it was.

They absolutely should refund the OP. Anyone who thinks that 3 years old is pretty much the same as 8 years old (for a cat) is utterly deluded. 🙄

ThinWomansBrain · 22/01/2025 20:52

with the OP's attitude to cats, cats are probably better off with her not having one.

ClairDeLaLune · 22/01/2025 20:52

Please still adopt her! I feel sad for her and want to adopt her myself, but DH won’t let me because we’ve already got 4! One of our previous cats lived to 17 so she could have plenty more years yet. Girl cats live longer then boy cats on average.

Ok. I did say they should refund.

They obviously didn't do 'all of the admin' very well DID they, if they got the age so disastrously wrong. They told the OP the cat is 3 years old, and it's 8 years old.

I hope you, and several others on this thread don't work in finance or with figures in any way, shape, or form, in your job! 😂

I know, I was agreeing with you sorry! I was aiming the 🙄at the posters who don't think the OP should get a refund! (Sorry!) 😬

Poppyseeds79 · 22/01/2025 20:55

If you like the cat, I would take the cat. I have a 2 1 1/2yr old cat (she's definitely is - she was born in my house), and she's mental! It's basically like having a crazy teenager. Also have a 5yr old cat whose very chilled but happy to play when engaged.
