Single person households - how much do you spend on food?

I’m reevaluating my budget and would appreciate your help.

If you live alone and budget only for yourself, roughly how much do you spend on the following each month?

  • Supermarket shopping (food, laundry detergent, pet food etc)
  • Petrol / transport
  • treats ( clothes, takeaways etc)

I don’t need to know what you earn, but would be especially interested in answers from roughly average earners.

Thanks!

Petrol £250 ( I'm a delivery driver though so high)

PloopDeck · 20/01/2025 18:42

Food and household stuff (including cat food) about £150 p/m
Petrol about £40 (wfh most days)

notanothernamechange24 · 20/01/2025 18:43

Food shop (includes meat for dogs) £60 per week
Petrol £40 per week (I'm a self employed carer doing home calls)
Treats £0

FastFood · 20/01/2025 18:43

Food:
£160

Dog food (inc treats):
£40

Transports
£100 in TFL and at least £100 in Uber 💀

Treats
🥲 A lot. I'm not really into take-aways but its going to be a glass of wine in the pub, a jumper for my dog, a lot of coffee shops, and I mean a LOT, the odd posh hand cream, some lipstick, nail salon treatment etc...

I buy loads of M&S and sainsburys ready meals.
Add veg to them a lot.
I don't drive.. l use ubers.
So I'd say per month ( every four weeks).
Food/ supermarket including toiletries / cat food etc.
£400.
Ubers to town/ appointments
£240
Clothes / days out/ miselenous £200

food - too much! It really varies, some weeks I spend £40 if it’s literally just a food shop and no toiletries or cleaning products etc and I’m going to use stuff from the freezer and other weeks it’s a lot more. I spent about £150 between 2 shops at weekend as I did a stock up on things like beer and toilet rolls and needed some toiletries, batteries and a tub of vitamins which are all £££
petrol - negligible unless I’m going away because I don’t use the car for work. A tank of petrol can last me weeks if not months. Bus is £2 to work but I wfh 2 days a week and walk as much as possible. So maybe £10 a week.
don’t eat takeaways but I probably have brunch or lunch out or coffee / bacon roll or cake type cafe meal once every weekend
clothes I buy as needed so most months £0, in the last 6’months i think I’ve only bought a pair of jeans and a dress totalling about £55 and I only bought the dress because I needed it for a party. My running trainers average about £30 a month though!

Food and petrol i budget for £200 each a month. Doesn't necessarily mean that's what I will spend but I'd rather budget for more than I need. I dont have a budget for treats, what's left at the end of the month goes into a savings account and i would use this if needed

Dynamo101 · 20/01/2025 18:55

Thanks all, keep ‘em coming, this is really helping me!

Food - between £40-£60 per week
Petrol - £60 per month approx
Treats - £20 a week
I rarely have takeaway so I'm not counting that.
Haircut every three months -£50

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 20/01/2025 19:28

Supermarket type shopping: between £120 and £180 a month depending on what I'm buying/what my budget is
Transport: £100 month (no car, I walk or take the bus and occasionally the train)
Treats: Anything from £10 to £75

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 20/01/2025 20:01

Food around £50 a week so £200 a month.

Fuel £60 a month (small car!)

Treats not sure really maybe £20 a month.

Clothes and other bits depends on what I need.

I probably spend up to £60 a month on meals out or meeting friends for coffee.
