Have you ever gotten every job you applied for?

The job application process can be so unpredictable. A friend told me recently that she’s gotten every single job she’s applied for, which honestly blew my mind. Then I think about others who face endless rejections, no matter how qualified or prepared they are.

Have you ever gotten every job you applied for? Or has rejection been a bigger part of your journey? Do you think success comes down to luck, timing, skill - or something else entirely? I’d love to hear about your experiences and what you think makes the difference!

I've got all the ones I wanted to get

luckylavender · 20/01/2025 18:30

The title makes no sense

InJadeHedgehog · 20/01/2025 18:31

Yes.
I’ve got every job I’ve ever applied for.
I’ve had 5 jobs since I qualified in 2004.
I’m a teacher though and recently you really can pick and choose.

Itsjustnotthevibe · 20/01/2025 18:32

I've only been rejected once and I could see why, I did not give a good interview.

mynameiscalypso · 20/01/2025 18:32

I've had rejections but generally for ones that I wasn't sure about which probably came across in the interview/in my prep. I've got the jobs that I've actually wanted.

BlackBean2023 · 20/01/2025 18:33

No, not all the jobs I've applied for.

I have got all the jobs I've interviewed for though - for perspective it's three jobs in 12 years!

Acc0untant · 20/01/2025 18:33

I've been offered every job I've interviewed for but definitely not got every job I've ever applied for.

kiana2015 · 20/01/2025 18:34

I think it depends on the job and demand for the job, I work as a carer and have got every job I applied for but that's because everywhere are desperate

BearBuggy · 20/01/2025 18:36

Up to a few years ago I had. I rarely applied and when I did it was jobs within my comfort level. I realised a few years ago I wasn’t progressing as I was scared to put myself out there. Since I’ve had quite a few no responses but also got a promotion.

mossylog · 20/01/2025 18:37

Almost everything, but mostly just because I only applied for things I was a shoe-in for with my various career niches. I've been accepted for every serious role that I've been interviewed for, though in most cases I probably didn't face stiff competition.

typicaltuesdaynight · 20/01/2025 18:37

Yes every single interview I've been offered a job, I've obviously not accepted them all . My dh says it's my super power 😂

Anand25 · 20/01/2025 18:38

ForRealCat · 20/01/2025 16:57

For me that's just proof people aren't aiming high enough.

^ agree 😂. I have a ‘perfect’ CV (oxbridge & high profile companies) and 25 years experience in a niche field

Get interviewed for almost every role (say 80%), but it’s competitive out there

Recently came top on a process of 156 candidates…company is looking to see if they can find someone who is even better 🙄

Apparently a proportion of roles advertised/interviews for are never filled (20-30%). I think this is true based on my experience

Dynamo101 · 20/01/2025 18:40

Nope. I’ve only ever had 2 jobs, and had 4 interviews in total. So my success rate is 50%.

Dutchhouse14 · 20/01/2025 18:41

My best odds were when returning to work after DC 5 applications, 5 interviews, 3 job offers, was very pleased as my confidence was low.

My most recent job change was two applications, two interviews, one job offer.

An ex colleague said she had no issue getting jobs until she hit 55, then people just weren't interested and it was impossible to get past interview stage.

On the other hand I have a friend in her 30s who is truly exceptionally attractive, to date if she's interviewed by men she admits she's pretty much guaranteed the job-to date 100% success rate with interviews by men.

Berga · 20/01/2025 18:42

Yes I got every job I applied for until I was 40. I don't actually think it was to do with age, more with the job market being so different. I even once got a job I hadn't even applied for.

Postchristmasblah · 20/01/2025 18:46

Yes. But only up to a certain career point. About five years ago I was in the position of having been offered every job applied for (except I think once when there was a preferred internal candidate). Since progressing into more senior roles it is much much harder. Roles are scarce and often it’s about a particular profile that you either have or don’t have. It’s not enough to be well qualified and excellent at what you do at this stage of career.

Allthegoodhorses · 20/01/2025 18:48

Someonelookedatmypostinghistorysoichanged · 20/01/2025 17:00

stop with “gotten” fgs.

Yup. Sounds completely ridiculous

Picklewicklepickle · 20/01/2025 18:48

About 80% I’d say but I don’t move roles that frequently and haven’t ever applied for anything that’s a total reach.

I’ve got every job I’ve interviewed for except one because I didn’t drive at the time. NOWHERE IN THE JOB DESCRIPTION DID IT STATE THE REQUIREMENT FOR DRIVING OR A LICENSE! This still annoys me as it’s a waste of everyone’s time but they went bust a few years later so fuck ‘em.

WhereIsMyLight · 20/01/2025 18:51

I’d say the majority of jobs I’ve applied for (including Saturday jobs and graduate schemes) I’ve never even heard back from the company. There have been many, many interviews I’ve done that I haven’t got, including ones where I absolutely thought I had it in the bag. Some of this was early in my career when I just needed a job, the jobs weren’t really in my field and not what I was hoping to do but I just needed to apply for everything. I also did some contract roles so again was applying for everything as my contract was ending.

I also had a period in my previous job where I was looking quite intensively and wasn’t having much luck. I did get interviews for most of the roles I applied for (probably only or two applications that didn’t result in an interview in that time) but out of 14 interviews, I only got 1 of those. I then turned that down. That was a period which really hit my confidence. I was looking because I was unhappy in that job and I think that was really coming across in interviews. I took a break from job hunting, focussed on what I did like about my job and really clarified what I wanted. I got the next job I applied for.

Georgyporky · 20/01/2025 18:52

I've been offered every job I've been interviewed for - getting interviews is a different matter !

Correct language is important in my profession - my C.V. would have been thrown away if I used "gotten".

winter8090 · 20/01/2025 18:53

Largely yes

However the ones I haven't got are the ones that just weren't right for me, Whether that was down to my strengths, skillset or what I enjoyed doing.

If it's for you it won't go by you.

Embroideryemma · 20/01/2025 18:55

i have got pretty much every job I’ve applied for. It’s entirely down to charisma and confidence. Go in with no expectations of getting the job, put zero pressure on yourself, and it’s much easier.

Wakeywake · 20/01/2025 18:57

I got every job I interviewed for, but I had a few (3 I think) applications where I wasn't even shortlisted. I don't generally apply for more than 2 positions at a time though, I'm quite selective.

Midlifecareerchange · 20/01/2025 18:58

Surely it all depends how ambitious or realistic your job applications are? If you always apply for stuff you've already basically been recommended or headhunted for then you'll probably get it. If you always apply for jobs you have heaps of relevant experience doing then you'll be likely to get those too?

Caravaggiouch · 20/01/2025 19:00

Not every job, but I’ve got most of them. That’s a facet of me not having changed jobs that much though, and a few times my job has kind of organically grown into another role so I’ve changed without having to interview or apply. For people who’ve moved about a bit more and been a bit more ambitious than me I’d say it was unusual to get every job applied for.
