Have you ever gotten every job you applied for?

The job application process can be so unpredictable. A friend told me recently that she’s gotten every single job she’s applied for, which honestly blew my mind. Then I think about others who face endless rejections, no matter how qualified or prepared they are.

Have you ever gotten every job you applied for? Or has rejection been a bigger part of your journey? Do you think success comes down to luck, timing, skill - or something else entirely? I’d love to hear about your experiences and what you think makes the difference!

I’m a solicitor so I had to apply for a training contract as part of the qualification process. These are highly competitive, and I wasn’t accepted for all of the places I applied for (I applied to 18 firms, was offered 12 interviews / further assessments and offered 8 of them).

Since then I have been offered every job I applied for. My current role and my previous role I was headhunted for and didn’t really have to interview, I just had informal discussions with the relevant partner. My role is quite specialised though, which I think makes a difference - there aren’t hundreds of people applying for my job.

Yup. Sounds completely ridiculous

Grammatically, have you gotten is better than have you got. Just like have you forgotten is better than have you forgot.

So no, it doesn't sound ridiculous, and it's perfectly correct English.

I have been interviewed for every job I have applied for - pubic/charity sector and am good at writing the application to meet person specs so get interviews. I got all but one job that I applied for up until I was about size 20 and a mum and suddenly 'other candidates just beat me, even though I was really good'

I managed to apply internally with people who know me and progress my career that way and have been with the same employer for 22 years but not in the same role.

Greyish2025 · 20/01/2025 19:27

Read the your application/ CV over and over, it is imperative that there is something in the contents that will make you stand out from the crowd and catch the eye of the reviewer/ potential employer that will make them want to know more and invite you for an interview.
Also read your CV as if you were the eyes of the potential employer to see if you are impressed by it, if you aren’t you need to improve on it in areas.
No one wants to read bog standard boring applications / CVs, as there are too many of them around

Cheepcheepcheep · 20/01/2025 19:30

I’ve got every job I’ve ever interviewed for except New Look when I was 16 😂

That said I’ve done a tonne of applications and not got an interview, so I just think I’m a great bullshitter…

namechangeGOT · 20/01/2025 19:30

Yes I have. I'm 41 and I've applied for 5 jobs since I left school and got all 5!

Bogofftosomewherehot · 20/01/2025 19:33

In my 50's. Turned down for one only and they said I was over qualified.

CheekyHobson · 20/01/2025 19:35

I’ve only ever applied for a couple of jobs (waitressing/retail) back when I was a student and I got both of those.

Since I graduated I’ve been headhunted for or pitched (which I suppose is a form of applying, but by inventing a job that doesn’t exist yet) every job I’ve had.

Overtheatlantic · 20/01/2025 19:38

Have I gotten every job? No, but I’ve gotten a majority. I’ve gotten fewer in middle age though.

Iamoldandwearpurple · 20/01/2025 19:38

Not every one, but from ones where inhave been called to interview offers definitely outweigh the rejections.

I haven't always accepted the offers, mainly over pay offers being significantly lower than the advertised salary range.

AgentProvocateur · 20/01/2025 19:42

No, but I’ve got every job I’ve had an interview for - all 10 of them!

NameChanges123 · 20/01/2025 19:43

I've been offered the last four jobs I applied for (although three of them were hiring more than one candidate).

I'm not great at interviews but come across as really enthusiastic...

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 20/01/2025 19:44

I haven’t got one that went to an internal candidate, one that had a really hard maths test that totally threw me for the interview (and they never did tell me if I passed the maths test which I’m the most salty about!) and one that I was rejected for twice and got on the third attempt (I really wanted that job!).

I’m pretty good at interviews though for some reason.

2boyzNosleep · 20/01/2025 19:53

Nope..

Since I qualified as a nurse and I've got every job I applied for. Obviously the profession has massive shortages, but I've gotten jobs over others with more experience.

At 15-26 years, I really struggled. I applied for so many jobs, rarely offered an interview. If I did get an interview I wasn't offered the job. I really wanted to work.

CommunistOrca · 20/01/2025 19:57

No. I've only managed to land 5 jobs in my life, including my current role - which I am never going to leave because I'll never get another one as I am incredibly bad at interviews. I get so nervous I literally can't remember my name (have accidentally said my maiden name on one occasion). I can't deal with going through all that again!

frogpigdonkey · 20/01/2025 20:02

Turned down for one graduate role and got another (better) one. Then headhunted for another role, applied for one job in between and didn't get it. Applied for a job and got down to the last two, also lost out to an internal candidate, but one of the panel called me the next day and put me up for my current job. My industry is quite word of mouth and definitely who you know and who will champion you.

Iknjtjumpers · 20/01/2025 20:19

I had many interviews over the years but always pipped to the post by someone else. I used to be regularly selected for the interview stage but that was when I fluffed it. I’m settled into a comfy role now with really good money and great colleagues. I’m glad to have failed to get those jobs because I wouldn’t have what I have now.

PriOn1 · 20/01/2025 20:27

When I was young, I went through a long period when I got every job I applied for, but there was a degree to which I think that was because there were few applicants for the jobs I went for and I was reasonably personable and happened to be good at the type of interviewing then, which was frequently very much just a chat to see if you got on.

Now I’m much older, with a slightly problematic CV, I have had to get used to the opposite and have, on at least two occasions, been turned down for a job where there were no other candidates and were desperate to hire someone. It’s horrible for knocking any confidence out of you.

Oblomov25 · 20/01/2025 20:31

Mostly I do. I apply for jobs I know I can do.

chollysawcutt · 20/01/2025 20:32

AI Detector QuillBot tells me the OP is 100 percent likely to be AI-generated. So yeah, maybe don't use ChatGPT for your applications.

fourelementary · 20/01/2025 20:36

I have been successful at every interview I have had - but haven’t had that many! I am told that it is clear from the way I talk that I am intelligent, but I’m not sure why/how. I am a fast thinker which maybe gives a good impression of intelligence, but as my slower thinking husband would say it doesn’t always lead to the right answer. He is more methodical and I am more reactive.

I am a good communicator one to one so maybe that’s why I interview well. But within a team I am often critiqued as not being a “good team player”.

Im looking for a new job currently though so hopefully I’ve still got that X factor, whatever it might be!!!

MissAmbrosia · 20/01/2025 20:42

Hmm mostly. I have had 7 FT jobs in 35 years of working, and the last 3 of those cover 30 years. (it's no wonder I feel tired 🤔) In that time there were 3 jobs I interviewed for that I didn't get. I am not particularly good at interviews to be fair - I think most of it was down to right time, right place - a bit of luck. Though obviously I had the experience for the roles.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 20/01/2025 20:46

No, but I think I’ve got a pretty decent success rate now I’m older and more established

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 20/01/2025 20:47

Yes it's true for me, but I've only worked for 2 companies. So 1st company, I had 4 interviews for various promotions and got each one, then I changed career and I've had 5 promotion interviews and got each one.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 20/01/2025 20:48

Yes, but I've only had 2 'career' jobs. Lots of bar type jobs (also got these at first interview),
