To be annoyed at the lack of bathrooms

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 13:39

I have my period. I can feel that i need to change my tampon.

I'm out walking round my city. There are no public bathrooms anywhere near me.

I see a sign for a bathroom in a small shopping centre near me. I walk in. The bathroom is actually in a shop. I'm told that the bathroom is only available for paying customers.

So now I have to get in a long queue and wait further and buy something while I really need to change my tampon.

Surely there should be better toilet services available.

Even if you didn't need the toilet while changing your tampon, you still need a functioning sink and soap to wash your hands.....

But I agree with the woeful lack of toilets generally

MsPug · 20/01/2025 14:12

Right this is weird! How many times do you want to say the word? And yes you do use the loo when you change a tampon!

Say what word? Is it the word tampon that you don't like hearing?

What are you on about

I just went into the toilet. I changed my tampon.

I did not use the actual toilet in any way shape or form.

I agree proper public toilets are needed. It's a nightmare when on a very heavy period I have to change hourly at least, ones at train stations would be great if they were always open, ours are often locked meaning having to try and change on the train - hope that they are open otherwise it's off at the next stop to try that station. God commuting sucks

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 14:14

Starlight1984 · 20/01/2025 14:13

Oh FFS @Applecharm25 . Is this your first period or something?!

50% of the population manages to survive this completely impossible situation you've found yourself in. Not sure why you're making such a big deal of it.

As I've said before, if you're in a city (which you claim to be) there will be plenty of places to use the toilet.

You don't get a privilege because you need to change your tampon. You need the toilet, you find one, if you have to pay / buy a drink / make a donation, so be it.

🙄

You're proving my point there!

As are some of the women on this thread who can't seem to bear me even writing the word tampon!

The reduction of public loos harms women far more than it harms men. Men can and do wee anywhere. Well not quite but it's not massively unusual to see a man with his back turned by a road side. They also don't have periods.

Yes ! I tried to go into one at a train station too. It was closed.

I tried to go into one in the library. It was closed for cleaning aswell

Anyone else questioning how they change a tampon now?!

I always go to the toilet in M&S when I'm out about and about. I reckon half my M&S purchases have been things I've spotted as I walk past on my way to or from the loo.

FallOfTheHouseOfUtterlyButterly · 20/01/2025 14:16

Still trying to work out what a tampon changing room would look like 🤣

Wipe clean chair where you can whip it out, changing it then wipe up any blood?

Hopefully would include a sink!

Seriously though, locally they want to get rid of one of the local conveniences and people are outraged (me too, its one of the nicer ones!). But there are others around like pubs, cafes, M&S, public toilets

Most of the "food places" have toilets you can access without purchase and somewhere like McD's you could order on your phone and go to the loo whilst the make it.

I also wouldn't call it "ripping off" the pub to just use their lop tbh

But you're not using the loo, when you change a tampon....

Aren't you? I've never not also been for a wee at the same time. Why wouldn't you? And why would anyone want to room that had all the other requirements of a toilet without having a toilet?

HoppingPavlova · 20/01/2025 14:18

I’ve got a vision of huts everywhere, each with a sign ‘Tampon Changing Room’. Weird as. Not functional either as you’ll have to fight the addicts for them and they will be in such a state you won’t want to use them. So, yeah, nah.

kaos2 · 20/01/2025 14:19

It's a toilet , bathrooms have baths in ! 🤷‍♀️

So you just... stood in the cubicle and didn't use loo roll or anything? Surely that's awkwardly tight...

I don't believe that

I just changed my tampon there. And I needn't need to wee at all

As we know, our womb and our bladder are two different things.

Edited

It's not that we can't bear to see the word TAMPON. It's because the rest of us go about our normal lives and know that once a month we're going to be inconvenienced but we just get on with it without fanfare.

You are acting like it's a massive deal to have a period and nobody, apart from you, can possibly understand how important it is to find a TAMPON CHANGING ROOM.

If you can't find a toilet, wait until you get home.

If you have to pay to go to the toilet, just pay (it's usually like 50p).

If you have to buy a coffee / hamburger before using a toilet facility, buy one.

FallOfTheHouseOfUtterlyButterly · 20/01/2025 14:20

And what about those who use towels?
Will they be allowed to use them or will they be tampon only?

gamerchick · 20/01/2025 14:21

Applecharm25 · 20/01/2025 13:54

I just think they should have more services for women on their period too.

Seeing as I'm not actually going to use the toilet. They should have tampon changing rooms for women.

At least one in a town.

Of course that won't happen as periods don't happen to men!

Who's this 'they' though? Public toilets cost money to keep open. Councils are skint.

Toilets in businesses have to pay to keep them open and usable, they have to pay separately to get sanny bins emptied of your used tampon. Why should they be free?

You're welcome to fund a facility yourself if it's important to you.

TAMPON CHANGING ONLY!!!

Preferably in flashing neon lights. So everyone else in the venue knows you're on your period 😃

Ghruch · 20/01/2025 13:57

I opened your post assuming you meant bathrooms (ie rooms with a bath or shower). The people who say ‘bathroom’ to mean toilet in this country probably spend too much time on American social media.

It seems to be due to US puritanism to refer to a room without a bath in it as a bathroom, rather than a toilet.

Sure. But you might as well take the opportunity to have a wee! Bizarre not to to me. Especially when you're concerned about the lack of provision of toilets (I refuse to use the word bathroom unless taking about an actual bathroom, it's so twee).

You're walking around, cross you can't find somewhere to change your tampon but when you do find an available toilet you don't also use it to have a wee? Even though you know you might not be able to find a loo when you need one? Makes no sense.

Maybe full body scanners on the door which won't open unless they detect a tampon?

twistingleaves · 20/01/2025 14:23

if you're going in a pub just ask - I've never been turned down!

Especially when the OP has already struggled so much to find a toilet in a city centre!!!

thepariscrimefiles · 20/01/2025 14:26

Does your city not have an M&S? They always have customer toilets.

nam3c4ang3 · 20/01/2025 14:26

changing tampons room?!?!?! Stop. Where earth are you that there are no shops, no pubs, no fast food?! Are you in the wilderness?
